Dump Term 2, 1.01: Sleep Now in the Fire

As for the “transgender” mice, it’s possible that the Trump regime’s sweeping efforts to root out language associated with diversity, equity, and inclusion led them to health studies that involve “transgenic” mice, lab research mice that have been genetically altered to better model human disease response. They have been called a “revolutionary research resource” for medical advancements.

In removing certain words from federal agency documents, the administration has repeatedly deleted documents unrelated to its culture war concerns, including a database that helps doctors determine whether to test pregnant women for HIV and sections of the IRS employee handbook that refer to “inequity” and “inclusion” as financial terms. A clumsy or automated search for any mention of “trans” material in medical records might easily have flagged “transgenic” studies.

Yet the White House doubled down on Trump’s line on Wednesday, sharing a government webpage that declared, in a slightly more nuanced phrasing: “Yes, Biden spent millions on transgender animal experiments.” As is typical of DOGE, the page tallies up spending in a completely misleading way in order to arrive at an arbitrary number. One line item, for more than $3 million, was research examining how “sex-specific inflammatory mechanisms controlled by hormones” may contribute to asthma, and whether estrogens account for a higher prevalence of the chronic lung disease in women. A different hormone study, priced at $1.2 million, indeed used “transgenic” — not transgender — mice. About $2.5 million went to a fertility study. Another project looked at how gender hormones affect the gut microbiome of mice. Of the highlighted research that does address transgender health, there’s a $300,000 analysis of breast cancer risk for female-to-male trans individuals taking testosterone. Again, the mice used for clinical purposes did not undergo gender transition.

A single entry, pegged at $455,000, was for HIV researchers looking at the immune response of mice who had been given cross-hormone therapy, which is perhaps the closest the list gets to an example of “making mice transgender.” Clearly, however, that was not the ultimate objective of their work.

Yeah screw research for people with asthma.

That's the thing. Everyone wants someone else to do everything for them, they don't want to put in an ounce of effort on their own part to research anything, or learn anything. They want someone else to tell them. That's what Donnie does, even though everything he tells them is bullshit.

I see it in my cycling forums all the time. Someone buys a bike, and then comes asking if they did good. Well, first, the time to ask is before you buy the damn thing, not after. And then there's stuff about parts, or maintenance and stuff. Example, the other day, a guy posted looking for what size thru axle would fit his bike. I did a quick two minute Google search and posted him a link, said, "here you go, but why are you asking here when you could have searched Google yourself and found your answer just like I did in less than two minutes". And he got all pissed at me Sarcasm "thanks for being all helpful and kind. Amazing how hard it is for some people to be nice."

I mean, other people were giving him guesses, maybe this one fits, check this place, and I gave him the exact size he needed. So I wrote back, "Sorry that you couldn't do this for yourself" and he goes " "Hahaha sorry, did I trigger you? Sorry your ego is so fragile. Happy to dish out insults but can't take any criticism. Very mature."

All cause he wanted other people to do something for him rather than spend any time and effort on his own. He spent more time bitching back at me than he would have finding out the correct part he needed if he'd just done a search. And he's not the only one, I see it dozens of times a day. Guys who never had a bike before and then buying something on a whim that doesn't fit them, or doesn't suit their need. Buying parts that won't fit their bike cause they don't know, and won't research ahead of time.

I hate to sound like an old fogie, but it's this younger generation. Had mommy and daddy do everything for them that they're absolutely helpless when it comes to having to do stuff for themselves. And their Google-fu is so hit or miss. They could probably search up the specs and utility of the latest graphics card for their game machine in a heartbeat, way easier than I could, but to find basic general life information and they're just helpless.
There was someone on Fark who posted a video about someone commenting on this phenomenon. Society is losing its ability to do its own search for information as "the algorithm" on social media has taken hold. Unfortunately I can't find it anymore, but it's definitely a thing,

Doesn't help that search engines themselves are suffering from enshitification as poor AI commentary and sponsored search results make up the bulk of the leading entries these days.

It’s not that they’re dumbasses, it’s that they’re dumbasses who think they’re the smartest.

It’s a tough thing to admit for many of you Gen Xers but y’all are the Trump Generation.
Dunning-Kruger in full effect. As I recently saw it summarized, there is a minimum capability required just to know that you're minimally capable. If you don't hit that, you think you're brilliant.

“I am closer to LeBron than you are to me” is a lesson that should be required in school.

Originally back in grad school ('07) I was going to write my thesis on how that was going to happen/already started. There wasn't enough research then to get it done. Now I see articles about it every few months and see it with my students and friends. Short term retention is dying and ability to even do basic Google searches and find a decent source is going away.

We basically wired our brains now for instant gratification and shut out the portion that questions our own judgement. We are basically rats going after the cheese in a trap but not out of instinct, but because we can't even see the danger since we won't look for it.

Politico (yeah, yeah, I'm aware) reports that Trump and Co. have been working backchannels to try and get rid of Zelenskyy.

Oh I totally buy that! Trump was made to look stupid in front of the world and Putin needs Zelenskyy gone. As long as Zelenskyy is in power Ukraine has a figure that inspires. They need a puppet or a Neville Chamberlain so they can "end the war".

Jesus I love Moskowitz...what is wrong with these people.
