East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

You have a good goaltender? you might be the only team in the region to have that :D

Is your PP inflated because of early games during the year?

It probably is a bit inflated due to some out of conference games (we went 6 for 9 against Army) but it's still an excellent unit.

They were still tops in the ECAC (22-for-90 for about 24%), ahead of Harvard & Yale - both had about 22% each. They're very good at setting up the play for a one-timer in the slot (Daniel Carr & Wayne Simpson benefitted a lot from that), plus Jeremy Welsh has a howitzer from the point. All around, they have guys that can handle the puck very well, which allow them to have a lot of offensive zone time. Not to mention, there have been numerous times where they score right off the faceoff and use less than 10 seconds of PP time.

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

The Yale - Air Force game on November 14 was as strange a game as I have ever seen (I watched the stream). Perhaps the die was cast in the second period when Yale, up 2-0, couldn't extend their lead on a 54 second 5 on 3 opportunity. Perhaps 5 periods of high speed, high altitude play in two days early in the season began to take its toll. Perhaps Yale was over-confident. Perhaps the hockey gods intervened.

In any event, Yale had outshot Air Force 25-14 through two periods and scored their third goal a few seconds into the third period to take what seemed to be a commanding lead. Then the wheels came off. First AF scored on a power play slapshot that second-string sophomore goalie Jeff Malcolm (getting his second start of the season in an away, non-conference game) whiffed on. Then, a few minutes later Malcolm gave up a terrible shorty from below the goal line off his own skate. All of a sudden the score is 3-2 and you know Malcolm had to be thinking to himself by this time. Yale then gave up the tying goal even-strength to a freshman in a scrum around the net. In hindsight if you are Allain you get Malcolm out of there, but that's hindsight. AF then goes on another power play and a sophomore D pots the game winner - what proves to be his last goal of the season! Four unanswered goals including two power play goals and a shorty. Yale goes on the attack and has a few chances, but its too late and they lose 4-3. Yale G Malcolm hasn't seen a minute of play since.

I'm not making excuses. AF mounted a terrific comeback and deserved the win. But it was a very strange game and by no means a decisive whuppin. I'm guessing Yale will be out to even the record.

Here's a press report of the game:

USAFA, Colo. -Air Force scored four unanswered goals in the third period for a 4-3 win over third-ranked Yale in a non-conference college hockey game Sunday, Nov. 14, in front of a sellout crowd at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.

Air Force, 3-6 overall, handed Yale its first loss of the season after five straight wins. Yale came into the game as the nation's top scoring team at just under six goals per game. The win ties as the highest ranked team Air Force has ever beaten (Colorado College and Michigan in 2009).

Trailing 3-0 early in the third period, Air Force finally got on the board with a power-play goal by Scott Mathis. John Kruse made a cross-ice pass to Mathis at the right point who fired a slap shot past Jeff Malcolm for his third of the season. The crowd went wild about four minutes later when Paul Weisgarber scored a short-handed goal at 9:51. Weisgarber won a faceoff in the Air Force end, skated the puck out of the zone and through the neutral zone. After he passed the puck off the boards, he sped around Yale defenseman Kevin Peel to regain the puck at the goal line. He sent a shot from below the goal line that hit the skate of the goaltender and went in to make the score 3-2. The Falcons tied the game with an even-strength goal by freshman Jason Fabian at 12:50. Brad Sellers made a long outlet pass to Fabian who sent the puck in to Tony Thomas. John Kruse's shot was saved, but Fabian scored during a scramble in front of the net. The game-winner came at 16:08 on the power play. Fabian skated the puck around the net as Stephen Carew drifted in from the right point. Carew one-timed the short pass from Fabian that went under the left pad of Malcolm for a 4-3 lead with 3:49 remaining. With 1:30 left in the game, Bulldog Chris Cahill fired a wrister off the post and the Falcons held on to the 4-3 lead. Yale pulled its goaltender with 42 seconds left and Jason Torf made a save on a shot by Broc Little, who came into the game tied as the nation's leading scorer. With 33 seconds left Weisgarber was trying to clear the zone when he was taken into the boards by Little, who was called for boarding. With Air Force on the power play, Malcolm went back off the ice for the Bulldogs, but Air Force won two faceoffs in the final 20 seconds to preserve the win.

Yale opened the scoring at the 5:17 mark of the first period with a goal by defenseman Jimmy Martin. Jeff Anderson won a faceoff in the offensive end and sent the puck back to Martin who fired a slap shot under the cross bar. The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead at 18:48 on the power play on a well-designed play. Andrew Miller made a cross-ice pass to Chris Cahill in the left circle. Cahill quickly found Brian O'Neill on the backdoor for his sixth of the season.

Neither team scored in the second period, but both had a golden opportunity. Air Force had 52 seconds of a 5-on-3 but was unable to score, getting just one shot on goal. Then it was Yale's turn for a two-man advantage as the Bulldogs had 54 seconds of 5-on-3 time. The Bulldogs had four shots on goal, but Torf made all the saves. Freshman Jason Torf earned his first career win as he made a career high 34 saves. Malcolm made 25 saves for the Bulldogs. AFA was 2-for-10 on the power play while Yale was 1-for-4. Yale outshot Air Force, 37-29. "This is one for the ages," head coach Frank Serratore said. "The people who saw this one saw something special. We are a bunch of nobodies who are struggling right now and we came from being down 3-0 in the third to knock off Goliath. You don't beat the third-ranked team in the nation without someone special in the net and Torf made some great saves for us tonight. It was all about momentum for us. They went up 3-0 and then we finally got the goal by Mathis and our bench came alive. We had some chances in the game, but we just couldn't get a bounce before that goal. The crowd was really into it and they stuck with us tonight."

Air Force returns to conference action as the Falcons hit the road for Buffalo, N.Y., next weekend. The Falcons play at Canisius, Friday, Nov. 19, at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. Then on Saturday, the Falcons play at Niagara in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The faceoff is at 7:05 p.m. EST for both games.

What is Yale's, Union's, and AFA's out of conference records? UMD is 5-0-1 out of conference sweeping Clarkson and providence

A quick look at the team's schedules shows the following:

Yale - 4-1-0 OOC (excluding NC matchups with ECAC teams and exhibition games). The loss was to Air Force. Wins include a 5-1 drubbing of CC, 5-1 over Sacred Heart, 3-0 over Vermont, and 10-3 over Holy Cross.

Union - 8-4-1 OOC. Wins over Sacred Heart (x2), Alaska-Anchorage, Niagara, RIT, American International, Army, & Minnesota. Losses to Alaska, Western Michigan (x2) and Bemidji State. Tie against Connecticut.

AFA - 2-4 OOC. Wins over Yale and Clarkson. Losses to Alaska, Alaska-Anchorage, Colorado College and Denver.

Who was that 5th win from?

Are we 4-0-1 in out of conference?

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

Anybody ready to make their predictions for this regional yet? I'm taking Yale over AFA, UMD over Union, and then Yale over UMD. (That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see a rested Union team come out and win the regional.)

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

Biddco, Tie Vs Lake Superior ST

Wins-Northern Michigan, Providence(x2)Clarkson(x2)

We beat Northern Michigan and tied Lake superior in our first 2 games

Knew I was forgetting something. We also lost to UND in tAA arena opener, so that makes us 5-1-1 in non conference play.

I wouldn't be surprised with anything with this regional. I hope that UMD pulls out two great performances so I can see them play in St. Paul.

Got my ticket, hotel room booked, and the day off from work. +1 for shirking job responsibilities to catch Union play in their first D1 NCAA tourney! UHM, any idea what the student contingent will be like with everyone gone on spring break? Crappy timing there...

I graduated this past June, so I can't keep track of student turnout quite like I used to be able to. Tough call on the students showing up. Their classes start up on Monday so hopefully people will be back home and in the NYC/Boston area before heading back to Union on Sunday. I'd like to say that 300-400 students will show up but I'm afraid that's just not realistic. I'd guess 50-100. :( Hopefully I'm wrong.

I'm going straight from work to take the 1:07 train from Grand Central to Bridgeport. It's an 80 minute train ride...just a little bit closer than St. Louis.

Air Force lost to both Alaskas there early, lost to CC and beat Yale at home, and beat Clarkson but lost to DU at Magness. 2-4, with the two wins coming against the ECAC, and three losses to the WCHA. 1-0 on neutral ice, though.

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

Air Force is one of the hottest teams in the NCAA right now. They used a good closing run at the end of the year to take 2nd place in the AHA and parleyed that hot streak into an AHA championship. While I think they got a little "puck luck" in the semi-finals and finals in pucks hitting posts and/or open nets missed by both Holy Cross and RIT, Air Force is certainly an excellant team and will represent the AHA well IMO.

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

komey1 - I'd rather be lucky than good any day of the week :)

2 Things on the Yale/AF game.

Yes, AF's win was weird against Yale in C Springs - Yale's second night at altitude, thought the game was in the bag, blah, blah, blah. AF is a never say die kind of team though, so Yale has to play a complete game.

I believe Yale will be primed and pumped for this game, and they are the obvious favorite in this game. These two teams have played twice in the past two seasons. Yale won 3-1 back in Dec 09 and AF came out ahead the last contest. You have to give Yale the nod based on their strength this year. Regardless, I give AF the X factor. Looking forward to an entertaining game.

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

I have not seen Air Force play this year, and only know what has been posted in this thread about them. I have only seen Yale play a few times this year, and only on TV, not live.

What I find interesting, for what it is worth, is that since '07 Air Force is 1-3 in the NCAA tournament, with the three losses all being one goal games and two overtime losses. I only saw the games from '09, but based on the box scores it seems like the only game they got out played was the game they won against Michigan. Even though Michigan definitely carried the play in that game, Air Force did a great job of holding onto the lead and collapsing defensively to clear pucks away from their net. I do not know how much the current Air Force team resembles the teams from '07-'09 (obviously missing Volkening), but it stands to reason that at least some of the players are the same this year from those teams. Therefore, if history is any indication, I definitely expect to see a good game between Air Force and Yale, since Air Force has been able to compete with some pretty tough competition in past NCAA tournaments.

I will leave it for you guys to decide whether this year's Air Force team is better than past teams, and whether Yale is on par with Minnesota '07, Miami '08, Michigan '09 and Vermont '09, since I do not have enough information to make an assessment.
