Election Day 2025

I told my wife, last year at this time when she was staring blankly at the wall making frightening noises, that if we waited long enough the pendulum swing would come back. Nothing in politics is forever except change.

I'm not saying we're all the way back, from 2024 not to mention 1980. But to move that far requires us moving through these intermediary points. I go to sleep happier tonight that any time since the Great American Wet Fart of November 2024.
Mamdani's speech was the dose of fiery hope I needed.

My SO has been raving about it...gonna watch in a minute :)
I'll save it for the morning. Right now I am already through the roof.

Yes, I know, the Dems will try SO HARD to fuck it up. But I hope every Dem under 50 puts their finger to their lips and calmly says to their elders, "Hush, now. Hush now baby. Let's get you to bed."

I do not want anybody within a decade of my age involved in Democratic politics. I trust the utes. I don't trust us -- I am familiar with our work.

The Baileys are already on the phone to Chuck Schumer to tell him to end the shutdown.

Cherry on top, to end the night: Democrat Michael Cashman won the special election for New York Assembly District 115 with a 30-point Democratic swing.

I was trading political stories with a friend on reddit and reminisced thusly. FWIW, I'd like to share it here with my Cafe friends. You have to imagine a towheaded, earnest, 15-year old boy who wants to grow up to be Hildy Johnson. Every word of this story is 100% true without exaggeration.

OK so I have a Long Island local politics story.

When I was 15, in 1978, I was a cub reporter for my HS paper, doing one of my first stories on the local Dem convention. I took the photographer who was older and had a car out to Commack Arena and started walking around this vast hall, talking to folks.

It was like a slice of the 1930s. A live band blasting “Happy Days are Here Again,” every ten minutes, then some Benny Goodman. The local big wigs all sat around at tables clustered tightly on the floor. At every table there were a couple fat old white guys, their younger Smithers-like apparatchiks, unending booze, and anywhere from 1 to 4 working girls who to me looked absolutely angelic but who in retrospect had likely been ridden hard and put away wet all night. There was not a woman over the age of 25 in the entire building, and very few men, myself excepted, under 50.

And because I am quick with a joke and have deep attention seeking OCD I made friends and these old corrupt fucks adopted me as a sort of mascot of naivete for the night. I circulated the tables and heard a million dirty stories and watched these old farts grope young women and drink without abatement.

Nobody said a word about politics all night. It was a drinking party. At the end somebody got nominated. They all piled into their cars and took the girls back to their second floor sex dens. I drove home with the photographer and we wrote up a great story about how local politics is about getting drunk and getting laid. Our faculty advisor spiked it.

And that’s what I know about Long Island politics. I assume it was no different anywhere else. Probably still isn’t.

Spanberger and the new House of Delegates Dems have already scheduled a meeting to plan gerrymandering the VA House seats. With the Dem supermajority it will pass by voice vote.

Man did the GOP monumentally ef up. They never thought we would respond in kind. The Republicans have been taking it as read for decades that they can do anything they want and we will just mumble. No more of that. You bring a knife we bring a gun.

VA Members currently 6-5. Evidently if we really wanted to apply the screws we could move that to 10-1.

The California Proposition winning by such a huge margin might well be the most important and significant result of the night. It was a loud and clear message by the people to Democrats in blue states of “fuck this bullshit, take off the gloves and fight!” It’s a massive green light to go ahead and fight dirty.

I loved how 18% of the people who said Prop 50 is bad for democracy voted for it because they said, "You know what is worse, though? Nazis."

It's either election-to-election or house-to-house with these morons. This is better.

Playing with fire if you go that far. Although with southwestern VA being what it is, you could probably make that 1 GOP district end up R+80….

Edit: Lee and Scott counties “only” went R+72 and +70, respectively, so I was a little off, but not that much!

My big takeaway here is that Dems are as motivated as they can be. They turned out BIG last night. Great News!

But the one thing that sticks to me here (and is gonna be a bit of a wet blanket here) is that the Joe Six-Pack GOP contingent probably didn't know that there was even an election last night. To them, there is only one election, and the next one is in 2028. Those people definitely left something on the table for the GOP yesterday.

But overall, this shows that D's are somehow falling towards success. People like me who felt ignored last time will now be heard. This shows that Primaries will be a huge thing leading up to next November. VERY positive result. here!
