Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

In 2011, I joined a gym in August for the first time in 7 years. I also started jogging. I'm close to my ideal weight now (6'2", approx 190 pounds). I lost 20 pounds and have gained flexibility and strength and I look a lot better. The jogging really helped the most (I run pretty hard), but I also cut out daily desserts and sugar soda. The downside is you have to buy new jeans, suits, etc.

For 2012, I'd like to lose another 5 pounds to get to 185 pounds. I'd like to continue to improve my stamina (I jog 3.5 miles 3-4 times a week, I'd like to get to 5 miles which isn't difficult, it's just more time). I'd also like to get stronger as most of my weight work has been easing back into to avoid injury and improve flexibility. I've mostly been using weight machines but would like to get back to some free weights. Any good site suggestions to review video on proper technique? I could use a refresher.

My back feels 100% better already. I highly recommend exercise 4-7 times a week, it works!!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

First Race of 2012:
Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard Run 10K, International Falls, Minnesota
Temperature at race time: -4, wind chill of -15
Time: 48:01
Place: 4th overall Female, 2nd in 20-29 age group (1st place was the overall race winner).

My first age group medal, my first top five finish. Small field, yeah, but you have to begin somewhere.

ETA: Official results posted. I must not be able to count. 2nd overall female.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Thanks, guys!

The sick thing is, I actually said the following statement that morning: "-4? Wow, that's not bad at all! This is going to be great!" And I was right--I was actually plenty warm, and I decided to lose the gaiter mask (ie: the Smartwool wrap covering my face from the nose down through my neck) after about a mile. I wasn't even cold until I finished.

How's everyone else's 2012 so far?

For me, healing is getting there. Although running in the snow really helps keep pressure off of my forefoot (where I broke it last summer). the only thing that keeps me from running in the cold is wind- Mrs Alfa and I ran 8 miles on Saturday, and it was a beautiful 14 outside. Felt so nice and warm in the sun after we warmed up a little. I would do -4 if it were pretty calm. Foot feels good, now I just need to get some more miles in during the week.

I weigh 245 lbs now, thanks to stress eating and a diet rich in bread. Seriously, I'm bringing lots of bread home from class.

On the good side of things, I'm still running; went out for 10 miles on Saturday. I'm also making a conscious effort to cut back my coffee intake and replace it with water. When I go out to eat, I don't instantly blurt out "coffee" when the waitress asks me what I want to drink.

+1 for the coffee thing! I'm down to 1 cup myself most days. :) In the mean time, I'm becoming quite the consumer of herbal tea.
As for the weight thing--DO NOT FOCUS ON THAT NUMBER. Seriously. I know I'm hardly one to talk (my scale has been taken away until further notice), but seriously. Identify the stressors, modify the habits. And, consider giving away your bread. Church? Nearby friends? Family in need? Pick one day a week that you bring your bread/baked goods home, and make a donation of the rest.

LOL. I know I'm not supposed to, as well. But 1.5 years ago, I was at 172, and ran a half marathon in less than 2 hours- (8:53 pace). Now that I'm up 10lb, I'm barely at 10:00. I want to run a half in less than 2 hours again. I can't remember the lb to time conversion, but my legs feel good and strong. I just don't want to haul that extra 10lb barbell. I want to see how fast I can be at 165.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

I will say this: a certain Duluth, MN native who just qualified for the Olympics in the Marathon trains 5-10 pounds above racing weight.
Not saying slimming down to a racing weight is bad, just be careful.

And I'm actually feeling much better because of the coffee cutback! I'm only brewing a half-pot in the mornings now instead of a full one, and it's been good.

As for the weight thing, I'm just scared. Scared I'm bringing back Fat Bob, even more fearful of reviving Bony Bob to keep Fat Bob at bay. I never arrived at maintenance.

Considering how thin she starts at- I'd like to get to her training form, and I'll be out of this world pleased. But I'll settle for 165 as a very tough ultimate goal to see how fast I can be.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Was going to do the following workout last night:
100 push-ups
100 bench press (60 pounds)
100 weighted sit-ups with 30lb
100 crunches
55 burpees
100 tricep extensions
100 dips
100 step-ups
100 Russians twists with 30lb

Pulled something wicked between my shoulder blades about 10 push ups in. Feel like a 90 year old man. Hurts to breath, couch, hiccup, twist, turn, bend, extend....and I just sneezed and almost collapsed in pain. Who knew the back was so important to every movement?

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Talked to my doctor about the weight gain, and she told me to get my thyroid checked and to see a dietitian. Hopefully, this one won't try dragging me back to Low-Fat Land...

Just because that's what they recommend you eat doesn't mean you have to eat it.
You know, it might not be a bad idea to food journal again. It doesn't always have to be the negative influence it once was. I check in and log a week or so every 6 weeks just to make sure I'm doing what I should be.
