Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

You have come a long way! Keep up the good work! :)

As for me, I'm up to 180, and my size 32 pants still fit. My running has benefitted from the weight gain; seems like I have a higher "fuel economy" now. I can run longer without having to reach for a gel after 45 minutes, my steps are lighter now, and it's just fun now. Last year, between being diagnosed with anemia and my mother's death, I had to wind myself up to exercise. This year, going for a run or to the gym is something I look forward to, and I hope it keeps up.

Sounds like your body is getting better... clearly losing all that weight wholesale is what you needed to do but when you get that low you aren't operating optimally... good to see you're maintaining inches while increasing weight...

I saw a post on a weightlifting site... just a post, not an article, and this was more geared at women. But the interesting idea was to consider measuring in inches instead of pounds. Women and some men will beat themselves up with the scale weight, but if you measure yourself in inches (as opposed to pounds) and you don't change much while improving function (speed or strength) then you are then probably losing fat and gaining muscle. Of course, measuring isn't an end-all be-all either (a body builder will gain inches if they don't have much fat on them)... but it can be much better than pounds for people who aren't obviously overfat.

---

not looking forward to tomorrow's workout... I lifted a 310x5 deadlift Friday... I think I'm certainly nearing a limit, the last rep was tough, took a few seconds. I may get 320... I can't imagine I'll get 330... after that, I'll have some sort of reset and then I'll start progressing weekly by 5 pounds at a time.

back problems abating, but I am continuing with lower weight and higher volume for a little while. Its a nice change of pace. Its not overly "helpful" for sports, but i'll look okay and my hockey game is doing better now that I am not injured. I think heavy lifts will not be for a little while yet, but a 400 lb squat would be nice.

We shall see.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

My 20 week training plan for the half ironman starts today. The first day is 40 minutes running and 40 minutes swimming, going to be tough after a week of nothing while I was away in Europe.

Good luck!! :)

My half-marathon training has been going great. I just lost a few days due to being KO'ed by the flu, though. I'm going to the Y today to do a little bit on the bike to ease back in, I'm hopeful that I'll be running again tomorrow. I'm going pretty consistently at an 8:40-8:50 pace, and considering that I want to race at 8:31 pace, I think I'm doing all right. :)

Must be nice to be so young... ;)

Oh- super nice job there!!!!

We are getting back to our sub 10min miles that Mrs Alfa and I were running last summer. I'd like to be able to break my 8:53/mi speed that I ran my best half with. But the overall goal is to be able to run a half marathon whenever I want. So vacation plans will include a search for runs.

I actually did that, and I am very thankful I did. I have only lost 25lbs since starting crossfit but I have lost 16 inches!!! Which is huge and if the number on the scale was the only one I had been going by I would have lost my motivation.

This is what we're trying also. I haven't gotten out the tape yet, but I am already wearing my belt for my jeans (which is a nice feeling). BF wants to do pictures monthly, so we can actually SEE the progress, but I can't stand having my picture taken, much less look at them. :o

Was sick last week, but gymmed Thurs, Fri, Sat (missed M, T, W). Taking the early part of this week off due to stress, sleep issues, and general cranky girl-ishness. I know the gym is actually the cure for all those issues, but I just can't get out of bed in the am right now. Goal is to be back in the gym on Thursday.

I start mine today as well. Starting it off with the Mark Allen lifting plan and a 1200 meter swim drill. Tomorrow includes running and spinning.

Ladies and gentlemen...here we go

And I ended up finishing my midterm early last night (and doing well), so to celebrate I went to the gym. And I went this morning. So much for taking the early part of this week off. I guess that's a good thing. :o Trying to ramp up my resistance on the elliptical and height on the treadmill so that I don't get complacent or used to running on just flat land (the only place I could do that was along the beach at my old place).

So, then... you ARE planning on playing in the posters game in Tampa, then. ;)

Unsure at this point. If I'm in school, I might not have the time off. :( Plus you haven't seen me on skates...there are no words for the hilarity. I like it, but I'm terrible! :o

How do people feel about exercising when you have a cold? Woke up this morning feeling yucky (mainly in the throat), but it's going to be the warmest day we've had in months and I was really looking forward to taking the bike out.

do what you can and if you're overwhelmed, get some comfort food, curl up on the couch, and queue up the Godzilla marathon.

Don't send yourself out for the sake of your routine if you're really feeling like crap... no purpose... your body is working hard so you need to give it the tools to recover from the infection/virus.

Sounds to me if that you can keep it to a short trip you remain within striking distance of home... if you feel better than you thought you would, just do laps :)

Personally, I have made it a point to not. I have a cold as I type, and could have gone running this morning. The problem would have been that I would be dual recovering- both from the run and from the cold. Since I know I can go for 2 weeks without working out, I'll choose to part with the cold first.

If I would have been almost done, then I would factor in the weather, as well. Again, as I type, it's 35 and raining here in SE MI. So even if I'm feeling better, the result of the run would have been being tired AND cold/wet. So....

Mrs Alfa is just getting back when I should have run with her. Next week is a better idea, as much as I want to run.

I keep going if I'm only sick from the neck up. Anything else, recover first. If you have chest congestion, coughing, etc, it's probably not a good idea.

If it's just allergies, I take my medicine and go. If it's a cold or I'm having issues with my GI tract, I stay home.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

i think these heavy deadlifts are starting to get to my right hand... had a nice black and blue yesterday... should be fine for my attempt at 330 on Friday.

If I have a fever then I stay home. Otherwise I work out.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Well, I went anyway and don't seem to be feeling any ill effects. Took a shorter ride than I'd originally been planning, but I probably would have done that anyway due to the strength/direction of the wind here yesterday.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Runny nose, headache, etc. I go. Coughing, fever, I stay home.

Been sticking to a pretty good schedule workout wise. :) Also, been making most of our food from scratch. Made homemade whole wheat bread yesterday and 1/2 whole wheat- 1/2 AP spinach pasta with homemade sauce for dinner. :)
