Drinking Thread: Three Sheets To The Wind

If you have a taste for quality soju I recommend Hwayo 53. I enjoy it chilled neat, but I could see someone mixing it if they prefer that.

I remember that chilled soju is especially dangerous. It drinks smoother than vodka, but at 20-25% it will still knock you over pretty quickly. 🤪

Went out for dinner and drinks the other night to one of the better bars in town. Asked if they could do a Sazerac. Bartender said, technically, no but also yes. Apparently this bar doesn't keep the right kind of bitters in stock but this bartender brings his own a long with a few other types of ingredients that may be used in more classic cocktails but may not be used in much else. So he dug into his own supply to make it for me. It was pretty good. He used what many to believe the original spirit, cognac vs the rye whiskey that has become more common. I ended up having a few and he received a generous tip.

Edit: went to the local liquor store today. Got Sazerac Rye, some absinthe, and the requisite Peychauds Bitters so I can make my own at home.

The sazerac has quickly become my drink of choice at cocktail bars. You can tell a LOT about a bartender with that one drink.

Best one I’ve ever had was in eagle river, MI. Just so much finesse going on with it.

Made my first few (3) Sazeracs tonight after dinner. Pleased with how they came out.

I will look into getting some cognac so I can make both versions. I also need cognac for some recipes (steak au poivre specifically) I've been wanting to make so why not.

I thought of this thread when there was a segment on local news about a Maine bitters company called Handshake Maine. The guy came to Maine after the Iran revolution in 1979. I guess his products have a great reputation. Not sure if his supply chain reaches far but they said 19 states. https://www.handshakemaine.com/

Forgot to mention, while my wife was enjoying a solo spa afternoon, I was a total hipster dork and went to a kava bar in Asheville last month. I would say it's kinda-sorta like taking the smallest Xanax tablet, or having a single beer. Also makes your mouth numb like lidocaine or Sichuan peppercorns. Weird. Tastes like shit though - honestly, Jaeger would be preferable - so I'm gonna pass in the future.

The best sazerac I’ve had didn’t mix the absinthe. Sprayed the air with a mister and ran the glass through that.
