Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Hammer

We'll be back.
:D

To recap, streaker and I came to an agreement this offseason that if the Tigers reach 70 wins in the 2010 regular season, he will be kind enough to provide me a pitcher of beer of my choice after the season, in a venue yet to be determined. If the Tigers come in with 69 wins or fewer, I will be kind enough to return the favor in the same manner described above.

:D

Kill the 2009 thread. I'm going to Florida a week from Sunday, so this might be the last chance to get this started properly.

Pitchers and catchers report later this week. Friday, I think. We've got holes to fill. If I had to guess, Johnny Damon is going to be a Tiger by the end of the week. I guess that kinda-sorta settles who will be in the outfield, but we've got issues at 2B as well as on the back half of the rotation. If Bonderman cannot lock down the #4 spot (which is certainly not a given), we've got problems there, too.

On the positive side, Verlander is locked up long term, Porcello is going to be here for a bit, and Scherzer is all but penciled in as the #3 as a replacement for Edwin Jackson. Jose Valverde is expected to close, assuming we can find our way into the 9th inning with something that resembles a lead. I expect Alex Avila to find his way into the lineup on a regular basis in the 2nd half of the season, and Miguel Cabrera should continue hitting high balls into the stands instead of pouring highballs down his throat.

That's all I got for now. Let spring training begin.

Good luck to you both in your pursuit of beer. :)

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Oh, make no mistake. We're getting beer. It's just a matter of who is going to reach into their wallet and pay for the beer.

NTTIAWWT.

Cheers my friend and good luck to the Tigers. 69-93 or bust. :D

Edit; Here's what Lynn Henning has to say:

http://www.detnews.com/article/2010...nse--Tigers-will-be-challenged-to-finish-.500

"A reasonable view today, based on the way the current roster shakes out, is they might win 80 games, with 75 being more realistic."

From this morning's Detroit News:

Outfield prospect Casper Wells reported, "There's a nine-foot alligator in the lake where I'm staying."

Three words for you: Ain't. No. Way.

Great. Our backup plan in CF is about to end up in some lizard's belly.

I'd like to see us sign Dye if we don't land Damon. Hopefully an annoucement will be made soon. A buddy of mine at my office lives next door to Paul Konerko in North Scottsdale. They play poker on Thursday's and he said Damon played golf out here with a few guys from the Whitesox on Wednesday. He seemed to think it was a done deal that he's signing with the Whitesox. Grrrr:mad:

Sounds like the White Sox pulled their offer for Damon off of the table:

Who really knows what's going on with this??

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

If it ends up in a fashion where the Tigers *don't* pay Damon, I'm all for it. If the guy sucked in Yankee Stadium, he'll blow at Comerica.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

....and now the WXYT in Detroit is reporting that the Tigers have given Boras/Damon until Sunday to make his decision.

I'm predicting that he will end up with the Braves. I hope we get Dye!

Fail. :p

He has a .344 career batting average at Comerica and has said numerous times, its his favorite park to hit in.

That's great. We're signing him to play in the outfield, not DH. He's got a limp noodle of an arm and getting slow in his old age.

I don't think the Tigers can make the opposition use Robertson or Bonderman as their pitcher when Damon comes to the plate.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Well its confirmed, he's a Tiger.

It looks like he's going to share time in Left with Guillen and share time at DH.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

this is a good thing, right guys? ......................... guys?

I'll be stuck here in Gainesville for a week. I feel like I'm about two hours too far north.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

I read today on one of the sites that the AL Central is projected for the a 3-way tie for first at 80-82 between Tigers, Twins and White Sox.

I personally don't see how the division winner will have less than 90 wins with all the talent the Central has.

I think so... no doubt. First, he is signed for one yr... and we gave up nothing to get him. 24 HRs in 10? Doubt it, but he could well get 17-20. Speed? Still good for near 20 SBs. Leadership?? Hell yes! Dude has two WS rings and knows how to win. He is a leader on the field and plays the game hard. What's not to like? Yeah, his arm is weak... so what? What he gives you offensively more than outweighs his defensive liabilities.

Did you really want to go into this season with two rookies batting 1, 2? Please. Plug in Damon at lead-off hitter (.365 OBP last yr). For comparison's sake, look at Granderson's OBP (.327 last yr). That is a serious upgrade in that department. Guys need to be on base for the 3-4-5 hitters. How many solo HRs did we hit last yr?? A ton. Hopefully, that won't happen this year with Damon, Jackson, and Sizemore on base. Likely either Jackson or Sizemore move into the #8 or #9 spot in the order (based on their Spring Training results).

80-82 wins for all three?? I don't even think that is possible.... playing 18 games apiece vs each other (+ KC and CLE).... at least two of those teams will be 88-93 wins. Doubt it is Detroit, but we shall see.

Minnesota and Detroit had 86 and Chicago had 79 last year. Give Chicago a couple more wins vs the other two and you're looking at 84/84/83

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Tigers were forced to sign Damon because they had no lead off hitter, and now still have a rookie in CF and at 2b. The Granderson deal is hinging on how well the arms they traded for with AZ do, really. Jackson in CF better play as well defensively as Grandy and better be able to steal some bases, too.

The Damon signing just earned them a few more wins with his bat, and one year is a good risk. Realistically, the Tigers should win 76 games now, although I still contend that they could fail. The Twins are going to run away and hide if they get any kind of pitching.
