Does Brown care about women's hockey?

Re: Does Brown care about women's hockey?

It pretty much seems that way.

Time and again I hear (and see first hand) how parents of new players react when Janey sees limited ice time, isn't on special teams, gets chewed out for screwin' up in a practice or game, is challenged by the coaching staff, etc. etc. etc.

Quite often it is a reaction to Janey and parents having to deal with on-ice adversity for the first time, and the parents not really knowing how to cope other than to stress and *****. Eventually things ameliorate and self-correct (Janey figures things out, builds confidence, sees more ice time etc.) and mom and dad relax.

I know of one high profile player in particular whose father said to me, "Coach was really hard on her her first year. I remember thinking "She is having a tough time and isn't happy and I've got to get her out of here." She decided to stick it out, and I'm glad she did, and that we let her make the decision, because she wouldn't be the player she is now had coach not relentlessly pushed and challenged her."

Sometimes, however, they don't self-correct and if Janey isn't getting the star treatment...or the program is suffering losses, the stessing and *****ing and moaning continues ad nauseam. Which seems to be the case here.

Its been no secret that the Brown program has struggled, Coach Murphy doesn't sing kumbaya around the center ice dot, and the administration and athletic department seem apathetic toward the program and athletics in general. Which begs the question, where was the due diligence in the process of choosing a school and program?

Oh, that's right, there wasn't any. Under the all too often heard "It's all about the education" mantra the blinders were put on and Janey was ostensibly herded off to the fine Ivy institution in Providence to continue her enlightenment, when in reality it was to pursue her D1 hockey career. The NESCACs came calling, but they weren't good enough for the egos along the Prep school glass and in the warming rooms. No, Janey is going to get a first rate education and did I mention, play D1 hockey.

Well, you wanted D1 hockey, and you got it. Warts, hard work, demanding coaches, accountability, and all the rest. Now sit down, shut up, and let the kids play...if they are up to it. If not, well, you will always have that Ivy education...because that is why you chose Brown after all.

Hux one of your top ten for sure!

Re: Does Brown care about women's hockey?

Agree 100%. One of our D is in year three playing college hockey. Had a great rookie campaign, followed by a though 2nd season, so the quote in red sure rings a bell. She is back in full swing now and enjoying it like never before. We supported both her and her coach at the same time getting through this "Behind the scenes".

BTW Justamom...You may not realise this but your D and my D played against each other in minor Hockey several times as we are from the same neck of the woods.

Well I figured with the ON in your name it was almost a given at one point lol

One of my D's played for the same org in the same town, the other for a competing org. Check your Rep.

Re: Does Brown care about women's hockey?

Bottom line......fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through Ivy D-1 hockey.

But then I'm criticized for pointing out that the team should be doing better? The way I see it, having gotten rid of 12 girls who were apparently drunk, fat and stupid, they should be doing a lot better than last year. Having an entire team full of sober players instead of only half should make a big difference during games, or at least that’s what I would expect.

Re: Does Brown care about women's hockey?

Janey has had a rough go at college hockey. isn't she getting close to exhausting her eligibility?

Re: Does Brown care about women's hockey?

You are so right, stating how the team is not as good with the new players, is not in any way an insult to the players that are currently on the team. Falsely stating that a freshman with a season ending injury, who has been playing injured the first half of the season, is bailing on the team, is in no way an attack on the players.....You are so right, this is all about the coaching staff and the program and nothing about the players. My mistake, I thought the players were part of the program. They are the ones out there playing the game, not you, me, or most anyone else on these boards. What is the benefit of bashing the program on the board in three different threads? Is it going to suddenly change the way Digit coaches or Brown handles their program, I doubt it. Wouldn't it be better to contact Brown directly with your concerns? If there are so many disgruntled previous players, why not get a petition together and present it to the AD. Seems to me that those steps would be better at achieving your goal to remove the coach then bitc*ing on a message board.

For those reading the thread for nostalgia, one of my favorite episodes of I Love Lucy was the meat locker with Lucy locked in the freezer

Oh, the irony of your posts having a quote on Democracy.

Re: Does Brown care about women's hockey?

When challenged, none of them admitted to doing the basic research of asking Digit (or the players themselves) about the players on her roster and why they were no longer there - something that anyone researching a prospective team should ask. They didn't help their daughters figure this out, so they have nobody to blame but themselves.

What? The players weren't discarded until AFTER the girls were recruited. Speaking of fact-checking......

That's because you are posting negative opinions about their beloved Coach Digit.

Take these 2 paragraphs in a post originally submitted by Hux:

"Its been no secret that the Brown program has struggled, Coach Murphy doesn't sing kumbaya around the center ice dot, and the administration and athletic department seem apathetic toward the program and athletics in general. Which begs the question, where was the due diligence in the process of choosing a school and program?"

There's a conflicting sentiment expressed here in that (1) the apathy of the admnistration and athletic department at Brown about their teams in general; or (2) this is hard work, demanding coaches, accountability and all the rest. These 2 cannot co-exist in Brown's profile. This, to me, sums up Hux's bias in regard to the subject matter of my posts and all the pro-coach-driven hostility that gets fired back whenever I discuss the girls on the team who were dismissed.

Thank you Hcky85 for bringing the poster [Iceisnice] to task for that outrageous remark. Imagine if you or I had said that about a [the] coach or the assistant coach? There's your double standard here.

Are we a little bitter here?

I'm sorry, let me explain how to go through the recuriting process more effectively.

First rule, don't apply ED (don't know if any of the players here did or not, but just in case) unless you are willing to play for any coach or not even play at all.

Second Rule, with Ivy League not having NCAA letters, you have all the time in the world to change your mind. Hopefully you've applied elsewhere (see NESCAC), because if you are good enough hockey and academically to make it in the Ivy League, there are no end of NESCAC schools who will get you in the door. So, keep tabs on the team throughout the Junior year. And at the end of the year, ask the coach for a final assessment of where her players stand. Now granted, the same players who were playing fine at the end of February can gain 20 lbs and flunk out during the spring term, but that can happen anywhere and isn't the coach's fault. And don't give me the lame excuse that you can't get to Providence to keep tabs on things. I probably live a heck of a lot further away from there than you do.

Third Rule, you can never ask enough questions, especially around USCHO. If these players were truly on the way out, there are signs to be found. People talk, although they don't necessarily publish all the dirty laundry they know about on these threads. And asking coaches questions should never be a problem. If they don't want to answer some of the uncomfortable ones, you probably don't want to be associated with the program. There are very few true secrets in the womens hockey world. It is just too small.

One more thing, can you let it go now that the other thread is getting folks (not just disgruntled parents) to put together complete statistics and thoughtful analysis of the specific situations around the statistics? And note that I did say something nice about that discussion because it is interesting and intellegent.

Oh, that's right, you are here to settle a score. Good Luck.

"don't apply ED"....Can you explain that term. It's foreign to me.
