I eat diary but only Lactose free diary, aged cheeses and homemade yogurt that is fermented 24 hrs instead of the usual 4 to 6 hrs.

Its not an easy diet to follow if you start reading packages. everything has sugar in it including whole Chickens and Turkeys. Why they need sugar is beyond me? lots of stuff has grains in it and in the US 2% of the ingredients doesn't have to be listed on the label. Even spices have may have stuff in it to make the spice flow and not cake up.

Yeah the amount of not real food in our "food" is scary.

I've now done two Whole30s this year. The first few days really do stink as you go through sugar withdrawal. Then it just becomes trying to find the food to make and trying to live off of water, tea, and black coffee. Also, if you have an iPad, I would definitely recommend the nom nom paleo app. She has an entire section for Whole30 recipes.

When I finished, I found out that I have a real sensitivity to gluten and milk. Yogurt and cheese don't seem to bother me, but adios milk and anything good that comes from wheat.

Yeah I am pretty sure I am sensative to both, it will be interesting to really investigate the whole dairy situation when I am done, maybe some dairy will be ok?

Winger, have you read their book It Starts With Food? Terrific read.

I have, got it when it came out!! I have seen Melissa and Dallas speak twice, I totally "got it" when I saw them the first time.

What they say makes so much sense... but it doesn't make it any easier to try to get everything in balance... hmph

Out of curiosity, are there any grains at all allowed on the whole 30 plan? For example, is rice or quinoa allowed?

Nope. No oats, grains, quinoa, rice, barley, etc. While rice isn't that bad in comparison to the others when it comes to the affect it has on your intestines, for the first 30 days you want to avoid it to allow your digestive system time to recover. I'd definitely read It Starts With Food if you are considering doing a Whole30. They provide a lot of info with the guide for the Whole30, but the book goes into so much more depth and makes it all make sense.

What kind of carbs are allowed? My fear with this kind of diet is that you lose a lot of energy (and can't exercise) with such a radical reduction in carbs. Don't you need some carbs?

From what I gather, fruit and starchy vegetables are allowed. It's the bread and grains that are not.

We'll see if my internal rage can win out over my equally powerful internal desire to lay on the couch.

So. Since I last rolled in here.
-1st marathon: 3:58 on a course that was .5 long. Hey, I finished. I'll take it.
-1st real-actual-trail race. 13.1, 2:44, and I fell <10 times. Bruises galore, but I finished the * thing.
-<50 to go on my goal of 1,000 miles this year.

Last week, the dietitian put me on a 2,000 calorie diet because of the fact I gained 15 lbs in two months and my activity has been reduced. Need to watch the bread intake; whenever I'm under stress, it's what I reach for.

Paleo/Whole 9 people: how do you handle drinking? I take it that beer is off-limits....

Also, I'm ending the year exactly where I started.

If you're doing a whole30, all booze is out. However, if you're just eating that lifestyle, there's nothing stopping you from having an adult beverage. It's not a form of eating where you have to follow it or some carb nazi (like atkins or south beach) will come to your house and kick your dog.

Carbs are legal in Paleo, beer isn't.

Most people who eat paleo are in an 80/20 balance of eating paleo to not. Paleo wants to get away from the gluten based simple carbs, but going completely carb free in general is never going to happen. There are a lot of carbs in vegetables, so to go carb free is to starve yourself.

As for booze, again, I'm pretty sure if you choose to indulge, no one is going to beat you up. I'm part of the 80/20 group and I am pretty sure there is a 6 pack of 16oz Narragansetts in my fridge that will be consumed with my sushi tonight.

But yeah, marsdailyapple is a good site.

What should we can do to reduce our weight?I am overweight and tried many products like slimming pills etc.

Step 1) Don't eat diet foods... they are just loaded with chemicals that while you may lose weight, you certainly won't be healthier. This includes fat free, low fat, and any type of slimming pill out there

Step 2) Eat real foods. Stick to the outside of the grocery store. Eat meat, veggies, healthy fats. Try to avoid processed food if you can, but getting rid of it altogether cold turkey can be hard.

Step 3) Move. Try to get between 30-60 minutes a day of moderate activity. The more you do the more intensity will be required to get to that moderate level. Don't be afraid of weights either. Lifting weights isn't going to turn you into a body builder, it'll burn more fat than if you just did cardio.

Step 4) Have fun.

A bit sarcastic, but essentially true.

I did it by counting carlories and carbs. Eliminate empty carbs (refined sugar, white bread, potatoes, etc.) and get your carbs from veggies and fruit. But don't eliminate carbs entiurely. A dietician told me if you do that, you'll lose muscle as well as fat.

Everything you buy in this country has nutritional information on it. Use that information to your advantage. And log everything you eat. It helps you stay on track.

Doing this, I've lost 80 lbs, dropped my bood pressure by 40 points, and cut my cholesterol in half - since November. I won't tell you it's easy, but it is effective. More so than any diet supplement or fad diet.
