Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Mike Ilitch has died. He was 87.

Look out, guys. Here we go...

Hammer

Wonder what the estate tax valuation will be on the Tigers (and the Red Wings)? Some CPA firm is going to rake in a nice fee for that return!

And once that's in, the For Sale signs on both Comerica and Little Caesars will go up.

The only one we have to deal with right now is the Tigers. The rest of it can pass through to Mrs I. Since she owns Motor City Casino, she is ineligible to own the Tigers. Either way, the valuation will not be pretty, for estate tax purposes. The estate tax bill from the Tigers alone could very easily be north of $500 mil.

It would not surprise me to see the Tigers sold by the All Star break. The Ilitch family will not own this team much longer.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Does Gilbert come in and buy the Tigers? He could have MLS, NBA, and MLB teams. Of course, then we're subjected to Rocket Mortgage commercials for all eternity.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

First, RIP to Mr. Ilitch. I'll always be grateful for him making the Tigers relevant again(on top of everything he did for hockey at multiple levels) and he actually seemed like a decent guy.

Second, it's not like this was unexpected. There were rumors about a month ago that Tom Gores was in line to buy the team, so I would expect that process is already well underway.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

So, how long can the Tigers run with a 4 man rotation this season?

Potential 5th starters through ST

Mike Pelfrey: 3 games, 6 IP, 12 H, 8 ER, 3 BB, 2K
Anibel Sanchez: 2 games, 2.2 IP, 7 ER, 9 H, 3 BB, 2 K (not counting today’s start where he 3 IP, allowing 4 R on 6 hits including 2 HRs)
Matt Boyd: 2 games, 3.2 IP, 4 ER, 8 H, 0 BB, 3 K

Pelf was born to be a fifth starter. He'll eat innings, too, you'll get a minimum of 6 out of him every start.

Had him last year. The minimum of 6 also referred to runs given up in each start.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

I'll roll the dice with Boyd, tyvm.

I suspect that either Sanchez or Pelfrey is getting released before we go north, but not both.

And we still don't have a CF.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Finally got to see a game at Joker Marchant Tuesday. Great venue, perfect weather... but somehow, the way the Phillies AA team lit up every pitcher that came close to the strike zone put a damper on the day. I think Bryan Holaday homered twice. Machado was making great contact but couldn't make it to the warning track... Romine played well...

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Did anyone in the organization ever offer any kind of excuse for hiring "Mike Pelfrey" to be a baseball pitcher? I don't understand it. It would be like electing "The Donald" Trump to run the whole country.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Point of clarification: Verlander will start Game 1. Fulmer will start the HOME opener later that week.

It's almost here...

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Mark Lowe has been released.

Also, Anthony Gose will try to make it as a pitcher now.

If I had to guess, Pelfrey and Sanchez both go north with the team, with Boyd getting the trip to Toledo. In other words, same ****, different year.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

I was in lakeland the last week or so. I saw several home and away games. I liked a few things but Lowe was bad and needed to go.
Bow has been fantastic, so has Sanchez, since he changed his delivery. I question if Zimmermann will get into the rotation.
As far as the changes, public park, is nice but it loses the feel of the old spring training parks and is more a money grab a la the yankees, braves, etc. We went to a game in Orlando and I hated the braves park.
Dunedin is much more what I think of as a spring training venue.

Hitting wise, we have issues. JD is hurt, Miggy also, the center field position remains wide open and no one wants the job, though I give collins the inside track. Nick is tearing the cover off the ball, anyone who has him on their fantasy team will do well. Navarro played a lot of first base and he was ok, but he can't hit. Presley was descent. I understand they might either 1 move Kinsler, or 2 Machado. They can't keep both of them and Machado is out of options. Stay tuned.
