Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Sadly, I doubt JFK would be considered a Democrat today either:
> big tax cut to spur the economy
> encouraged volunteer activity, not compulsory
> strongly anti-Communist

I'm not sure why you'd be sad about that, but keep in mind that Kennedy cut the top marginal rate to...70%. I'm not so sure he'd be seen as a republican today...but he certainly wasn't a hyper-liberal, and certainly was not as liberal as Teddy Kennedy.

Maybe, but I'd bet he would be a Democrat now regardless. Agree though that both parties are vastly different.

Stay classy 'Nucks...

How is this any different than Democrats complaining about the Republicans and the Wall Street lobby? Or the religious right?

If he had said the fa***t lobby, I'd have a problem with it.

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Another wow moment. The Republicans are up in Indiana 2 with 82% reporting (47-49), a seat that was expected to easily go to the Dems. They also picked up a seat in Kentucky 6. A seat that was expected to go to the Dems in a relatively close race.

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Now Illinois 10 (expected to go Dem) has the Republican up by 4 percent with 77% reporting...

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Warren wins! At least one of Massachusetts' atrocities is corrected. Have fun cleaning out your office Brownie!

Down from 90 -- a 22% cut in the rates. When JFK died, Teddy would probably be considered a 2012 Republican. He put his finger to the wind, saw which way it was blowing and moved accordingly to secure his lifetime seat.

The nominal rate was 70%, but the effective rate was still near what we pay today. The reason for this? Tax deductions. Back then, you could take deductions for rug purchases, pet parakeet feather trimmings appointments, and whatever else there might be. When Reagan cut the top marginal rate to 25% he had removed the deductions, creating only a small effective rate cut. Basically, he made the tax code simpler and we've been mucking with it ever since in the name of special interest lobbies, keeping it roughly the same while increasing the nominal top marginal rate to 36%.

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Wow. MSNBC is almost unanimously criticizing Warren for attempting to give a victory speech before Brown's concession speech. Very bizarre sight.

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Looks like MD going to approve gay marriage, gambling, gerrymander, and DREAM act. How is Minnesota doing on the constitutional amendment on marriage?

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Too early to call. Looks like it was about 5% in for both and both were leaning "no".

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Interesting in Michigan, Debbie Stabenow(D), who was vulnerable, won re election to the Senate. She was chair of the Senate Ag committee and got a lot of votes from farmers who normally vote Republican.

The minute the Republicans put up Hoekstra, she was a lock. The Michigan Republican Party just does not understand that it will take a lot more than little-known West Michigan congressmen to unseat her.

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Richard Mourdock and Todd Akin both lost. That probably means that to be a Senator you have to know the definition of rape.

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Looks like a long night in the NY 21 district. The D incumbent Bill Owens leads R Matt Doheny by 3,000 votes. 95% in. Estimated 24,000 absentee ballots. NY 24 is also close.

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Waiting on MT, ND and NV Senate while watching idiots on TV.

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Right now, although it's a little too early for specific numbers, it's looking like the Senate is trending toward 55-44 D (+2 for the Democrats) while the House will be about 240-195 R (again +2 for the Democrats).
