Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

yeah, I hate to sound like a broken record, but you need to get this checked out. Do it. Now.
Ditto. I had a friend hurt himself in a manner that sounds similar to what you described during a pickup game we were playing a few years ago, and it turned out to be worse than he thought it was. Get it checked out, joints shouldn't be messed around with.

volume day on the shoulders... well, at least I don't have to use my shoulders to walk :p

120x3x8... I anticipate soreness.

Watched my coach participate in a weightlifting meet... got some peer pressure to compete in the future... I don't know about you... but I don't think God wants to see me in a glorified speedo.

well, tomorrow I'm back in the weightroom and this week will begin to bounce back. We're gonna do another tri on the 19th of September, just as kind of a close to the season. Going into it with really nothing to lose is going to be a good feeling. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

So I need a little advice, after having a leg injury, I'm finally back to where I can really push myself exercise wise. What is a good running schedule? I'd like to get up to the point that I could do a 10k easily (About 2 years ago I could do this, but general laziness then my leg injury has caused me to get out of shape). Is something like running 4 days, 1 day off ok or 5 on 1 off, etc?

I'd run every other day at first, then adjust your training as you feel led. Just remember to add miles slowly, lest you end up right back where you started.

Speaking of training, I'm hoping to be at 16-18 miles by my birthday (9/20), but given all the setbacks I've had this year, if I can get to 15, I'll be fine.

Add miles slowly as in a mile at a time, or half mile at a time?

Did actually get my ankle checked out. The doctor took one look at the bruising and seemed pretty convinced it was broken, but the x-rays were clean. She diagnosed a sprain, gave me an air cast and some motrin, and told me to stay off of it.

This is why I hate doctors. I could have told myself that.

I still say better safe than sorry. I'm glad it's not a break, but when you are training as much as you are, you do need to know.

Yikes. Glad to hear it isn't broken, though!

I had some strange foot pain after my long run last week. It was really aggravated by all the up and down stairs while moving, too. It's getting better, but I was really freaked out reading alfa's posts. I'm resting it until Thursday and then trying something short to see where it's at. 2 1/2 weeks to go until my big day!

good luck man, I'm rooting for you dude.

So official time in my Olympic tri was 3:36:21. I need to improve on the bike dramatically. There is no question where I need improvement.

You could have guessed that, but you couldn't have been certain. :p

Trying to decide between shooting for a half ironman next year, or attempting bike racing. I'm kind of worried I don't really have enough base for either one. Never really tried biking at "race speed" for more than 25ish miles, and never ran more than 7. Still leaning towards half-iron though.

we're going for the half-iron next year; think you should try it too. We've been checking the training plans and it's really not too much different from the Olympic. I think you'll be just fine. Hell, with you pushing us and vice-versa, think we'll be in great shape

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

My 2 cents for biking is buy a trainer and try to spend 3 quality sessions a week during the offseason. These don't have to be long workouts but they should be hard workouts (hard intervals). I've done this the last 2 off seasons and it's helped a ton.

Good for you on taking a swing at half iron. I have a feeling once this IM is behind me that will end up being my favorite race distance. It's long enough to be a challenge and purt a good hurting on you but no so long that it takes weeks to recover from.
