Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Plans on the shop are moving forward...it will either be this Oct or next Oct. :)

and you promptly sponsor two triathletes living in Colorado?? ;) :D

The swimming is generally everyone's worst part. Triathlons end up being more you competing against yourself to make sure you can finish or meet your time goals, so as long as you are realistic about your abilities you should go for it. Like you said, there is plenty of time to train. Also, a "full" (olympic) distance triathlon has a run that is only 10k which is not that huge a step up from a 5k and definitely not as hard as a half marathon.

if you get in the pool twice a week, you can easily get done with the swim portion of the tri. It's such a relieving feeling to get out of the water that the bike leg goes by so fast.

went for a nice run this morning. I love March. It's a great month. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Just out of curiosity, how are you training for your half. You should know that 2:00 is pretty tough. I did my fastest 10k in 51:something just a few weeks prior to my first half, and I managed only a 2:08:change. Running at a 9:10 pace, average, for 2 hours isn't easy.

I hope you can do it, for sure, but you should plan on a lot of work to do it.

My next run is the Dexter-Ann Arbor half, and with a lot of work, I'm hoping to manage a 2:00 time, knowing it's tough.
Well I'll still be running 5Ks and 10Ks throughout this spring and summer, but the focus of my training will be towards the half. Right now I run about 30 MPW. My long run has been 10 miles, though I haven't hit that in a few weeks because of some knee pain and tapering a bit for the 10K. I do 5 miles of fartleks one day a week, one day of a sort of modified tempo run, and easy/average runs of 4-6 miles the other couple of days. I know it'll be tough, but I used to run a 5:30 mile in high school without proper training, so I like to think I have a natural ability for running... I just need to get in really good shape.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Sure, as long as you don't mind riding Trek's. :)

I got a Trek 1.2 right now, and obviously would like to upgrade that equipment. Prefer something with the Sioux logo painted all over it, if you know what I mean. ;)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

So my fridge is full of food I wouldn't of ate a week ago. It is making me sad, at least for now. :(

They say grammar is the first to go. :p

Went running after donating blood in the morning...not the best idea, but it's going to rain this afternoon so I figured I needed to get it in before it started. Have a nice 3.5 mile loop in my neighborhood (with dead end streets to add distance when that gets too easy). Averaging about 8mins for the mile, working on getting it down to 7, shouldn't be too hard.

it gets easier, but the sadness remaines :(
Yep. You get used to it, but there are days you want a big piece of chocolate cake and realize those days are gone...

Ran for a good 4.5 miles this morning; midway through my run, I caught an excellent second wind that let me shave close to a minute off my return trip. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

*Swallowing pride*

After over 15 years, I'd like to get back into bicycling. I walk a "little", using WI winters as an excuse (and I hate the treadmill downstairs). Back in those days, it was nothing for me to jump on my bike after work & ride 25-30 miles 5+ days a week.

This past weekend I bought a new bike. I also purchased a Schwinn recumbent (Which does have some hill-climbing programs) to get in shape for the time when the salt & sand is off of the Madison streets & paths. I'm pretty serious about getting back into playing shape.

Does anybody have a good "getting started" routine? I Googled, but didn't find anything consistent.

Any suggestions on starting up? (Every day? 30 minutes? 60 minutes?)

Thanks!

You know, I don't know how overweight you are, but you don't really have to start with food that you never would have eaten before. Maybe I'm talking out of turn here (and please tell me if I am), but I've been "dieting" since New Years, and lost 37 lbs. just cutting down on the stuff I already eat. Just limit yourself to a set caloric intake. I never paid attention before, but now do 2000 calories a day, plus make sure I eat breakfast (I never ate breakfast before), something like a bowl of cerial. And when I eat cerial, I eat the recomended 3/4 cup of cheerioes. Not a huge bowl and then go back for seconds.

Now, as to the stuff I already eat, here's an example: I like crappy frozen burritoes. I get these small ones that come in a family package (8 to a box). They are 300 calories each. I used to eat four of them for a typical lunch. Yeah, I know. Now, I only eat two, and typically can't even finish those. Another example: I still like to go out to fast food places. However, I'll get a six inch sub from Subway instead of a footlong, and it will be on wheat instead of white. Plus, I switched to diet soda/pop. Huge caloric savings right there...

Like I said, just doing this, and being sure to track my calories so that I knew I wasn't cheating, I've lost 37 lbs (going from 317 to 280) since January 2nd. Yes, it was hard at the beginning, and every now and then, I'll want something that I know I shouldn't have, but I can't tell you how good it feels (my wife has also lost a similar amount of weight) to see each other put on clothes and laugh at how baggy the stuff is. I know that it will take a life long committment to stick with this, and I also know that I need to start more physical activities to keep the weight off (my weight loss to this point has been entirely dietary change). That, however, is phase two. Right now, I'm enjoying the fruits of my labor.

Not talking out of turn at all. I switched my intake to where I stopped eating greaseball burgers from McD's or Wendy's, stopped eating white bread (love me the 12 grain bread), and am just eating more fiber...

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I've discovered that you can get a really good workout doing aerobics in the water, even in a class filled with mostly "silver sneakers" club members.

The major problem is that everyone else in the class is 15-40 years older than me (one guy just had his 85th birthday), and the women in the class like to have ladies' aid coffee chat during the class rather than actually working out (especially the ones that hang out in the deep end--you know, I thought these people would be well past the sneaky-teenager-trying-to-get-out-of-gym stage). The ones in the shallow end are chatty, but at least they're doing the workout. I do my workout in the middle of the pool, right before the deep-end dropoff, and I use the foam dumbbells to help with getting resistance in the water. It really works my arms that way. Otherwise it's all cardio. It is certainly less boring than the treadmills or ellipticals.

My diet got altered completely by accident--I had some kind of gastrointestinal bug last week. It basically made me not hungry for three days, at least not for what I had in the house. My appetite is back, but I'm craving lots of protein and veggies/fruits now (pummelos!), and now that it is spring, I'm craving carbs less.

In my case I did need to switch some of the foods I eat, because I wanted to exercise in addition to the eating more often per day. I am used to eating once per day, which of course causes me to store food and keep some extra weight.

I can't have Pizza, hamburger, and cokes 4-6 times a day and expect to be healthy. :) Nor will those kind of calories help me have energy for exercise.

I'm probably only 20 lbs overweight. So now is the time to change before it becomes worse and much more difficult to fix.

The hardest workout is the first one. Thankfully, biking is second nature for you, but getting out there... If your weather has turned like it has here in SE MI, you should be ok with a outdoor ride. Mrs. Alfa has a slightly injured foot, so she can't do running miles- and she did 15 biking miles on Sunday! Pretty sweet.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Trying to get back into shape for the summer, so I figured I'd start the Insanity program, since my clubhouse gym is awful, and I don't have any dumbbells or anything for apartment use.

I did the Fit Test today and it was literally, insane. I'm the kind of guy that usually lifts until I get sick, and have done some pretty good cardio training before, but I was completely spent after just doing the 30-40 minutes of plyometrics. I haven't been that exhausted since doing two-a-days for hockey and soccer. I have a big build and a good amount of muscle mass, so hopefully I can drop about 20 pounds and get to 225lbs by June.

The only bad thing is the "jumping". I'm in an upper level apartment, so I tried a lot of soft landings to cushion the noise that I'd create. Honestly, I probably will just say screw it, because I swear the kids below me are practicing WWF moves when they get home from school.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

So since I know some of you are triathletes, I figure this is a good place to ask.

As a beginner, what sort of gear should I get? I don't have a road bike, I'm going to use my mountain bike for the race. But should I get a tri-suit, shoes, etc? Or is it better just to figure out if I'm going to enjoy it first?

If your mountain bike has knobby tires, I would suggest switching to more of a road type tire.

don't get anything too fancy for your first one. A Tyr or Speedo suit for the swim, some cycling shorts and a cycling jersey for the ride, and regular running gear will get you through your first one no problem. Look into upgrading your equipment after you get your first one under your belt.

If you have other questions about it, shoot me an e-mail. I'll help you out. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Our office building is having a weight loss challenge.

As a reminder, registration for the Weight Loss Challenge is on Wednesday, March 10th, from 3:30 to 6:30 pm in the 11th floor conference room at [Office Building]. No appointments are necessary; just walk in at your leisure.

Please remember that this is not strictly a weight loss program. It is also about nutrition and good health overall. Brian and his assistant will offer personal coaching, group support, a free body analysis, and many suggestions for ways for you to “gain and maintain your health”.

Cost for the 12-week program is $29.00. Registration money will be paid out in cash and prizes to winners of the challenge.

It actually looks solid. I need some sort of help. I know what do to and how to do it, I just lack motivation. Taking their money might just do it. :)

If you don't have bike shorts already you can get tri-specific bike shorts and wear them in lieu of a swimsuit. Although I think you are female so you would need some sort of appropriate top also. You can always just go with a normal one-piece swimsuit (speedo makes good ones) and then throw on bike shorts and a t-shirt afterwards. Elastic shoelaces like yankz (http://www.yankz.com/) make your transitions faster if you care about that sort of thing. Biking will go a lot faster on a road bike, and faster still with clip-on shoes on the bike, but wait until you find out if you are serious before you invest in those things I guess.
