Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

On the plus side, I have joined a crossfit on-ramp class, and love it. The coach is great, and I really like the fact that he's taking the time to make sure we are doing every movement absolutely correctly before moving on. I'm excited to try the real thing.
Crossfit is the bomb diggity. I am starting an on-ramp next week. This affiliate is only a year old, so this is actually the first on-ramp class they are doing, before they on-ramped everyone on individually.

Of course I have the worst travel schedule ever for this, but I really dont want to wait till the end of may, so I think my on ramp is going to end up being kind of a hybrid.

further update...

looks like I'll be in St. Louis, which is a day's drive from Denver. I'm bringing my bike. I'll be able to cycle and run during the week and go home on the weekends and swim. Looks like I won't be too derailed. :)

I was going to offer you my bike if you were in Indy but Saint Louis might be a little harder for me with my may work schedule.

I have already missed 2 of the 5 sessions we have had of our on-ramp class. An we were in one class, and then joined another in progress, so it is kind of a mess. I have no idea if we're going to do the whole month, or jump in to a Crossfit Elements class before the month is over.

I'm in Indy for 10 days starting April 30th...maybe we can work something out.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Got in another good workout today, and stepped on the scale. I expected to be down between 15-17 lbs since roughly this time last month, was down almost 25. I could still improve the diet a bit, but I think I'm at least heading in the right direction.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I did not have a good week this week, guys. Between my knees and my schedule, I didn't get out running again after Monday. :(

I have a question to ask you all, though: do you guys ever catch any flack for working toward a healthy lifestyle? You know, watching what you eat, being active, all that? I actually have been lately, and it's frustrating me. :(

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I just got home from a 60 mile group ride with some serious hills (at least to me). I haven't really biked up a real hill in 3 years so that was brutal. I was barely keeping up with the 70 year old guy in our group at the end.

Yeah, I've caught flack for dieting. I don't really appear to be overweight to most people (and I'm probably not all that far overweight), so when I was counting calories to get some pounds off, some people gave me crap for it.

Yep. Usually I get the grief from the former HS jocks who have put on 150 lbs, and think they can still run a 4.5 40. I find it's often better to associate with those of a similar mindset, or at least those who don't try to tear you down to make themselves feel better. Some people just never leave high school. ;)

yeah, from all my out of shape friends who are losing their hair and acquiring a gut. jealousy breeds contempt. The other group of my friends who are pretty confident in themselves always give props though, so I guess it comes down to who your friends are!

My suggestion: F- The haters and make better friends in the meantime!

yeah, quite a bit, actually. And I concur, it's always the 300 lb fatties that seem to do it. Mostly I think it's because they don't understand or because they are jealous. I had a captain give me a hard time for running on one of my overnights. I simply invited him to come with me.

Yep; my family's been complaining loudly about the meals I make for them, saying they're too healthy and they want to eat junk food every now and then. I have to keep reminding them that if they want to eat junk food, they know where to find it, but they shouldn't expect me to make it for them.

Also, my coworkers keep telling me that they could never sustain a healthy lifestyle, saying it's too hard...

Bob... Seems to me that if they are unwilling to cook the don't get a say in the matter.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Had my first 12 miler yesterday- the farthest I've run at a single time since the half marathon last October. My small group all were pretty amazed by our progress in less than a year- we did the 12 faster than we did the half, and all of us had a little easier time, and ALL (again) felt really good after the run. So cool.

I think making the sub 2 hour half in 6 more weeks is pretty strong on all of our radars.

One "new" focus now- really controlling pace on the long runs- keeping as close to 9:30 as possible, and doing my best to keep my heart rate/precived effort as low as I can stand. And the mid-week runs- those focusing on speed in the proper area. My partner recorded our 1/4s at typically 7:30-7:50, and that was ending at 5-10k HR speed. So far, we are all noticing the effects- we are all doing 9:00 for the mid-week long runs, and we are all confident in our sub 2:00 target!

BTW- Diva- some do, some don't. Most of my friends know that Mrs Alfa and I have been doing Jazzercise for as long as we have been married, and that I could care less what they think of me- so, thankfully, the hassle has been trimmed off.

IMHO, once you keep to it long enough (parents gave our diets a hard time), and 1) you see real results- whether weight loss or race- whatever, 2) note how happy doctors are with you, and 3) you stick with it as a LIFESTYLE STUBBORNLY- most people will lay off. It does help in my household that both of us are doing this equally- so support person #1 is right next to you.

For someone like Bob, the only think I can say is just don't stop. This is one of those rare instances where thankless work for someone else is worth it. If you get complaints over too healthy of food- just tell them "I love you, too" to brush off the complaint. That IS why you do it in the first place.

I get **** from my coworkers, but I give it right back to them about how they're all going to die before they are 50 if they continue eating the crap they eat.

Yeah I think I am going to have to do a hybrid schedule, I need to all the guy and figure it out. Because all the classes build on each other, and with my travel schedule it makes it ugly. But I dont want to wait hte month to start either.

So are you starting to eat Paleo? I am slowly working towards it. My big thing this week was no soda. I will start adding in other aspects I think this week. I didnt want to do too much at once but I also want to just get the sugar detox crankiness out of the way.

My road bike needs to go into the shop, and I dont think I will have it back by then. But the Hybrid is good to go. (Heavier, but hey better work out right) Are you driving out?

My current workplace is a pretty positive enviornment for that. I talk alot to one woman who runs ultras and my boss gets up at 5am to run every morning. My last job they would make fun of it me, they would also make fun of me because I wouldnt spend alot of my money because I was using it to pay off debt. But the thought of how much better my life is going to be, how much less stressful it is going to be as I work to these goals made it pretty easier to ignore them.
Like it has already been said on here before, alot of it is jealousy and they just wish they could have the dedication and motivation to do it themselves.

I would think airline pilots just for simple comfort reasons would want to stay at least at a healthy weight. Those cockpits dont look very roomy.

You know what is funny, once you get all that junk out of your system you dont even want it anymore. But you were right to tell them if they dont like what you are cooking, they can make something for themselves.
And how messed up is that statement that you could never sustain a healthy lifestyle. What does that say about society overall.

So I just found out my friend has picked the Vegas Half/Marathon for his marathon target! It is kind of a neat project he is doing. It is called 12 goals/ 12 months. http://www.12goals12months.com/index.html I am so excited, I havent seen him in years!

I'm trying. My problem is that I really, really love sugar. The rest of it isn't that hard for me - I mostly eat lean meats and veggies, I don't drink much soda, and I eat small meals frequently.

But I love sugar and desserts. I don't eat them every day, probably twice a week, but I don't think I can cut them out without making myself miserable, and that's not the point of this for me. I don't need to lose weight, so to me, the occasional indulgence is not something I really want to give up.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I'm enjoying myself while I can - my girlfriend leaves for basic training next month in South Carolina and I've promised to take on a strenuous diet and exercise regimen while she's gone as kind of a solidarity move. I'm no Priceless, but I can definitely afford to drop a few pounds.

Looking at the points system for diet - that worked well for me when I did it last about 4 years ago. For exercise I'll probably just go with what I did when I was in basic myself, up at the arsecrack of dawn (even before dawn) for a run, ridiculous amounts of pushups and situps, etc. Even then I probably won't be able to keep up with her, since she'll have a drill sergeant telling her what to do and when to do it.

Got about three weeks left before we get started.

it's weird. Pilots are either very healthy or very unhealthy. I've flown with a lot of captains who are runners, who are triathletes, and even flew with one who was a boxer in his spare time. Conversely, I've flown with captains who eat at Chilis 3 times a day, drink 5-6 Cokes, and do nothing on the overnights.

And don't worry about the bike Winger. I appreciate it though. :)

That makes sense no reason in making yourself miserable over those little things, that amount of sugar isnt going to kill you.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

double post here, but my first race of the season is in the books. 5 mile Cherry Creek Sneak. Since Quiz and I do this race together (tradition) I was slowed up a bit (I'm faster) but we both managed a 10:16 pace, or 51:23 for me. :)

While the points system may have worked, you have to change mindsets- this isn't a diet, but how you plan on living your life. And I'm sure you don't want to be counting points the rest of your life.

Basically, start with the points, and understand how it really works so that it's no longer a "diet" but how you naturally eat without much effort.

(that, and remember, "no pain, no gain" isn't really that true over the LONG run)

Good luck, though- you'll do fine.
