Drugs Thread I: "Cocaine is God's way of telling you are making too much money.”

So on our trip we stopped in with one of Dr. Mrs.' old friends, the sister of one of her dearest friends who just died last year. She died because she was overdosing and her stupid criminal husband was so effed up on heroin he was afraid to call the hospital because he might get in trouble with the cops. SO he delayed a few hours, and those hours were enough.

But I digress. When we visited this woman seemed vivacious and very together, but very thin. We all talked about the last few years and how her sister had been falling deeper down the drug abuse elevator shaft and how she could not convince her family to help, etc. Anyway, Dr. Mrs had asked me to not mention her thinness (like I would?) because she is sensitive about it, but she brought it up and talked about physician hopping and finally getting diagnosed as having, and I swear I'm not making this up, a gluten allergy. And so on.

We left and I cocked an eyebrow at Dr. Mrs. and she said, "yeah, I assume she was doctor shopping for an affluenza diagnosis," and let it go at that. Later that night we met another old friend of hers at an improv joint in Phoenix and afterwards this and that came up and we mentioned this as funny. And the other friend said, "oh, yeah, she's just hooked on oxy."

And that's the first time I have felt naive in about 25 years, because it absolutely never occurred to me, but in retrospect and given some other stuff the wife filled me in on later, yeah, that is actually rounding plausible and steaming towards likely.

You realize they have passed laws recently,at least in Maine, so drs can't throw oxys at every issue as so many folks are now addicted. Its caused herion to make a huge comeback as folks cant get there oxys anymore. Also, you've never heard of celiac disease?

The ones I feel sorry for are the parents of those poor lost souls throwing their lives away. But enough about the improv joint in Phoenix...

For 1 person with celiac disease 249 Whole Foods shoppers say/think they do. It's this year's "look at me" illness. Used to be Asbergers, before that ADHD, I forget before that. It will be something else in five years.

Oxy's called "hillbilly heroin," and it's everywhere. That wasn't my point.

Nicely done.

My buddy who is studying PT at the U of M said they learned in class that only 1% of people who get prescribed opiates get addicted. I found that really surprising and not sure what studies they cited or anything. In some regards it makes sense, most of the people who get prescribed opiates get them for a low day supply to treat short term pain. That said 1% seemed really low given how often we hear about it.

I am in the middle of getting some dental work done. They prescribed me some Perc after the last round of work. I told them I want no part of that, it makes me act all twitchy/spastic. Like giving crack to a 2 year old. They INSISTED (all but forced me) that I take the prescription, but I don't have to fill it. Insurance reasons. If I don't take the prescription papers, I could theoretically sue and say I was never offered medication.

So, I took the paper prescription, proceeded to tear it up beyond recognition (not in anger, just to make sure no one else could use it) in front of them, and tossed the paperwork in the trash. This is part of the problem, IMO. Doctors HAVE to offer the prescriptions.....

You'd think for record keeping sake they could just note "had discussion on all options for pain management with patient and an informed decision was agreed upon." instead of feeling the need to prescribe something.

I'm with you on the twitchy stuff. I can't imagine the kind of pain I"d have to be in to take anything stronger than generic Aleve. I aggravated a back injury playing hockey 4 or 5 years ago and was given muscle relaxers. I took it once and knew I was loopy beyond belief and never took another one.

I tried the "make a note of the conversation" approach. Nope. They have to have a record of giving the prescription, according to them (and this is a dentist I trust, and I hate visiting dentists/doctors; not quite a phobia, but...). I'm also not a pill person. Don't even have ibuprofen at my place. I pretty much have to be on my deathbed to take anything but antibiotics.

I don't know much about whole food shoppers as there isn't one within a hundred miles and if Maine is any indication hillybilly heroin is actually heroin now

Based upon my one personal experience, I believe Oxy is one of those drugs that should simply never leave the hospital. I had back surgery about 6 years ago. They gave me a prescription for Oxy. Went and got it filled and it was this giant bottle! The first night home I took one tablet, as prescribed. Two things occurred. First, every ounce of pain disappeared. But the crazy delirium like state that I fell into was surreal. I never took another.

I always joke with my wife that we should have saved that bottle as part of our retirement portfolio. I wonder what the "street value" was. :p

I have the exact opposite reaction to oxycodone (Percocet): I had it because of a dental prescription a long time ago and it was the Greatest Feeling On Earth. I can completely understand drug addiction and I am very careful with opiates, because they make me feel insanely good.

I'm disappointed, Kep. Especially after the Campaign thread title, I would fully expect "Drugs are bad, mm'kay?" :p

I've heard this is happening. People get hooked on oxy, lose the prescription, and then move up (or sideways) to the real stuff. IINM that is what happened to Dr. Mrs.' friend. We live near WV and the local news basically revolves around (1) white guys self-IDing by wearing wife beaters, (2) buildings blowing up for no reason because of course there's a reason, and (3) people getting arrested for Heroin's Rich Pageant (theft, child neglect, generally skeeze).

So there you go: booze, meth, opiates. The Trifecta. You're just not supposed to mention the first one in the same breath because, again, money.

60 Minutes did a piece on this very subject last season including a discussion on needing to get away from criminalizing addictive behavior instead of treating it. iirc it was the same piece in which they interviewed Michael Botticelli. His pov's are not without flaws but it was very interesting.

There's a lot of money in the prison industrial complex. Unless those sweethearts find another gravy train, we'll keep on incarcerating users.

There was a recent ruling that struck a huge blow to that whole system (federally, not at the state level though).

And yeah I agree, Portugal seems to have a better system to deal with drug crimes.
