Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

I just got back from lakeland and a few thoughts. It was brutally hot there. A guy had a heart attack in the first inning right in front of me.

otherwise had fun, and got sunburned

Welp, I matched you on the sunburn part when I went a couple weeks back, that's for sure.

That's terrible about the heart attack. All I had in front of me was a cute little 2 yr old Blue Jays fan running up and down the berm.

Verlander and Rondon both go to the DL to start the season.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

So...spring training is done, and we get going for real in just under 39 hours. The roster is set for now, but we've got some real concerns this year, a few more than what we're used to.

1) The veterans in the bullpen have not been good in Florida. Nathan is throwing 90 on a good day, Chamberlain has gotten bombed, and Gorzelanny has not exactly given me a warm and fuzzy feeling. The young arms are nice, but it wouldn't surprise me if 2 of the above 3 are not on this roster at the end of the year

2) We have nothing on the bench. Our bench is McCann, Perez, Romine and our 4th outfielder (at the moment, Rajai Davis). There is no punch whatsoever there.

3) The back end of the rotation is thin. Greene may be okay, but Simon concerns me, given his history in the AL and the fact that he fell off the face of the earth in the 2nd half of last year.

4) The bottom third of our lineup, plus Gose. What are we going to get out of Castellanos-Avila-Iglesias after Cespedes comes to the plate? Can Gose (and Iglesias, for that matter) hit better than .230 to justify a spot in the everyday lineup?

5) Depth-wise, this team is much thinner than we've appeared in recent years. 2-6 in the order are pretty darn good, but once we get past that, oof.

I think this is the last year of our window. It's 2015 or bust, I'm afraid.

Well Gose should be ok, and davis was hitting the ball pretty well this spring, but I totally agree on the bull pen, those guys are not going to last until july, let alone the end of the year. i'd be totally surprised if nathan is the closer at the end of April. But I think sorta will be, and he's a lot better than last year.

otherwise agree 100%

Because I don't think I can smuggle a radio to work tomorrow, I'll miss the game.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Tigers didn't have much success in their last opening series with the Twins as i recall. We shall see today if that continues.

Hughes missing badly over the center of the plate. Might be a short day for him.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Well, that'll draw a column from Lynn Henning soon.

4-0 final.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Didn't notice until now Nathan got the save for throwing the ball like three times.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Yup. He came in with the potential tying run on deck, retired the side in a game won by his club, and he was not the winning pitcher. Therefore, a save.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

I hear the Twins are going to attempt to employ a new tactic in todays game. Trying to score a run.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Looks like Gose had a big 2-run triple. This could be a fun team, with guys that can run.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Martinez IBB'd for the second time today.

Kinda funny sequence. He started his whole routine for when he gets in the box, then I think the catcher said something because he looked back, stopped, and just stood up.
