Dramatic Changes To *This Season's* NCAA Selection Criteria?

Re: Dramatic Changes To *This Season's* NCAA Selection Criteria?

We have our first "different tournament field" based on the old & new PWR criteria.

The PWR/RPI under the old criteria would be:

1) Boston College .5102
2) Wisconsin .6975
3) Minnesota .6431
4) Quinnipiac .6274
5) Clarkson .6108
6) Northeastern .5964
7) Bemidji State .5861
8) [[CHA Champion]]

OUT #1) Princeton .5859
OUT #2) North Dakota .5661

Under the new criteria, Princeton is in and BSU is out:

1) Boston College .7283
2) Wisconsin .7079
3) Minnesota .6463
4) Quinnipiac .6315
5) Clarkson .6134
6) Northeastern .5965
7) Princeton .5882
8) [[CHA Champion]]

OUT #1: Bemidji State .5880
OUT #2: North Dakota .5735

Re: Dramatic Changes To *This Season's* NCAA Selection Criteria?

UPDATE: The correct Pairwise Rankings based on the new 2016 criteria can be found here. Note that the rankings spreadsheet on the page will take a few seconds to open (it's pulling up a pretty big file) but give it a minute and it will come up.

There are two clarifications I need in order to make sure this is perfect:

1) I need to know what the sliding scale is for the Quality Win Bonus. The men use 0.050 broken out over the top 20 teams (i.e. a win over 1st place gives a bonus of 0.050 and a win over 20th place gives a bonus of .0025), and I think the women will do the same over the top 12 teams (i.e. a win over 1st place gives a bonus of 0.050 and a win over 12th place gives a bonus of .004167). I have an email out to someone on the committee; if I find out the scale is different then I'll update the rankings accordingly but it should only have a marginal effect.

2) I need to know if now that TUC is gone, if ALL teams will be compared to each other, or if only teams with an RPI > 0.500 will be compared. Right now I'm doing it only with RPI > 0.500 but I have a separate spreadsheet saved for if ALL teams are being compared (that is, does BC win 37 comparisons or does it only win 17?).

This should not affect the rankings, but there's a chance it could, so I want to make sure my assumption is correct. Men's hockey now compares all teams, but the women's criteria still specifies that only teams with an RPI > 0.500 are eligible for at-large berths... so there's ambiguity there. Anyway, once I hear back from the person I emailed, I'll update accordingly.

The link above is the same link as is in my signature. As far as I'm aware, these links are the only place on the internet with correct KRACH and PWR for women's hockey.

*bump*

USCHO has new pairwise rankings up.

Oddly, the RPI on the pairwise page includes the QWB, but if you want to see what they calculate the QWBs to be, you have to look on their RPI page.

(A quick glance at Wisconsin's numbers, it looks like Grant and USCHO are in agreement - or will be when Grant updates with Sunday's games. Great job, Grant.)

Nice! Glad it's up.

I updated for today's games and they do match up. I'm pretty glad I got it right haha... That would have been kind of embarrassing :D

Thank you very much!!

It's like you take a test, and you're pretty sure you aced it, but.... Until you actually get the grade back, there's that bit of doubt.

Re: Dramatic Changes To *This Season's* NCAA Selection Criteria?

They also "fixed" their KRACH ratings page in that they added Merrimack's games, but they aren't counting Brown's win against Sacred Heart.

That's causing a ripple effect slightly changing everyone's rankings and making USCHO's KRACH not match up to mine. If I make Brown's win over Sacred Heart an exhibition game (like USCHO is treating it) my KRACH matches up to theirs exactly. But it's not an exhibition game (they're counting it in the PWR, for example), even if maybe it should be lol...

Should I make the change too or keep mine "correct"?

What you should do is write to USCHO and tell them you are doing a better job and they should beg you to take over the ratings page. Maybe you could convince the NC$$ they are doing it wrong

I am willing to do this but I require substantial payment from USCHO in the form of free season tickets to BC women's games.
Stand up for yourself. Stake your place in the world. Don't follow the herd.
Cheers :D

I'll leave my rankings correct. It would be nice to have validation from USCHO's rankings but at this point I think USCHO should be seeking validation from mine.

Re: Dramatic Changes To *This Season's* NCAA Selection Criteria?

I would like to also add that I think it's fantastic that Union has 0 wins and yet has a quality win bonus.

Of the six actual D1 teams with zero QWB, five are in Hockey East. Including, shockingly, BU. (The other is RIT).

Re: Dramatic Changes To *This Season's* NCAA Selection Criteria?

If Harvard wins the ECAC tourney, is there a scenario where the ECAC gets 4 teams into the tourney?

Princeton would have to climb above Northeastern. Currently, Princeton is 7th and would be knocked out if a second auto-bid winner comes from outside the PairWise top seven (CHA winner is the first).

That's not impossible though -- Princeton is just a hair behind NU at the moment.

Probably need Northeastern to get knocked out in the quarterfinals (unlikely) and Princeton to get to the championship game (possible)...

It shouldn't take that big of a change, because Princeton is already close. Northeastern losing one of its three quarterfinal games and still advancing while Princeton sweeps might make them even, given Northeastern figures to have a weaker quarterfinal opponent than the Tigers will have. Anyway, the Huskies still have to deal with BU this weekend.
