Drank my bottle of Worldwide Stout last night. Quite good. Also, at 18%, it's like drinking 3-4 normal beers.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Spent Christmas at my mother-in-law's which is down near the Illinois border and only 20 or so miles from a Binny's (Chicago metro based liquor chain with HUGE selection and good prices). Hopped down over the border and picked up a few new additions to the premium rum shelf that I can't get in Wisconsin:

Dictador 12 - I have the 20 and love it and this is actually supposed to be better based on ratings. Grabbed two bottles assuming that I'll love it. At only $33, it's worth the risk.

Botran 1893 Solera - Rated high and since I was there and can't get it here, grabbed a bottle. We'll see.

And the main reason for the jaunt:

7 Fathoms Cayman Rum

Here's a write up...

"Made by man and matured by nature, Seven Fathoms Rum is the first and only spirit made entirely in the Cayman Islands. Handcrafted in small batches by master distillers Nelson Dilbert and Walker Romanica in their Georgetown, Grand Cayman distillery, Seven Fathoms Rum is aged underwater at a depth of forty-two feet, or seven fathoms.

Using only locally grown, organic sugarcane, Dilbert and Romanica distill Seven Fathoms Rum in a Christian Carl copper pot still. Once distilled, Dilbert and Romanica pour the rum into used oak bourbon barrels to age. Instead of simply leaving the barrels to age on dry land though, Dilbert and Romanica cache the barrels in a secret location off the shore of Grand Cayman.

While it's no secret that shipping wine and spirits on boats has traditionally produced higher quality drinks, Dilbert and Romanica realized that they could replicate these oceanic trips by simply allowing the tides and waves to push and pull on their barrels. The gentle motion of the waves and the alternating pressure of the water during the rising and ebbing tides helps push Seven Fathoms Rum deep into the pores of the oak barrels, extracting all of the rich oak and bourbon flavors from the wood, which, in turn, creates a complex rum with extraordinary depth of character and flavor."

Wanted to try this because of the story/process and the fact that it's highly rated and has won awards. Wouldn't spend that kind of money on a novelty small batch rum without the ratings and awards.

Also have a special affinity for the Caymans as I honeymooned there.

Finally, picked up a bottle of Plantation XO 20th Anniversary as my bottle is getting low and it's cheaper down there than I can get it here.

Now have to remove a few bottles from the top shelf to make room...

That 7 Fathoms is intriguing. You'll have to let us know how it is!

Currently drinking a Central Waters Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout, WOW I forgot how good this was. Also found another place that still had BCS so I picked that up for BB_dl

A couple of us mentioned on GPL that this year's batch is missing something, but we don't know what. Last year's batch I'd put up against Goose Island BCS. This year? I wouldn't. It's still outstanding, but I wouldn't rate it along the likes of the top 10 beers I've had.

Andy's Liquor in Rochester...

Has a back room where you can sample things. Dos Maderas double aged rum. It's really nice neat. Bought a bottle.

Really cool to have a store with knowledgeable staff where you can try stuff. Had mostly whiskey back there, which is understandable.

Had two bottles of the AE rye, but no samples. $80. Just can't do it without trying it first.

So... back at the hotel after a night out of Gosling's & Coke and Crown & Coke and met up with some parents who like me, wanted one more.

Found a whiskey bar and lo and behold, they had Angel's Envy Rye.

It's really, REALLY nice. Never had a whiskey (rye) that tasted anything like this.

I'm so tempted to spend the money on it now. No way the wife will go for that though, so gotta find a way to get to Andy's without her knowing...

One day (tomorrow) to get it done.

Based on your posts here you seem to be knowledgeable about good rum. Any advice for a neophyte?

Anything that says captain Morgan on it.

Four years ago on New Year's Eve, we released the Kraken, and lo, it was good.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Kraken is pretty decent rum for cheap. It's the only rum I own as of right now.

The Angel's Envy Finished Rye is safely extracted from Minnesota and is currently in my basement. I had a sampling and it's as unique and interesting as I found it to be last night.

Got their last bottle as one had been bought earlier today.

Happy for my score! :)

Kep - it's too hard and rum is too broad for me to answer your question.

Are you looking for something to mix with cola or something to sip? Do you like sweet rum or drier rum? What's your budget? What's available in your area?

If it isn't obvious, the above suggestions were trolls. :D

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Enjoying an Expedition Stout right now, been sitting in my fridge maybe 8 months or so, I guess. Much, mellower I guess, than fresh off the shelf. Good way to put this year in the rear-view.

Drive-by.

Jameson 12 here. Chillin' with the bro and nieces.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Btw...

Andy's Liquor in Rochester, MN is a solid... SOLID store.

Great selection of the higher end stuff. Had their own custom blend of the AE Bourbon as they bought a barrel and had it blended to their specifications on sight. I didn't buy that as I already have a bottle and the whole not really caring for bourbon thing...

Still pretty cool though.
