It's bittersweet. You won't find a manager that cared more for his players, fans and town. But those archaic, baffling decisions of his drove us crazy. He just couldn't get us over the top, but we certainly appreciate his efforts in getting the team there.

Wish him the best.

I'm pretty sad to see The Skipper go. I know there was a major difference in talent level on the field, but he played a huge role in making baseball in Detroit fun and relevant again. If anyone thinks the next manager isn't going to make some decisions that look bad in hindsight, they're probably going to be pretty disappointed.

I guess we can add who the next manager will be to the offseason discussion. Managing the Tigers is Clint Hurdle's dream job. Not sure if they could pry him away from Pittsburgh though.

I'd occasionally spit napalm over an in-game move he made, and sometimes over a lineup, and almost daily scratch my head over something he said or did, but we're a nit-picky punch and want a WSC. I think this is going to be day a majority of Tiger fans may regret.

I think there's one guy who most deserves the finger-pointing, and that's $24M/yr guy we saw falling over himself getting back to third on Saturday. Sure, Leyland stuck up for him. But what do you want there, Bobby Valentine?

I can't believe Jim just told a joke about farting in church.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Mayo Smith, Sparky Anderson, & Jim Leyland, those are the Tigers' managers I'll remember.

I had been kind of ignoring MLB and the Tigers through the 90s and early 00s, and of course the Tigers weren't much to watch during those years. Leyland and the teams he had revitalized my interest in the Tigers and gave all of us quite a ride for eight seasons. Sure, he never brought home a WS, but the success he and the teams had over the past eight seasons was good enough for me!

Good on you Jim Leyland. All the best in the future. Nice to know you'll continue on with the Tigers.

See, he was only able to entertain reporters off-the-record/off-mic with those the last 8 years. Paws would not have approved! Now he's free to do that stuff on MLB or Baseball Tonight.

Kirk Gibson, Alan Trammel, Dusty Baker to name a few?

I'd do anything possible to buy out Gibby's contract and bring him home. 2011 NL Manager of the Year, great success there, well respected by players and well known for performance under pressure... still a Michigan guy, spends a lot of time here.

Smoke free studios.

Tough to say if Gibby would be exactly what the organization needs or if he would be a complete disaster. His fiery, get-in-a-players-face style works great with a young, unheralded team like AZ was a couple years ago. Is that going to work with a very established, veteran group like the Tigers have, or do they just tune him out?

I wouldn't touch Dusty Baker with a ten-foot clown pole. Tram doesn't do much for me one way or the other. He's coached some terrible teams to some terrible records. Not much to judge him by.

Not sure when the Tigers will announce Jim Leyland's successor, but we should probably look for a puff of white smoke.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Gonna be tough to find someone who can perform as well as Leyland has in his managerial career. Building winners in PIT, FLA, and DET.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

My guess is that Gibby and Trammell are non-starters. After what they went through in 2003-2005, they'd both be well-justified to tell this organization to go **** themselves.

I've never been a fan of Dusty Baker. Not happy with how he treats young arms especially.

I'm under the impression that the next manager will be here for a short term, likely 2-3 years. If we're only talking that window, here's a name: Charlie Manuel. Yes, he's 68, but he's said that he wants to manage again.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

The more I think about it, Charlie Manuel seems like the most obvious choice.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Again, I don't want him for 5 years from now. This would be a short term from him. Hopefully 3 years and a parade down Woodward somewhere in there.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Eric Wedge's name keeps popping up as a candidate. Right now I don't realy care who. Just get someone in and hope there are not wholesale changes made to this team. Obviously bullpen strength and a little speed are needed. I think the hardest decision is what to do with Peralta. I don't like him as a regular in LF. Can he possibly play 2nd?

One other thought. Any chance they try to trade Fielder? Moving Miggy to 1st probably keeps him more healthy in the long run. Maybe Peralta can play 3rd. It would free up some money to get a left handed bat with some speed to play outfield. I think Castellanos probably a year away from being a starter so LF could be up for grabs.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Eric Wedge had a stroke a couple months ago. Don't want that. Jim Tracy could be a name worth considering, too.
