Re: Dr. Clayton Forrester's Science Roundup

Lived in the Santa Cruz mountains up by Skyline Blvd in the 80s an area where the minimum ownership was 40 acres and weed was the crop of choice. Those folks could hear a helicopter coming 10 miles away. I can't imagine what they do now with drones and other tech available to DEA and other agencies.

A guy just can't make an honest living anymore.

Re: Dr. Clayton Forrester's Science Roundup

Not quite sure whether this issue belongs here or in the SCOTUS thread....

500 feet eh? I just might have to remember that the next time some idiot is out buzzing around our barn. I guess the local flyboys like using our barn to line themselves up for their approach at the local airport.

or butterfly nets with long handles. What the paparazzi might do with a drone-mounted camera is really creepy.

Re: Dr. Clayton Forrester's Science Roundup

My sister is all balled up by these charlatans. She's got a degree from a good school and a background in education. It's not like she's an idiot. But my lord they can play her like a fiddle; they're the contemporary equivalent of spirit mediums.

Speaking of quacks... this person exists. Looking at her Facebook posts, I'd wager she is driving the woo woo train at full speed.

And her "PhD" came from an online diploma mill that only required a 3,000 word essay. I only attained a Bachelor's at NMU, but I've turned in papers that were longer than 3,000 words.

Re: Dr. Clayton Forrester's Science Roundup

Food Quacks are worse than Hitler.
Her, William Davis ("Wheat Belly"), Dallas and Melissa Hartwig (Whole30), Robb Wolf (Paleo proponent), etc, are all interested in what they can get out of your wallet. "Try our method for weight loss, better health, and better sex for $20 a book!"

It's people like the above that make me think I missed my calling. I've been so confronted by woo and BS that I'm thinking I should go back and earn another Bachelor's in dietetics, earning a designation as a Registered Dietitian.

Armadillo (very good friend of mine) has a double degree in the food sciences. The job market in that field is very, very tough. And that's putting it lightly.

One of the programs I was looking at (Western Michigan) gets you an internship/placement right out of the gate.

Re: Dr. Clayton Forrester's Science Roundup

We also live in Minnesota. A hotbed for food degrees due to all the food-related companies in the metro.

Don't believe the hype unless they can support it with something well beyond marketing materials.

Any college or other post-secondary institution that guarantees placement is hiding some fine print somewhere. Whether in the type of position or who qualifies for the guarantee or what.

Re: Dr. Clayton Forrester's Science Roundup

I'd really really look into that and make sure that is legit. I'm not kidding.

This is what I read on their website:

As a graduate of WMU's dietetics program, you will be eligible to apply for post-graduate internship programs. You should apply for admission to internships during the last semester of your senior year or after graduation. You must complete the internship and pass the registration examination for dietitians to qualify for certification as a registered dietician.

You can network and learn more about the field before you graduate by joining relevant student and professional organizations. The Student Dietetic Association is the active student group in which dietetics majors participate, and membership in SDA is the stepping-stone for involvement in the profession. The American Dietetic Association is the accrediting body for the profession of dietetics; membership automatically guarantees membership in the state dietetic association. The Southwest Michigan District Dietetic Association provides networking opportunities for dietitians in the southwest Michigan area and regularly provides continuing education activities in the form of seminars and presentations on various nutrition topics for its members.

So not placement, but at least guidance in applying for an internship, and plenty of opportunities to network. Another option is Michigan State.

I'm just considering options right now. Either way, I'd have to move to either Kalamazoo or East Lansing to begin.
