ECAC Officiating First Half

Re: ECAC Officiating First Half

The problem is a systemic lack (NCAA - USA Hockey) of recruitment and training of young refs.

Who the hell wants to be a ref these days? Even working kids games is brutal between helicopter parents and coaches who think they're god's gift to mankind. In fact, the entry level jobs are probably even worse than college or pro gigs because at least by that point you're being well-paid to get yelled at (D1 hoops refs can get upwards of $2000/game on Saturdays).

I reffed intramurals in college for my work study job, absolutely nothing on the line, no pressure, and players were still idiots and ***-hole. I now occasionally run the shot clock for a local university's men's and women's hoops games, and the number of idiots in the stands who cuss out the zebras without knowing the rules themselves is astounding.

Re: ECAC Officiating First Half

This goes for penalty refs and for the line judges. There's a few lines judges out that that have to be blind I swear.
And let's not even get started on when refs get themselves mixed up with the players during a play

Did you really say "Line Judges"? How long have you been watching hockey?

Re: ECAC Officiating First Half

If you the fan had to pick 6 refs and 8 lines to keep from this staff of guys who would it be. These guys are also the same that you would want to see working the playoffs and finals as well.

I really think that there are some good guys and would like to think if everyone else thinks the same. If we are all in accordance than maybe we can be vocal to the league.

Re: ECAC Officiating First Half

6 Refs that don't offend: Andy Petrus, Pete Torgerson, Scott Whittemore, Peter Feola, Tim Kotyra, John Murphy

8 linesman that I wouldn't mind seeing: Joe Testa, Leo Boylan, Glen Cooke, Rich Patry, Tim Cronin, David Butova, Dave Brown, Brian Cale.

Oh darn no room for Chip effing McDonald.

Re: ECAC Officiating First Half

I have noticed an increase in boarding penalties this season on what look to be clean hits that happen to be near or involving the boards by large defensemen. The line on boarding seems to seems to be changing and not to the advantage of any team with recruiting large physical defensemen. Another observation is that last year, there seemed to be an inordinate number of simultaneous "hooking/diving" penalties that begs the question that either a player was hooked, or he took a dive, but how could both happen at the same time? I would seem to be an either/or proposition, but not both. Fortunately, I haven't noticed any of those calls so far this season.

It makes more sense to me when its called embellishment. I take this to believe there was a hook or a trip or a hold of some sort and the player turned up the dramatics in an attempt to draw the call. This is when I think both get called simultaneously. Player A commits the foul and Player B goes the extra mile to make sure the officials saw it.

That being said, I agree with you that when a player blatantly dives after no offense has been committed, then only the "diver" should be sent to the box. A lot of gray area with this one.

Re: ECAC Officiating First Half

Speaking of Cornell, I have been watching Scrivens kick his net off for 3.5 years when under pressure in his end, and it happens at a minimum of 2-3times per game, and I have never witnessed a penalty.

Is it the school ?, The Coach, The Goalie. Is it human nature that allows inconsistencies amongst Sports Teams, Players, Etc.

That's funny. I used to call that Petizianing the net, but he doesn't seem to do it this year.

Re: ECAC Officiating First Half

I think the major area that still needs to be improved is the consistent calling of major penalties for dangerous plays. Got6 is 100% right in his earlier post that there were at least 2, if not 3, dangerous hits from behind in the Clarkson-SLU game that were called minor boarding penalties. On two of those plays, the players made big hits from behind (one to or near the head) and clearly made no effort to let up. In the non-conference games Clarkson has played, it seems the officials have been making a clear effort to call the major penalty when needed and the minor penalty when the offending player makes an effort to avoid the dangerous play.

As far as the rest is concerned, it's really tough for me to tell from the outside. One thing I've noticed is that the "senior" referee seems to impose his will on the junior referee in a lot of games. This leads to inconsistency from call-to-call and period by period.

Interference and obstruction are some of the most confusing plays to me as someone who has never played hockey, but watches a lot. We all know when the blatant interference occurs but there is often a very fine line between good defense and a penalty. The problem is that line seems to change from play to play and game to game. I like Stewart's idea that the infraction should be considered in the context of the game, i.e. did it create or inhibit a scoring change. Unfortunately, that leads to a lot of interpretation, something I'm not certain the ECACH refs can handle at the speed of the game. The call that allowed Clarkson to tie the game at Appleton last Friday was phantom at best.

Re: ECAC Officiating First Half

I couldn't find a Clarkson thread so i thought I would post my question here...whats going on with Mark Borowiecki? Is he healthy? He hasn't gotten a point in 8 straight games after getting 13 in his first 16 games? Thanks

Look up Golden Knights Roundtable, thats the Land of the Knights posters. Some still cross post here, but they keep their discussions over there.

Re: ECAC Officiating First Half

It is getting close to the end here. One more month and the season will move to the post season.

In the ECAC WHO do you want to see on your games?

Big games ---

A couple come to mind
1. Union vs Yale
2. Quinnipiac vs Cornell
3. Cornell vs Yale
4. Union vs St Lawrence
5. Union vs Quinnpiac
5. Qunnipiac vs Yale

What guys would you want to see?
What guys don't you want to see?

I think there is talent there, I have seen a lot of guys this year at Princeton and Union and RPI. I think there are a few that can do a great job..

At princeton I have seen a lot of
1.Richie - Good ref, not a great skater. Gets it done
2.Ernst - Does a nice job, Great Skater - moves like a player on the ice
3.Dumas - is ok, calls what needs to be called, ok skater
4.Hicks- he is a middle guy, still on the fence about him - not a good skater, seems lost sometimes.

At Union and RPI
Dell - everyone hates him but he seems like he knows what he is doing. some nights he is out to lunch
Obrian - good young offical. Skates well and calls a good game
whal - another guy with potential - skates well
J. Murphy - What can I say, we all know what we know about him.

I have seen others but not enough to comment on them.

I would like to see a couple young guys paired up
Obrian with Ernst or wahl - I think these guys would do well together.

Linesman - Don't really watch them to much, no real problems with any!
