Some results from 10/28:

Exhibition: Plattsburgh 2 - St. Michaels 1. The Cardinals had control of things for most of the game and had a 2-0 lead on goals from transfer Julia Masotta and freshman Emma McLean in the third when Purple Knights forward Meghan Kennard split the defenders and scored on the break against the Cardinal goalie Nease. St. Michaels had momentum but a player's overskating the puck and a penalty while defending the ensuing rush the other way was enough to throw the Purple Knights from their horses. A lot of new looks for the Cardinals lines and defensive pairs. All 4 centers were playing their first game as Cardinals with returning centers Calhoun scratched and Schmelzer (who was a center prior to her shift to the blue line last season) played at RW. Rematch tomorrow.

Alvernia 11 - Hilbert 1 - Hilbert loses badly in their debut game. The box score indicates they had six forwards and three defenders, playing all six forwards but only 3 of 4 defenders on their listed roster. Alvernia only had one hat trick with RW Olivia Gilida scoring three. The Wolves had six different goal-scorers. Hilbert travels to Hershey Park to play Lebanon Valley while Alvernia hosts Canton.

Buff State 1 - Wilkes 0 - Sage Running Rabbit broke a scoreless tie with 30 seconds left in regulation to secure a win in game 1 of the season. This was a bit of redemption for Running Rabbit who had a shot on an empty net get blocked by a Wilkes defender. The net was empty due to Wilkes' goalie crashing into a defender behind the goal. Rematch tomorrow.

Stevenson 4 - Trine 3 - Hannah Labbe scored the goal 3 minutes into a five minute OT period. Rematch tomorrow.

Canton 5 - Lebanon Valley 4 - Canton outshot LVC in their own barn 43-18 but only managed to pull out a one-goal victory when Iida Laitinen scored with 3 minutes and change left in the game. LVC hosts Hilbert tomorrow.

Elmira 3 - Utica 2 - Elmira scored at just under 4 minutes in but Utica would fight back with two goals in succession midway through the first. Elmira would have to battle until 9 seconds left in the 2nd to tie it at 2. Freshman MK Boyle would score with just under 3 minutes left in the 3rd to give Elmira the win. Both teams are off until next Friday.

Worcester State 5 - Nichols 4 - A bit of a heartbreaker for Nichols. Down 3-0 midway in the game, they would claw one back for 3-1 only to drop down to a 4-1 deficit two minutes into the 3rd. Nichols would battle back scoring two in the middle part of the third and finally tie it at 4 with 21 seconds left in regulation. That momentum wouldn't carry as Worcester State would score 20 seconds into OT. Clare Conway would score a hat trick and an assist for Worcester State to lead the way.

Augsburg 4 - UW-River Falls 3 - In what might be the upset of the weekend, Augsburg overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first on the back on two goals from Katie Flynn to tie the game. Nora Stepan would give the visitors the lead with a shorty late in the second, and Kennedy Stein would add the 4th goal 22 seconds into the 3rd period. Emma Schmitz would get one back for River Falls with 43 seconds left on the clock (box doesn't note if it was an extra attacker goal or not). This game also had quite a few of the rougher penalties called with a cross-check, roughing and a slash added into your standard trips, hooks and holds.

Endicott 4 - Southern Maine 3 - Quin Healy scores with two minutes left in regulation to cap off a game that saw the Gulls come back from an early 1-0 deficit to take a 3-1 lead into the third period. The Gulls would see that lead evaporate when Peyton Dukas and Olivia Steward scored for USM roughly 90 seconds apart.

Worcester State 3 - Plymouth State 2 - Worcester State made it 3-0 early in the second and Plymouth couldn't quite go as far as Nichols did against them yesterday.

Alvernia 2 - SUNY Canton 2

Lebanon Valley 7 - Hilbert 0 -Not as bad a showing for shorthanded Hilbert today as yesterday, but they still lost big.

Sweeps:

Exhibition: Plattsburgh 6 - St. Michaels 0 - Plattsburgh scored two goals in a minute in two different points of the first (2 in the first minute and 2 more around the 16th minute) to take a commanding 4-0 lead after 1 and never let up. The Cardinals scored two more 90 seconds apart in the second to make it 6-0 and then skated with the Purple Knights to a scoreless 3rd. After Nease played the whole game yesterday, the other two goalies Beaubien and Davis split duties down the middle today. The Cardinals first games that count are next weekend at Morrisville.

Adrian 5 - Oswego 0 - Adrian scored 3 power play goals to win their opening weekend series.

UW-SP 4 - St. Olaf 1 - Stevens Point built a 4-0 lead to take into the final period and would have avenged yesterday's loss with a shutout had it not been for a goal from Annika Patterson with 42 seconds left on the clock to put St. Olaf on the scoreboard.

Hamline 3 - St. Norbert 2 - Nikki Olund scored two goals and Sydney Lemke added a third to help the Pipers get their win back.

Very exciting game that saw four goals in the last 3 mins of regulation but also saw a scary incident with a Norwich player stretchered off the ice in the 3rd.

Norwich's Teft opened scoring in the first with a snipe of the Cardinal goalie Nease.

Plattsburgh responded with a strong open to the second period with Olshansky tapping in a rebound of a Krauseneck shot to tie and Nicole Unsworth adding to her career goals tally against the Cadets for the 2-1 lead, both within the first 5 mins of the period.

Girouard would tie it for Norwich midway through the period and they went tied 2-2 into the dressing room.

Things were even in the early third. Around 7 minutes into the period defender Neris Archambault was in the mid slot of the Cadets zone facing the point when Plattsburgh first year McLean collided with her and she had to be stretchered off the ice.

Play resumed after a long break. The Cardinals had control of most of play when it resumed and was able to take a 3-2 lead when Sara Krauseneck took a pass from defender Balfour and skated through the circle and fired at goalie Leocadia Clark and the puck would bounce off Clark into the goal with 2:53 left in the period.

The Cadets rallied, seemingly breaking the back of the Cards. Nikki Lague tied when she fired a loose puck from the point. Nease went to her left and the puck went in past her right pad. Seconds later Girouard would beat Wasik and Caterina to get in alone on Nease and tuck it past Nease with exactly 2:00 left in regulation. Wasik also was assessed a penalty on the play, meaning the Cards would have to comeback shorthanded.

And that they did. Norwich tried to play keep-away but Sierra Benjamin was able to use her size to get the puck in the far corner of their defensive zone out to forward Masotta and then scrambled out to join her in the neutral zone and receive a pass. Benjamin did her best impression of the Cardinals' assistant coach Duquette skating through the neutral and offensive zone past the defense to shoot on the goalie's left side. Clark made the save but Masotta got a rebound out to Mattie Norton at the point who fired it over Clark's left shoulder for the tie.

Plattsburgh dominated posession in the 3 on 3 OT better than they had any point in the game but it was stopping an attempted counter attack where they sealed it. Ciara Wall was forced from the point into the neutral zone despite her size advantage but was able to poke check two different attempts to get past her along the near boards. The second of which got to Massotta who deked around a defender and scored the OT winner against her former team.

Great game. Praying fot Archambault to have a fast and full recovery.

I was at the Cardinal-Panther for the first three games and followed what I could of the final listening in the car and what River Falls was best at was keeping their opponents from getting a lot of opportunities.

Plattsburgh in particular had a lot of trouble putting plays together and was relying on their great individual players to counterpunch and keep it close.

I think Middlebury dominated play against Elmira in day one even more than RF did Plattsburgh and it confirmed that Middlebury is still far ahead of other eastern teams.

In day 2, Plattsburgh and Elmira were pretty much even on shots but the Cardinals had superior finishing ability, including three powerplays where they scored within the first 30 seconds.

I think UWRF, Midd and GAC are in a tier to themselves right now with Plattsburgh the top of the rest of the contenders: teams like Elmira, Norwich, Colby, Eau Claire, Adrian and Endicott that are still a threat to those first three come March if they can continue to improve.

I think it's hard to put Middlebury in a class by themselves just yet. They've only played a handful of games. They split with the two best teams they've played. I think we need to see a few more games (including Plattsburgh against Middlebury) before we anoint them the class of the east. (and they still may be.... I think it's just too early to say so).

I will say it is impressive for River Falls to travel to Plattsburgh and beat the Cardinals and the Panthers, but they also have a loss to 3-4-1 Augsburg. There is still a lot to be sorted out over the next several months.

Bit of a hangover from the Card/Panther as both Plattsburgh and Middlebury lost in conference play to Cortland and Amherst respectively.

Plattsburgh shut out for the first time since 2018 against Adrian. Cortland excelled at playing along the boards (especially early) and like River Falls against Plattsburgh the Red Dragoms applied a lot of pressure to prevent sustained offense. Plattsburgh will look to rebound tomorrow against an Oswego squad that defeated hapless Buffalo State 9-2 today

Plattsburgh bounces back against their loss to Cortland with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Oswego. The teams were very even throughout. Plattsburgh controlled play for a lot of the first but only came away with one goal in that period (a deflection of a Mattie Norton shot by Nicole Unsworth). Things were much more even in the second. Oswego would score in the second when a shot from Ashlyn McGrath would squirt through the goalie Nease. Oswego scored again in the second off a rebound but a premature whistle from the refs wiped the goal off the board. Play would be even until midway through the third when Nicole Unsworth, the James Harden/Kevin Durant of DIII WIH used her great iso play to counterattack a broken two on one break by Oswego into a streak up the near boards, pulling around the defender like one would a pylon and tucking the puck past the goalie Levy to put Plattsburgh up 2-1. The insurance goal came over a minute later when the defender Wasik managed to keep a blocked shot she made at the point in the zone and get it down to Olshansky along the boards. Olshansky created just enough space to get a shot off which Julia Masotta redirected over Levy's glove to make it 3-1. Oswego would get one back when after a penalty with ~3 mins left coach Digby pulled Levy and the 6 on 4 advantage created enough traffic for Laker defender Amanda Zenstein to score from the point. The Lakers would pull the goalie again but would be unable to score, so the Cardinals steal one from the Lakers, snapping the home team's 8-game winning streak.

Amherst follows up their 4-2 upset of Middlebury with another 4-2 win over Middlebury. Amherst is now 5-1 with the lone loss a game against Hamilton their first weekend.

Gustavus sweeps St. Mary's to remain perfect at 10-0.

Colby sweeps Bowdoin to remain perfect at 5-0.

Aurora is now 9-1-1 to start the season after completing a sweep against Lawrence.

Utica sweeps Alvernia to go 8-1-1.

Elmira gets to 9-2 after defeating Castleton.

The only undefeated teams in DIII WIH are GAC at 10-0, Adrian at 9-0 and Colby at 5-0.

The next week will have some big games:

Sat 12/10: UWRF @ Gustavus Adolphus, Plattsburgh vs Elmira (at Norwich), Adrian at Norwich, Hamilton vs Endicott

If GAC can sweep UWRF I think it establishes them as the heavy favorite for both hosting and winning the NCAA championship barring any upsets. IF UWRF sweeps I think they become the favorite, but not as heavily considering they have that loss to Augsburg...

Wait Wait Wait, Alice I'm having the Big One. Has the DIII poll EVER had three west teams as the top three? Had to be massive fraud in the 20 votes, how could this possibly happen, needs to be investigated and at least any East team ranked as number one. Maybe a sign of the end of life as we know it. Looking forward to the big clash Wednesday and Saturday of 1 and 2.

#1 Gusties win 2-0 on the road over #2 River Falls. Rematch this weekend

River Falls wins 3-0 [ENG] over GAC to break the 2022 runner-up's undefeated 2022-23 record. Both teams won on the road in this home and home.

Elmira currently leading Plattsburgh 1-0 in the first game of Norwich's East-West Classic. First time I can recall no commentary on a Norwich internet feed.

Plattsburgh would rally on two power plays (like the first game against Elmira scoring early in both advantages) to make it 2-1 in the 3rd. Plattsburgh would do well to keep Elmira from scoring but a shot from an Elmira defender managed to find twine with 3 mins and change left in the game.

Like in the Norwich game at home, Plattsburgh looked most dynamic playing 3 on 3, with Krauseneck, Masotta and Benjamin as one 2 F-1 D unit and Unsworth, Boric and Norton and the second. Plattsburgh had most of the OT opportunities.

In the final 20 seconds, Unsworth would be in the defensive zone and attempt a stretch pass to Boric out near the Plattsburgh bench in the neutral zone. An Elmira player intercepted right near Boric and Boric was able to back check it free and bring it in the offensive zone. She was contested at the center point area with her back to the net so she passed to Norton at the right point who was facing the right way and uncovered. Norton took a short stride to just in the top of the far circle and fired it home for the game winner.

Norwich dominates Elmira 6-0 in the third-place game of the East-West Classic. Elmira was without starting goalie Leonie Kuehberger as she left team after yesterday's loss for German national team duties.

Plattsburgh with 3 lineup changes for today's game against undefeated Adrian. The 4th line C Tatem Cheney and RW Grace Yarkosky from yesterday have been scratched and replaced with C Molly Riggi and LW Jordan Kowalski. Rivers Morris moves from LW to RW on that line. Su An Cho is also scratched with yesterday's extra skater Aizah Thompson now in the lineup as LD2 and Lily Stumm in as the extra skater.

Plattsburgh defeats Adrian 1-0 on a power play goal from Sara Krauseneck with 3 minutes and change left in the 3rd. Adrian and Plattsburgh played very even with the Bulldogs taking a slight edge in shots.

The only undefeated team in DIII WIH is now Colby, which is 6-0 with no games against ranked opponents.

Great defensive battle; the best the Cardinals have played all year. Tough penalty call against Adrian; could not see it online and the broadcast does not do replays. Wondering if the refs should have let it go. Glad they took advantage.

The win didn’t do much for their PWR. A rematch win over Midd in January would carry a lot of weight against their schedule with top NESCAC schools.

Congrats on their 7th tournament title!

The PWR om USCHO has an error. The records reflect as if the East-West Classic had opposite results in today's games (it lists Adrian undefeated at 11-0, Plattsburgh as 10-3 instead of 11-2, Norwich at 7-4 instead of 8-3 and Elmira at 10-3 instead of 9-4).

Even if the PWR didn't have data errors (if these are wrong, what else is?) we still need the NESCAC to play a few more games each (especially in-conference) to get a model of what things might look like in March

Gustavus Adolphus defeated rhe Austrian National Team in a shootout in game 1 of a two game set today. The rematch is tomorrow.

The Austrian National Team is playing GAC as part of a training camp the new head coach organized in the city of Innsbruck (located in the Alps about 160 km south of Munich in Germany). He did not have any of the Austrian team players playing professionally in Sweden at this camp or these games, citing his familiarity with those players and the need to learn about the other players in the program.

GAC sweeps the Austrian National Team with a 3-2 overtime win. The game was scoreless until midway in the 3rd when Austria score to make it 1-0.

GAC would tie on a power play with 5 mins left and take a 2-1 lead around 2 minutes later. Austria forced OT with a game-tying goal with 90 seconds left.

Brooke Power would score the OT goal for the Gusties.
