Plattsburgh skated to a convincing 3-1 win over visiting Norwich in a matchup of top ranked teams. The initial four minutes went back and forth with no shots and some physical play. The Cardinals soon set up in the Norwich zone and Cadet goalie Robert stoned Lipson with two nifty left pad saves. The Cardinals scored first when Brand advanced the puck up the left D zone boards to Sheeran; a quick chip self pass off the boards and a 2x1 developed. Sheeran fed Meneghin racing into the zone and a perfect tic-tac-goal resulted with Meneghin holding the puck, forcing goalie Robert to defend her gloveside, and then slipping the puck left back to Sheeran, who scored under Robert. The Cadets evened the score minutes later with Labbe and Murphy digging the puck from deep in the right corner and Murphy hitting Conway at the top of the crease for a one time jam in beneath Plattsburgh's Leonard. Meneghin and Sheeran put the Cardinals ahead to stay Hoskins moving the puck ahead to Sheeran who carried down the left boards into the corner and behind the net, coming out only to wrap a pass to Meneghin alone on the far stickside post for the tip in. Soon after Robert left the ice and King played the remainder of the period, with Robert returning for the 3rd period. The Cadets played a feisty 3rd and Robert's outstanding play thwarted the Cardinals despite the overwhelming shot differential. Norwich was able to get some pressure late in the game and got the goalie off only to have Ames fight the puck from a scrum in front of the Norwich bench and slide it just fast enough to beat the horn for the 3-1 final.
So, will anyone beat Plattsburgh? Maybe, but they will get better. They are like whippet quick and you better not make a mistake on the blueline in your offensive zone; they constantly advance the puck; they win the 1x1s and they have Leonard backing it all up. I always enjoy watching the Cardinals and the up coming tournaments (Panther/Cardinal and East/West) will be entertaining.
Looking forward to seeing you all at a rink sometime soon!

obserbear I know you are not a Plattsburgh Homer thus I like the way you and I saw the same game differently. Convincing? It was really a 2-1 game plus a lucky empty netter with 0.6 seconds left. Clearly Plat's top line is really good and their D are solid. Leonard... the jury is out still. Helen Keller might be able to play goal for Plat some nights. I think Plat is beatable after watching them last night. If a team plays them physical the will have success, they don't like it. Plat did take 5 penalties. Their ice rink is to small and suits them the best, how the men play there is besides me. Kevin barley rolled 3 lines.

Norwich has a very solid goalie. They have a couple of forwards that can scoot but there depth is not very and their D don't make the right play often... unless wheeling it is Bolden's play.

If Norwich is top 5 team this year than it might be a 2-3 team race.

Ashton Hogan was a 4th liner at Plattsburgh, she goes to Elmira and becomes a top 6 forward and All-American. Mackenzie Lee went from a Plattsburgh 4th liner as an underclassman to leading Oswego in points both seasons she played there after transferring. Lizzie Aveson (Sydney's little sister) barely played the one season at Plattsburgh, transferred to UM Boston and was the 4th best scorer they had and is at the leaderboard early this season.

Unless Lucas actually plays for the Cards your claim has no way to be validated. I could just as easily predict she'd be playing on the bottom 6 like the three I just mentioned.

I have no dog in the fight, but can tell you that Lucas played on the same U19 team as Platty's best forward...and Lucas was far and away the better of the two. On a good/great team, she would be unstoppable.

Plattsburgh controlled the play for most of the second and almost all of the third until the last 4-5 minutes when Norwich turned it up a notch, if not for Robert the score would have been much worse. At times in the second and third Plattsburgh kept the puck in the Norwich defensive end for over two minutes at a time. We were seated right above the goal on the end of the rink that the Cadets defended twice. She was the whole defense for most of the game for Norwich, except for the first 15 minutes of period 1 when the play was pretty even. The shots were 45-20 with Norwich getting 6 of theirs in the last 4 minutes of the game.

Although Plattsburgh carried the play for large portions, Norwich showed a lot of resolve to only lose by one basically with an empty netter with 0.6 seconds left. The Stafford has been a house of horrors for Norwich ever since its last win over Plattsburgh in Feb. 2012, the scoring margins in nearly every game have been blowouts. The only close games were the semifinal in 2015 and last night.

Norwich has fared a little better at home against Plattsburgh. I'll be interested to see how the potential meeting on Jan. 8 at the East/West Classic goes between the two.

Definitely some encouraging things for Norwich to take from last night. Never gave up and a lot of new freshmen getting thrown into the fire against the three-time defending champions in their home opener.

I saw only most of the 3rd from my phone and agree that convincing isn't exactly the right word to use yet. So far every team they've played for the first time this year (albeit a small sample size) has been a close game followed by a more decisive victory the next game. Very promising when thinking about ECAC West, makes me nervous as a fan thinking way ahead about March. Add to it that if they can put the work in (and despite the laurels being hung on them already it will be work) and make it to a Frozen Four they will be doing it in someone else's house, which will be a first for this group. For them to win out, I think this group will need to find a higher gear to shift to but I'm confident that they have that gear left.

I'd really like to see them dominate a good team in their first game of the year against an opponent, but it's dumb to complain about a 5-0 start with a +14 goal differential.

I agree that Norwich hung in there....also remember Platty hit the pipe twice and there was possibly a third but I cannot sy for sure because it was in the second period when the play was at the other end. As I said, Norwich played their best hockey of the night in the last 4 minutes of the game, who knows what it might have been if they would have turned it up sooner.

I love that we all seem to have different views of the game. From my perspective, I agree with both the statement that Plattsburgh carried the play AND the statement that it was far from a convincing win for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh dominated possession, and the shot count naturally reflects that. Norwich even had a couple Powerplays where they were pinned in their own zone for at least half the duration of the penalty. On the other hand, the Plattsburgh offense is still trying to find its chemistry overall. Yeah, Meneghin and Sheeran still work well together, but there were a lot of errant passes or breakdowns of communication in the offensive zone across the whole team. Plattsburgh was able maintain possession by either beating Norwich to the loose puck, quickly pressuring Norwich defenders before they can clear the zone, or cutting Norwich off in the neutral zone.

Also, credit to Robert for keeping wick in the game at times (and credit the post for doing the same once or twice). She played well, and made some clutch saves. But the majority of her saves were shots straight into her chest.

Bottom line: Plattsburgh controlled play through most of the game, but it was far from a convincingly dominant win. A couple bounces Plattsburgh's way and this was a blowout, but a few bounces Norwich's way and the team in maroon would have been celebrating at the end of the night.




As an aside: the officiating was sub-par in my opinion, but I don't think it dictated the result. Missed some things that were blatantly penalties, then called some things that were blatantly not... and that was true for both teams (although Bolding was by far the more vocal in complaining about it). I usually try to give the guys in stripes the benefit of the doubt (anybody who sits near me for Men's games can attest that I am frequently nodding my head in agreement with the refs while he rest of the Plattsburgh crowd is booing), but I believe there were quite a few mistakes last evening. Plattsburgh got a way with a few trips, an interference or two, and one play where they had about 7 players on the ice. Conversely, the trips, holding and interference that went uncalled against the Cadets were similar in number. And I wish I could get a second look at the body-checking penalty against Hulst, because watching at game speed through my red-tinted glasses it looked like she was intentionally aiming high, but I'm not going to definitively make the accusation without the benefit of a replay. Also, I couldn't see the Norwich goal so I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I later learned from people who were perfectly situated to see it that the puck "clearly" crossed the line... after the whistle was blown. (Not that it affected the result in the end)

I just want to add to my analysis of the game: it was a pleasure meeting you, sir. Like I said, I'll be at Day 2 of the Panther/Cardinal, and I'll definitely be at both days of the East/West. I look forward to seeing you at each!

Norwich certainly didn't let Wednesday's loss put them in a malaise, 8-0 over St. Michael's with only 1 of them on the Power Play.

This isn't a surprise is it?! I would think beating a program that averages less than 5 wins a year isn't really an accomplishment to boast about for a team like Norwich. They just beat a team that is off to an 0-7-0 start with only 4 GF and not a game yet with more than 1 GF. Looking at their history I see it's the same and only coach they've ever had now in his 17th year with a stellar .193 winning percentage! They've only won more than 6 games in a season once and that was 8 wins in 2007-08. Holy puck! That's incredible!

I wasn't surprised at all that Norwich beat St. Michael's, I noted it because it was the most notable score of the games that finished at the time I posted and it was a contrast to the result Norwich had two days ago. Also, I thought it was noteworthy because in many games where one team runs away with it, even against bad teams, it seems like there are multiple PPGs where Norwich scored 7/8 at even strength.

It took them their third series, but Plattsburgh has their first blowout win in a Game 1 on a weekend of the season, dispatching #9 Oswego 7-1. Lipson and Meneghin each with a pair of goals and Julia Duquette with 3 assists from the blue line. Mackenzie Millen with 2 assists today after sitting against Norwich on Wednesday. I would call this one convincing.

With Oswego leading shots 2-0 at 7:30 into the first period, I was worried. But once they got the 1st goal, Plattsburgh picked up the pace and Oswego just couldn't keep up.

In things I never thought I would ever see....The Oswego WOMEN take down Plattsburgh 3-2 today for first win in 28 attempts.

First off, congrats to the ladies on the Oswego team on a hard-fought win.

I'm wondering what this does to the polls. Both #1 and #2 in Plattsburgh and UWRF fell in upsets this weekend to 5-1. Elmira and Adrian are now 6-0 and while Adrian has defeated one ranked team, Elmira has yet to play one. Considering the split in the Plattsburgh series I don't think it would be fair to rank them below both of those teams.

I would put it at:

1) Adrian
2) Plattsburgh
3) Elmira
4) UWRF
5) Middlebury
6) Norwich
7) Oswego
8) Lake Forest
9) Augsburg (Good split vs the Gusties)
10) Connecticut College (Swept #7 Amherst)

Amherst got swept and St. Thomas had a loss and a tie this weekend so they go from the lower end to outside of my poll.
