Drugs Thread I: "Cocaine is God's way of telling you are making too much money.”

Can pot be used as a painkiller? I honestly don't know.

yes, it has been shown to be useful in this type of application.

Typically marijuana is seen as a way to treat chronic rather than acute pain, but research has shown it could be helpful for both. Specifically, THC seems to not so much kill pain but rather distract from it. Since THC and opioids affect different areas of the brain, some of the most promising research is in the area of using low-levels of opioids in conjunction with THC - minimizing the negative effects of opioids while boosting the overall pain relief.

Only if you mix oxys with the Doritos . Form my younger days at least you might get a good nights sleep. Of course the Feds say no known benefit but folks say otherwise. I doubt any drug company wants research done on it.

The thing I wonder about that is even if Big Pharm and the USG have the lid down on any research that would spoil the sweet opiate monopoly on pain killers, there are always other countries and independent medical journals. (This is my objection to "alien tech is being suppressed" conspiracy theories in general. There is always somebody outside the clique who can ruin it.)

There's a bee keeper raising bees who feed off cannabis and make cannahoney. No idea if it works.

I guess I'm lucky because that stuff screws me up so bad I never want it again. Case in point: A while back a tore a muscle in the back of my shoulder (actually tore is free from the shoulder blade). They gave me a pain killer, a muscle relaxant, and an anti-inflammatory. I took them and crashed for a nap. When I woke up I could not move. I laid there 30 minutes watching the clock change and could not will a muscle to move. When I finally could move (which took a lot of shear "what is wrong" panic to build up) I called my doctor and told him "< bleeeeeep > the stuff you gave me; I'll manage the pain myself". That's when he admitted that he was glad to hear that. He said if I could manage the pain on the anti-inflammatory just do that. Of course that was 800 mg tablets of ibuprofen. I'll run the risk to my liver over that other crap any day of the week.

As far as addicts and ODs, the scourge around here lately is other drugs laced with fentanyl. That's killed a couple people in the region.

Then again, I'm the harsh old guy who says if you choose to do the drugs and OD, well, here's your Darwin Award. Let's move on.

I had some elective surgeries for which I was prescribed Percocet or Vicodin. I really wasn't affected all too much but what I realized, at least for me, was they don't assist with pain, but rather put you in some sort of state that you can't feel the pain. That's not what I want. I want something to alleviate the actual pain. I just took Advil.

800mg of ibuprofen wont hurt your liver too bad unless you do it like 6 times a day for a week straight.

My interest was piqued so I had to check it out. Don't know if it works but some of the products are expensive.

Voila.

It was 3x a day for five. By then, meh, it was just a torn muscle in my shoulder at the base of my neck. The PT had built up enough other strength around it.

I thought it was acetaminophen that was hard on the liver and ibuprofen on the stomach.

Ibuprofen is hard on the stomach for some (many?) people. I know one of those is metabolized by the liver while the other is metabolized by the kidneys. I won't pretend to know which is which.

He's correct about acetaminophen.

Nsaids, kidneys, gut

NSAIDs damage the kidney mainly through reduced blood flow. It can (and often) has a concurrent effect with ACE-I (common...very good BP meds like lisinopril, captopril, etc) by acting on both the afferent and efferent blood flows from the kidney.

DEA: how do you do, fellow kids?

If there are parents that can’t understand emoji codes then those kids are on drugs for good reason.

All parents now are either millennials or really late Gen Xers who should easily understand that stuff.

It's always evolving. By age 25 everyone is hopelessly out of it. This has been true since 25 was the life expectancy.

I'll disagree...

This is like someone in their 60s/70s refusing to use a computer or smartphone nowadays... You have to willfully go out of your way to avoid learning this stuff at this point in time. It's willful, self-induced ignorance.
