Re: Dr. Clayton Forrester's Science Roundup

This is what I read on their website:

So not placement, but at least guidance in applying for an internship, and plenty of opportunities to network. Another option is Michigan State.

I'm just considering options right now. Either way, I'd have to move to either Kalamazoo or East Lansing to begin.

Reading that language....good luck with that. This is not a personal knock on you by any means....you are not going to be placed unless you have a horseshoe up your arse. The food market is tough, because food things are all the rage these days: GMO, healthy living, trans-fats, whatever is the new topic of the day.

Another thing that gives me tremendous pause is that my message of "moderation in all things" wouldn't be heard among the Paleo/low-carb/gluten-free/etc cults.

In other words, the boat left and I wasn't on the boat.

The previously mentioned Armadillo....I wish I could print the rants he's had on the "Foodbabe" BS that is being spewed nowadays.

Medical clinics with dieticians on staff would like to hear their candidates say that, so would places like Weight Watchers and other responsible establishments. Those are the places that receive high MD reviews in the various publications.

That said, I'm not pushing one way or the other, just making sure you realistically think about your options. While it might be a tight market, it's not entirely doom and gloom for RDs out there.

I don't mean to rain on the parade, either. I just know it's a tough market. Depends on what you're exactly going for.

No offense taken. Even if I jumped right now, I'd have to go on complete financial aid, including aid for on-campus housing. Not only that, a dietitian friend is warning me that now you have to pay for your internship, among other things.

Re: Dr. Clayton Forrester's Science Roundup

To add another perspective, I had a few friends (and thus many friends of friends) who were food science majors at UW. Most readily found employment post graduation. Not all of these were high paying jobs or in their area of preference but they were at least able to get a foot in the door after graduation. Nearly all of them were part of some "food tasting team" that I am sure has a name that I have forgotten. Anyway, they would go to regional competitions and I think it was a great way to meet and greet with potential employers.

My best friend of these has an excellent job at supplement company. Her focus is safety and consistency so she does not work in marketing (thankfully). She had not drank the Kool Aid at all, agrees with most of what I have to say about it...but I still have the sinking feeling she is working for the devil (with a lowercase d). ;)

yep. The one dietitian who warned me about paying for an internship works at Perrigo, the OTC private-label drug maker. The only way she's been able to be a dietitian is to provide volunteer council for Team In Training.

Technically it's not paying for your internship, it's paying for credit for your internship. Since it's a requirement, it needs to be a credit towards graduation, and since it's credit, it's $$$. Possibly one of the biggest rackets out there right now, making you pay them for something they don't even offer.

Luckily I never had that situation, but I know friends in packaging, journalism, and teaching who went through the process. I think the worst of all is teaching. Packaging internships will definitely pay, there are still some paid journalism internships out there, but student teaching encompasses an entire year, you don't get paid, you have to come back to campus on Fridays for seminars and classes.

Re: Dr. Clayton Forrester's Science Roundup

If I could just get some family members to preemptively reference snopes before emailing me I would save a lot of time.

I've tried that, it turns out that "HA! Everyone knows Snopes can't be trusted." (while apparently every other Tom Dick and Harry can be, if what they come up with is shocking enough)

Very true.

For me, trust is earned. There are many places I look at with less skepticism, especially if it is for benign day to day correction of misinformation. Even if Snopes was riddled with errors (some exist, I am sure), most of the claims it debunks are so easily done that I find it largely irrelevant to the gentle nudging back to reality I often have to do :)
