No, I know. I was posting this in support of your argument. Uptown is pretty much the only place I see single gear bikes and people wearing flannel (among those not living in outstate Minnesota where it's actually rather comfortable.)

I know this. Though, while you've got the single-gear bike part right, you probably should have mentioned that the bike also needs non-functional oversized fenders and perhaps saddlebags and/or a basket on it. As for the flannel, two sizes too small is essential. On top of that, lobe plugs, heavy-framed box glasses, a satchel* and dark blue jeans (also two sizes too small) are also pretty clutch. As it relates to the jeans, two options are acceptable: 1. both cuffs rolled up so as to display the fashionable white socks and three inches of matching pasty white calves, or 2. only the right one rolled up so as to imply one is worried about getting bike chain grease on the pants, despite the fact that aforementioned single-gear bike has a chain guard on it. 89.3 The Current sticker on chain guard is an optional, but preferred, feature.
* On Madison's East Side, look for the "Hipsters for Barrett" button on the satchel. Button also acceptable on undersized flannel.

Well, hey...the guy claims to have a firm grasp of Uptown but has absolutely no idea what the self-proclaimed hipster looks like. That's a borderline impossibility unless we're dealing with the absolute least-observant and most out-of-touch person in the galaxy. Isn't that a bit extreme? how does supporting civil unions for any couple above the age of consent translate into denying people civil rights?

I read something stupid in Politico today which surprised me because they're columnists are usually pretty thorough. Some idiot was claiming that winning the South is critical for Obama's chances, because if he loses North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida he's virtually certain to lose the election?!? Is the author an idiot or what? If Obama wins Ohio the election is over. If he wins NH, NV and CO the election is over. If he wins any one of the three states in question the election is over. Polls can and will fluctuate between now and election day but this was a fundamental misreading of the road to 270.

I don't know how Pew handles LV, but this far out from the election almost all pollsters are sticking with RV because there is no good way to predict LV -- it's false precision.

Obama could lose the entire south and still win. Romney has to sweep the south to win. So the author is either ignorant of the difference between necessary and sufficient conditions, or he has an agenda to direct Democratic resources to southern states.

2) Why does the first amendment not protect the religious freedom (marriage being a religious institution and all) of gay people?
You seem to be suggesting that civil union and marriage are substantively the same thing. Obviously, they're not. I wouldn't agree with the author, but in fairness, if Romney takes NC, VA, and FL, that could be a sign of overall strength that translates to some level of success in other battleground states. But Obama certainly doesn't have to have those three states to win.

Tell that to the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of heterosexual couples, including me, who went to the courthouse. that's a civil union. we've had heterosexual civil unions for centuries.

civil unions provide spousal survivor's benefits, state and federal inheritance benefits, etc. etc. from a legal point of view, a civil union is marriage.

You cannot force churches, mosques, synagogs, or temples, to conduct a sacramental ceremony to unite same-sex couples in the US because that would be state interference in religion. That's not a "civil" rights issue it is a religious issue and the state has no business being involved in it.
Think of it this way: for society, civil union = legal marriage; however, civil union may or may not = sacramental marriage, depending upon the religion involved.
