Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Does anyone in here experience nausea after taking a multivitamin?
Yes. Once, on my way to work, I had to pull over and get out of my car because I was so nauseous. I take it after eating a good sized meal (usually lunch), which seems to help. I also take it with a 4oz glass of milk to help coat the stomach.

Not really, though I've heard of it. Make sure to take it during/after a full meal, and wash the vitamin down with lots of water.

Also try splitting the vitamin in half. Take half in the morning and half in the afternoon. Enables your body to digest more of the nutrients.

Huh, that's worth trying. Thanks!

It's actually recommended if you're taking calcium to take it in several doses since the body will only absorb about 500mg at a time and then just excrete the rest (WOO! Yeah Nursing Nutrition textbook!)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Does the Multi have Iron in it? Iron is bad for the gut and will make your stomach roll.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Just because that's what they recommend you eat doesn't mean you have to eat it.
You know, it might not be a bad idea to food journal again. It doesn't always have to be the negative influence it once was. I check in and log a week or so every 6 weeks just to make sure I'm doing what I should be.
I figured out the main culprits: white sugar and white bread. I already decided to NOT bring home everything I make in class, and I also am researching ways to switch to organic sugars and flours in my own baking.

And until I get my weight under control, I decided to use the elliptical and stationary bike to help ease the strain on my knees.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Indeed it does. That's why I take it, actually.

Iron is hard on the stomach, it bothers some folks badly. You might be one. Might try another multi without iron and see if that helps. If you want the iron You might try
dessicated liver tablets. I take these, http://www.amazon.com/Solgar-Desiccated-Liver-250-tablets/dp/B0002I25LC they aren't easy to swallow and smell kinda bad. I'll know if they work in a few weeks when I get another blood test, my stored ferritin? is way low so I'm trying to up it. They don't upset my stomach anyway

Thanks for the info, I will have to look in to that.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Well, yeah, if that's your mind set going in. Try focusing on positives, and the fun challenge of tweaking your recipes. Use your creativity.
I've got help coming in that regard. My instructor at the CIM is helping me find the conversion rates for honey, agave, and maple syrup vs. white sugar, and I've also asked my friends at Laughing Tree bakery what sweeteners they use. They've suggested organic evaporated cane juice, and have also told me to match the sweetener with whatever I'm baking.

And by suck, I meant the withdrawals. I've experienced the sugar sweats, and am starting to get cranky.

Using all those sugar substitutes most likely won't have the effect you're hoping for because you're still getting some form of sugar in your system.

Actually, I will. Honey and agave have a lower glycemic impact, which means they don't send your blood sugar into the stratosphere upon consumption. On top of that, I've been a believer in Local, Seasonal, and Organic, ie, "Real" food for the last couple years, and pushing to use natural sugars is part of that belief.

What about flour? What do those empty carbs do for ya?

you can gain just as much weight with organic/local sweeteners. I'm a big localvore. I have a CSA share and still shop at the farmers market, buy local pastured grass fed beef, hired a farmer raise a pig for me, etc. I have a $40 half gallon bottle of organic Maine maple syrup in my fridge -- I would drink shots of that stuff it it weren't for the empty calories! Sure, I think organic/local/real food is healthier, but that doesn't mean it is all OK for someone trying to lose weight. It's like the "gluten free" fad -- people are convinced it is better for them, but most people that go on a gluten free diet actually gain weight because they only focus on gluten (hey, this cookie is gluten free -- yum). The bacon from my pig is delicious, but it can still loaded with saturated fat and obviously has an extremely high percentage of calories from fat so I thaw a small package of it about once a month or so for the family, which lasts us several breakfasts.

Going back to whole grains, too. I love bread, but even I have my limits.

Part of why I'm switching too. I know I can't keep shoving cookies down my throat and expect to lose weight. I made cookies last night and it was a challenge to not lick the beater.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

I rearranged our fridge last night. The fruits and veggies are now front and center, and the other things that were on those shelves are now in the drawers where those were hidden before. In other news, I may have the first fridge ever to have a specific yogurt drawer. I think I'm personally keeping Chobani in business.

You and my wife. Two 32oz containers a week. I don't know how someone doesn't get sick of eating that day in and day out.
