Discussion on Coaches Developing Players (copied from Princeton thread)

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

Weber's shutout streak ends, but not before setting an ECAC record. And the Tigers win their seventh straight, and get back to .500, which earlier this season I would have thought impossible. Now a home-ice playoff series is in play.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

Is Weber a senior? Where did she play before coming to Princeton?

She was recruited by Princeton in the 08-09 class. That would make her a Jr by my count. Played for the Minnesota Thoroughbreds, hails from Wisconsin.

Princeton 08-09 recruit class*
Danielle DiCesare............F.............(Assabet Valley)..............................York, ME
Ann-Marie Elvin..............D.........(USA 18s/Boston Latin)............West Roxbury, MA
Julie Johnson.................F..............(NSA-Canada)............................Calgary, AB
Heather Landry..............F................(Middlesex).. .........................Lexington, MA
Paula Romanchuck.........F.............(San Jose Sharks).......................San Jose, CA
Charissa Stadnyk...........F...............(NSA-Canada).............................Calgary, AB
Rachel Weber...............G........(Minnesota Thoroughbreds)..................Hudson, WI

Just for the record it's Charrisa Stadnyk...with a Y.

Weber continues her hot streak with another shutout. The Tigers have won eight games in a row, and Weber has six shutouts in that streak (allowing a total of 3 goals over the eight games). Tonight she made the most amazing save I've seen in ten-plus years of attending games at Baker Rink. The Saint player had a rebound in the crease, with Weber out of position. It should have been a simple chore to knock the puck into an empty net, but Weber launched herself sideways, extending her glove out as far as it could go, and managed to block the puck. Moments later, Stadnyk scored the Tigers' first goal, in what was in essence a two-goal swing, and that was really the game right there.

I said in the Kaz thread Weber was set to be second team All ECAC but it seems clear now she's the favorite for No. 1.

Princeton's run has been impressive though the schedule has been soft, with the toughest foes being a Quinnipac team trending downward (or very inconsistent) and a shorthanded BC team. The Harvard-Dartmouth weekend will be an opportunity to prove themselves as No. 2 in the ECAC and top ten nationally, and Weber could yet prove herself deserving as Kaz Top 10.

Too bad they already had their two bites at Cornell, but there's always the postseason.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

after spending a delightful weekend in Baker rink, I am convinced there is no hotter goalie right now than Ms Weber. Perhaps Team USA should be giving her a look for the Worlds. She is definitely deserving of a camp invite at least

Princeton was up 2-0 on Clarkson when I wrote this, oops.

Did the team think the win was as much a foregone conclusion as I.did?

Princeton was never up 2-0; they were up 1-0 for much of the game, then fell behind 3-1 in the third, and got an ENG goal late to make it 3-2.

Weber kept this game from being a rout. Clarkson outshot us 44-22, and in periods one and two totally outplayed us. The camels' back finally broke in the third period. If anything, look for Clarkson as a dangerous team the rest of the way.

Ms Rigsby( and Ms Sperry probably) has the best shot at that invite given their strength in schedule.

Aren't they in the middle of the pack of the ECAC right now? Wins vs Harvard & Dart will not move the to #2 .I think Ms Mazzotta might have #1 locked up at this point.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

In addition to their ECAC opponents, Princeton plays a tough OOC schedule. With all due respect to the Tigers, the other goalies you mentioned have significantly stronger teams in front of them, which is exactly why Ms. Weber is deserving of an invite. This is not to suggest that the other goalies you mentioned are not deserving as well.

Princetons OOC schedule pales in comparison to what Wisconsin plays week in and week out, While there are better teams in front of those goalies, they get tested by better players in closely contested games on a regular basis. It is completely different when a middle of the pack team is not competing well with those better teams. USA Hockey doesnt need goalies who can stand on the head when the face 50 shots (because their team wont win even if the goalie has a shutout), they need battle tested veterans who can handle the highest pressure,

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

I always thought a goalie's main job was to stop the puck. Someone who can stop 50 shots a game is at least deserving of a shot at a USA camp. Am I to surmize that if a player is not on one of a handful of "elite" D1 teams they are deemed not worthy of a chance at a USA camp?

If Princeton won those games, they'd be favorite against anyone but Cornell in the ECAC regardless of standings.

But no matter. Looks as if Clarkson is finally playing to potential last 3 weekends, and they're third-best in the league behind Harvard and Cornell, same top 3 as last year

And some goalies are more sucessful when they see a tremendous amount of shots. That is not what they will see in international play. Those types of goalies in the past have been in the U-22 mix and the 50 shots a game did not prepare them for the international stage( aka Canada) leaving them with limited sucess at best. In essence the types of goalies we are discussing are at two different ends of the spectrum mentally. The 50 shots a game goalie has not helped the US to climb to the top of the podium.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

Not sure of your what you mean by " the types of goalies we are discussing are at two different ends of the spectrum mentally". In addition, the USA has only been to the top of the podium once in the last several Olympics. I am saying give some of these other players a shot, take a look at a larger player pool and see how they perform. USA hockey can only gain by having a larger pool of players to choose from( see Canada)

While Clarkson is working a four game win streak, playing a bit better of late, they are Not top 3 in ECAC. Clarkson is currently fifth in the ECAC. Top three are Cornell, Harvard and Dartmouth in that order. Having seen most of these teams play twice, I'd say 1-2 spots are a good reflection of the top 2. IMHO the third spot is up for grabs still, with 4 teams in a serious hunt for it.

I wasn't talking about the standings, but how I would vote in a poll today. Certainly Clarkson struggled early but their recent few weekends are more impressive than anything Dartmourh has done to date. Anyway, i'll stop hijacking the Princeton thread.

Nice that the Tigers got back on the winning track with a win in Cambridge. It's a thick knot in the standings for the third through eighth position now. Should be exciting down the stretch.
