Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

The people who went to the restaurant Wednesday solely to stick it to the gayz. They were just as moronic as the kiss-in people.

Anyway, on that issue they've lost -- their own children mostly don't care anymore, and nobody else under the age of 40 does. That cycle of hatred had it's run, but it's done.

That's a complete mischaracterization of why people went there on Wednesday. They went there to protest the idea that government can control your business because of your beliefs. Sure, some were there to stick it to the gays, but most definitely not all of them.

You are way too quick to draw offense, and you misread. I said the people who went solely to promote their anti-gay ideas are morons, not that everybody did it for that reason. The people who went for First Amendment ideas I applaud.

Nobody will ever know what the breakdown is; I assume given the type of people who watch Fox and Fiends there were a ton of both.

I'm not offended so much as confused.

Reasoning behind, let's go back to my original point. What's the point of the kiss in? If it's such a decided issue, there was no purpose.

I think there was a definite purpose (whether most of the attendees were in tune or not who knows).

When a candidate takes a political position...they do so on purpose with the ramifications of getting or losing votes. People reward or punish politicians thusly. The purpose of business is entirely different...to create value add products and services typically for profit. They have customers that are based on the quality and value of their products. When a business makes a move that is considered wrong or unethical or frankly makes a bad product...consumers vote with their dollar.

This is the case here. A prominent representative of the company chose to take a seemingly unrelated political stance which positioned his company in a certain light. As a result, this group has decided that its inappropriate behavior and is wanting to both boycott purchases and encourage others to do so. Importantly, it also sends a message to representatives of other companies who are contemplating taking similar stances. Without punishment, companies may take public political positions based on the whims of its leaders but should be aware of the detrement they pose to the organization as a whole.

Frankly I'm not too excited about a precident of corporate entities dabbling in politics (which was initiated here by a company representative). But this public reaction is a great intersection of free speech and capitalism (and is extremely important for the health of both).

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

So, how did the kiss in accomplish these goals? Alienate the customers? Annoy the workers? Congrats. This did nothing to further their cause. Nothing.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

As I said, actual protest was healthy as capitalism and freedom in speech in action. The approach itself was likely by design (although I can't know why...it may have to do with attendance). From a company standpoint, its either a strategic mistake by an exec who can't keep his mouth shut or a public attempt to try to win over those who are not supportive of gay rights. In either case, it is impossible to know whether it was a great move or a great blunder on either side (as implications are widereaching/long term)...but folks and the company's that employ them need to be prepared to take responsibility for individual actions. That is all.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

seriously? You're going to take this out a bunch of pimply-faced high schoolers who are just trying to make enough money to put gas in their car? lulz. Give me a break.

I think the girl who had to deal with the gigantic d*uche who verbally attacked her, pretty much says everything we need to know about the people who work there.

Why do you care so much? If you're so gung-ho about holding up a company's beliefs, then why are you so annoyed at what the gays do in terms of a harmless response? It's obviously not going to change the opinion of Chick-Fil'A's upper management.

Better question, why do you care that I care?

I see the purpose ("we're here, we're queer, get used to it") but I disagree with it as ineffective. The gays have stored up a virtually infinite supply of the benefit of the doubt putting up with hatred that has ranged all the way from contempt to discrimination to intimidation to murder so I'm not going to get on their case, but I don't see the protest as in any way positive. All is does is give the right's Sniveling Tantrum of Perpetual Victimization one more news cycle. There's no way to win with those people, so just let them go. Suck all the air out of their publicity circus and let them asphyxiate on their own Fox fumes. Treat them like Fred Phelps. Within a decade all those Huckabees, Santorums and Palins basking in the cameras now will be hooted off as George Wallace shouting "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever."

They're destroying themselves. Stand back and let them.

Fair enough. Doesn't change the fact that you obviously have your boxers in a knot over something that doesn't matter to you (or does it?). If the gays were going on a Chick-Fil-A employee shooting spree, you and I would have a reason to be concerned about their actions. All their doing is necking, which is not a crime as far as I know. Now then, cue Pio and his "gay bully" accusations, as if official religious bullying of gays isn't equivalent. Oh shoot, I've invoked the "tu quoque" defense, whoops.

Hey, I'm all for that. But I don't get how the kiss in accomplishes that. At this point, it's probably not worth trying to explain it to me. The both of us are pretty much repeating ourselves and I'd rather not act like the people we're both criticizing.

I will finish with this:

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

One of our fellow posters ran him out of here apparently never to return.

well that's a shame. Priceless, we all love you man. Rover can't hold that party line on his own you know.

I for one, as a (recently) staunch conservative, would never begrudge anyone their disability checks (if that's what the tiff was about). Most of us have had family or friends or at least heard about someone who's been in that boat and are glad of our safety net even while we publicly complain about its attendant taxes. In my mind, from what I know of your story, you exemplify exactly why we need to fund social security.

hey where's my good buddy Priceless? I hope he's on vacation and not something serious with his illness. I kind of miss his full-throttle daily enthusiasm on these subjects.

Huh...is this true? Hope not, but the last post I could find #817 from him on 7/25 and accompanying posts:

I'll send my bill to your office, grasshopper.

Or maybe it's because nobody's trying to do shit like government-sanctioned medical rape to men. Just a theory.

Yeah, old white conservative males really are being terrorized in this country. Why won't someone weep for them losing their historical privileges?!? Why, oh why?!?

Instead of unloading that surplus boilerplate here, why not call the Salvation Army? They'll come pick it up AND do some good with it.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

The Kiss In was as stupid as the people who went to Chick Fil-A to protest gay marriage. Both sides are using what one man said to try and find a reason to **** on the other and nothing more. Zero was accomplished, and to be honest I dont think either side really even wanted to accomplish anything besides having cameras in their face for a few minutes. This little kerfuffle has nothing to do with the real issue because no one is going to be convinced either way based on the actions of people who eat (or dont eat) at a fast food restaurant.

That said, I bet it was fun to watch a bunch of people get all hot and bothered because of it. :D

Now if you will excuse me, I am off to Wendy's because I agree with their policy on capital punishment :p

Nate Silver has got Obama's lead increasing. His estimates have Obama at 72%, which is a high water mark for the president. He's got Obama winning over 300 EV.

Some may be skeptical of his forecasts...but as wiki puts it:

Silver's final 2008 presidential election forecast accurately predicted the winner of 49 of the 50 states as well as the District of Columbia (missing only the prediction for Indiana). As his model predicted, the races in Missouri and North Carolina were particularly close. He also correctly predicted the winners of every U.S. Senate race.
