Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

I just did my last "new distance" long run of my half marathon training! 12 miles!! :)
Now I'm in the "tapering" phase, so to speak. 3 weeks is kind of a long taper for a half, I realize, but it's how it worked out with me wanting to do my 12miler before I moved to Houghton. Next week, a 10, then an 8, then a some 3's and 4's going in to race weekend!

AWESOME- Way to go, 'diva!

Better yet is the smile on your note. You made it happily!

Remeber that tapering means less miles, but not always slower miles. Make them count.

I'm probably going to start running again on Sunday- tomorrow, I'll bike the entire running course to encourage my fellow 501ers. That and the ride to and from should give me somewhere near 25 miles, I think.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Anyone have a recomendation for running shoes? I know that the typical response is, "go out and try a bunch on," but here's my problem - I wear a size 15. Even in a big city, the selection ends up lacking, and I'm in a town where there are no shoe stores that carry my size.

As far as my experience, I haven't bought "running" shoes in years. In fact, I remember my Mom telling me we couldn't buy them anymore since I would stop my bike with them and the toe would peal back :D I typically wear basketball shoes when I wear gym shoes. I used to be a Reebok fan, but now own two pairs of Nike basketball shoes that I got at Nordstrom Rack (which is a fantastic place for large size shoes, BTW. They even hold "large sized shoe events" for men's 14-16 and women's 10 1/2-13 every couple months).

Thanks everyone!

I am not sure what/if any stores sell them but I have always heard that Brooks Shoes were the best, while also being ridiculously expensive. If you ever see Deutche Gopher Fan on here (usually in the Twins thread) ask her about them it is all she wears.

There is a running store on 28th and Hennepin in Uptown you could try.

I am almost done with week 4 (recovery week) of P90x and I am loving it. Weight loss has not been forthcoming (not surprising with the amount of weight work being done) but I have improved on every exercise everytime we do it which kicks ***! Even Yoga is a lot easier now and I really look forward to it.

Like I have said I doubt I will ever have a ridiculous body like the people on the videos, but I can tell I am in better shape already and I feel better everyday. Normally right about now I am dreading everyday of workouts but I really love the rotation of things so I don't get bored.

Still not running yet, for me- so I did 30 miles of biking, and helped my running group with the watering stations. I'm waiting until the MRI results that I got on Thursday before running again. So at least one more day of biking- I'll see if I can do 20 miles or so tomorrow.

Ran the Hey Radio 5K today. Despite finishing last in my age group, I finished in 33:42, more than two minutes less than my Coast Guard time. I'm getting back to where I was last year, and I should be marathon-ready by the end of September.

I love my yoga class. I have never felt so refreshed and calm. The second session starts this Wednesday. I just love it! It helps me with the ups and downs of everyday life and makes me physically feel better.

Down to 253 since last weigh in. I been biking and swimming a lot. Plus I do Wii when it rains. (which has been a lot in Upstate NY.)

My fiance has hit a wall. She's doing the same routine, but getting only 1-2 pounds per week. Any tips for her.

1-2 pounds/week is probably a sensible, and sustainable weight loss. If she's hit a wall, she may want to adjust her routine to increase her calorie burn and/or try to shed a few extra calories from her diet. I dropped a quick 10-12 lbs within a few weeks, have been content to take 1-3 lbs a week going into the fall.

I increased my emphasis on cardio/aerobic exercise which seemed to help. At least until the figured out the cartilage in my ankle is shredded. I guess too many years of hockey, rugby and parachuting finally took their toll. :o

Ugh....

The dr office is calling it a "stress reactions"- which means that it's not a stress fracture, but pretty darned close to it.

The bad news is no running for 4 weeks. :( (the "good" news- at least it's not 3 months.... :o )

So I get to ride and ride and ride, and maybe swim.

I'll be ok for our vacation in September, but it will be a major stretch to run the half marathon in Italy 4 weeks from now. That's a major bummer, since it is run on the Monza race track. I may walk it. At least one whole lap. I paid, it was cheap, and no harm in walking that far with running shoes. Besides, I should be back to running short distances by then.

Oh, well.

All things considered, I'm much rather be injured and in pretty good shape than a couch potato who does nothing. It's not too painful, at least anymore.

:( that sucks, Alfa.

In a similar boat, but less bad, I guess - sprained my ankle pretty badly (I think - no doctor has confirmed it, but I went into the boards with it pinned under me and felt something pop - it's about the size of a softball and purple) on Saturday playing hockey. I've got tryouts in two weeks, a triathlon in 4 weeks, and another hockey tournament in 5 weeks. Not to mention the fact that I HATE missing this much CrossFit, and I already missed a week last week because I was on vacation.

If you felt a "pop", I would recommend you get it checked out ASAP. I felt a pop when I "sprained" my knee, only to find out my ACL was torn.

I think I need to, but I JUST got back from vacation and think my boss would kill me. Also, I can put all of my weight on it, and I think it would be a lot more painful than it is if I tore something. But I guess I could be wrong there.

Never underestimate an ortho injury. I walked around for about 10 days with my bad knee with no real problems, beyond that **** "sprain", before they did the MRI and delivered the news. Ankles and feet are pretty complex instruments, and they may hide some injuries pretty well. If you're serious about competing in future you'd probably do yourself a favor having someone take a look at it "just in case". ;)

yeah, I hate to sound like a broken record, but you need to get this checked out. Do it. Now.

+ another for a quick checkup. See if you can find an appointment outside of work time- many health centers will allow it. And make sure they know how bad it is, so that they can get an x-ray right away.

Here's how I can relate- based on how I felt, I could have sworn what I had was mild panar faciitis, in my fore foot. But a few days of odd pain made me keep my MRI appointment. And thankfully, I did. The MRI happened after work- 6pm on a Thursday. So those appointments exist.

I, too, can put all my weight on it, and there are standing positions where I can't even feel it. But it's " close to a fracture. Which is good to know.
