DIII game notes

Re: DIII game notes

Mostly agree...but no way Endicott should be ranked...Several teams better including Amherst, Hamilton, UMB and [despite their record]...Trinity.

I was doing it based on the current poll plus this week's results. Of the teams just behind Endicott in the poll, Hamilton and Augsburg are 1-1 and Amherst is 0-1-1 on the week. I would be very surprised to see any of those three or UMB or Trinity (both 0-1 this week and who haven't been getting many votes in prior polls) jump Endicott who is 2-1 on the week.

I think inactive Oswego is more likely to fall out than Endicott...

Re: DIII game notes

I would like to thank Norwich and Coach Bolding for the great experience they have created in hosting the annual East/West. I was only in attendance Sunday, but it was a pleasure to watch competition at such a high level and catch up with so many fans of women's DIII. It was interesting to see Adrian's second trip East this season (we may get to return the favor with a trip out to Michigan in March) and always fun to watch Plattsburgh , Norwich and Elmira. Thank you!

Thanks for not saying hi....

Re: DIII game notes

Sorry Derek, but every time I went by you seemed working hard and absorbed in your tasks...I am sure your efforts are major contributions to the success of the East/West. Thanks again for the wonderful tournament!

Re: DIII game notes

So when Celeste Robert of Norwich got pulled so early yesterday against Plattsburgh it seemed like deja vu. And I turned out to be right. In 7 career starts against Plattsburgh, Robert has given up 16 goals and been pulled from the game 5 of 7 times. Has any other goalie been pulled that often against a single opponent? Why didn't Bolding just go with King since she usually ends up finishing the game anyway?

Endicott has played a fairly week schedule so far, not sure how they are ranked over teams who have played a much more difficult schedule, like the Amhersts, Hamiltons and UMB's.

Because it's a voting thing and a lot of voters don't do the research.

I had that exact conversation with several people BEFORE the game... Robert is by no means a bad goaltender, but King has the hot hand lately and Plattsburgh seems to have Robert's number. Would it have changed the result? Maybe, maybe Not.

Agreed. That's why Plattsburgh is so successful...superior coaching without a doubt, although this hockey decision was one that anybody could have made. The arrogant Bolding gets schooled yet again. Maybe he'll learn a lesson this time and apply it when playoffs roll around for the team's sake.

Re: DIII game notes

Here's how I think the Top 10 might look after this weekend:

1) Plattsburgh
2) UW-River Falls
3) Norwich
4) Adrian
5) Elmira
6) Lake Forest
7) Middlebury
8) Connecticut College
9) Oswego
10) Endicott

USCHO poll is out and other than my bad prediction about Middlebury and Lake Forest swapping spots due to Midd's tie, it came out as expected.

1 Plattsburgh (15)
2 Wisconsin-River Falls
3 Norwich
4 Adrian
5 Elmira
6 Middlebury
7 Lake Forest
8 Connecticut College
9 Oswego
10 Endicott

D3hockey.com matches until the last 3 spots where Oswego and Connecticut College swap at 8 and 9 and Bowdoin is 10 instead of Endicott.
# School (1st votes)
1 Plattsburgh State (15)
2 UW-River Falls
3 Norwich
4 Adrian
5 Elmira
6 Middlebury
7 Lake Forest
8 Oswego State
9 Connecticut College
10 Bowdoin

Bowdoin makes so much more sense than Endicott, but Oswego ahead of Conn College? I don't think so.

What I make of it is that SOS matters more to D3hockey.com voters. It's how Endicott falls out to Bowdoin while Oswego ranks above Conn College. USCHO voters value the record more than SOS which is how you get Connecticut College higher than Oswego (one less loss) and Endicott at 12-1-1 over 7-2-2 Bowdoin.

Re: DIII game notes

Is there no live video for this game? If not, that's brutal. Oh wait, I just remembered that last year Derek said it costs too much money to broadcast games that Norwich isn't playing in. What a joke.

To the person who put this comment in my rep: "Somehow Middlebury and Plattsburgh can scrape the cash together." Agreed, and they aren't the only ones. It's hard to believe a school would host a tournament (especially a school with such a high commitment to hockey) but then choose to only broadcast games that its team played in and then make the ridiculous excuse that it's too expensive to do more than its own games when other schools that host tournaments are "somehow" finding the funds to broadcast all games of their tournaments. Come on Norwich, step up and do it right from now on!

Re: DIII game notes

Plattsburgh up 8-0 on Chatham middlet of the 2nd including scoring with 1.6 left in the 1st and 16 seconds into the 2nd.

This score equals Elmira's best score against Chatham, 8-0 on November 12

Edit: End of 2, Plattsburgh up 9-0, Meneghin with a hat trick and Sheeran topping that with 4 goals and an assist on all of Meneghin's goals

Edit: 10-0 final. Wolf scores her first collegiate goal as the only score of the third

Shots for the 3rd period were 5-1 in Plattsburgh's favor. Meneghin's third goal was the last time either Meneghin or Sheeran were on the ice in the game, and that was early in the 2nd. Coach Houle not only switched up the lines, he also swapped some Ds with some Fs.

Guessing we see Abbott tomorrow for Game 2.

I think playing Abbott tomorrow is the sensible thing. Unless Houle wants to help Leonard try to get to the wins record as quickly as possible, that is. Oh, and Leonard is now tied for 2nd all-time in Shutouts, but is still 5 off Aveson's record of 31. That said, the focus should be on what's best for the team, and getting Abbott some game time is the better option IMO.

Do they even need a goalie? Why don't they try harder today to score more goals than they give up shots. Yesterday was 10 goals for and 10 shots against.

I bet Houle is not going to miss the trip to Pittsburgh anymore!

Re: DIII game notes

I don't know if this was brought up here previously, but I just stumbled across the Annual Report from the DIII Women's Ice Hockey Committee way back in June

Highlights:

The "One In Four" rule was confirmed, so the Highest Seeded Western Team who makes it to the Final Four and has adequate facilities will host the Championship this season. Also, video replay will be used at the Championship site, and the Committee expressed co to use support for making the DI and DIII WIH Championships a combined event at a predetermined site.

The increase from 8 to 9 teams was rejected by the Championship Committee, so the DIII WIH Committee asked them to reconsider. (But the men were approved to go from 11 to 12)

In the event the WIH Championships and MIH QFs have the potential to conflict (à la Plattsburgh 2015), the school has to announce BEFORE the brackets are made which they would prefer to host.

Just an update, I got curious as to what happened with the request to reconsider the expansion from 8 to 9 teams, so I went digging and found it addressed in the September 2016 NCAA Championships Committee meeting. Here were the notes for DIII Women's Hockey. The answer is in item #3, although item #4 is also noteworthy...

(1) Automatic Qualification. The committee approved that the following five
conferences receive automatic qualification for the 2017 Division III Women’s
Ice Hockey Championship: ECAC DIII Women’s West Hockey League;
Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference; New England Hockey
Conference; New England Small College Athletic Conference; and Women’s
Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

(2) Committee Chair. The committee approved that Katie Boldvich, commissioner
of the Colonial Hockey Conference and the New England Hockey Conference,
serve as chair of the Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Committee.

(3) Budget Requests. The committee tabled the recommendations to require video
replay at all games at the finals site and to increase the fees for referees and
linesmen, add a fee for the replay official, and provide a stipend to the
supervisor of officials at the finals site. The recommendations will be reviewed
during the committee’s February 2016 in-person meeting along with all
Division III championship budget requests. In addition, the committee did not
approve that the championship field be increased from eight to nine teams
. The
committee reaffirmed commitment to the policy of maintaining even-sized
brackets, but agreed to examine during its February meeting whether sports with
lower sponsorship should merit an exception
to this policy.

(4) Rankings. The committee did not approve a change to the rankings policy to
allow that the sport region with the fewer teams rank a minimum of six teams,
and that the proportionate percentage of teams ranked apply to the opposite
region. The committee was not comfortable providing an exception to the team
rankings policy (i.e., each region to rank 15 to 21 percent of teams).

It is indeed Abbott in net today.
