Detroit Tigers, 2009, Part III: How long does it take for Leyland to screw this up?

Another call goes St. Joe's way .

What is the rule on that?

The ball clearly hit the fan first, and then the ball juggled around into Joe's glove. Did it hit the netting? On one of the replays it looked like it did, on the other it didn't.

Are you seriously hating on Joe Mauer?

There is plenty of players worth disliking in baseball, i don't think anyone would say he is one of them.

Don't get me wrong, I like Mauer and think he's a great player. But he probably should have struck out looking 20 times against the Tigers this year, and I think like four have actually been called. His reputation cuts his strike zone by about half.

I was at my parents' house watching this game. For once the theatrics in the 9th were not the fault of Rodney. Polanco had a better-than-average chance at making the first out of the inning, and Granderson's Curt Flood impersonation didn't help matters, either. Fernando basically had to get 5 outs in the 9th.

I'd expect this thread to be bi-polar for the rest of the regular season. I wouldn't expect anything less. We're going to have moments over the next 5 days where we're going to be ready to kiss Jim Leyland square on the lips (okay, maybe not me) one minute and want to burn down Comerica Park the next. It's a pennant race, dammit. Let it hang out. I'm certainly going to.

BTW, that was a poor call on the foul out that Mauer caught, unless there's something in the rule book that I'm missing.

Wow, what a baby.

You know, there is a thread where you can jerkoff to your own beat.

Congrats to the Tigers on the win this evening. I'm glad the Twins came back and made it a game, but Detroit was able to do what they weren't able to do in the first game (getting hits with 2 out and runners on).

Very fun, frustrating games for both teams I would imagine. I'm looking forward to tomorrow night.

We got Bonine and Robertson going back-to-back. No one's going to have any nails (or nerves) left after this series.

I think the most serious problem I have is I'm running low on Oberon and the local Meijer doesn't have any in stock.

True dat, especially since the Twins aren't exactly sending Spahn & Sain to the mound. ;)

Don't know if it means anything, but Baseball Tonight declared that the Twins have the pitching advantage for the next two games. Pavano owns the Tigers, and Bonine and Robertson don't exactly strike fear into any lineup. I'm sure Leyland didn't imagine these options after visions of Washburn, Willis, Bonderman and Galarraga contributing to the rotation. I don't know if we miss Zumaya, either in relief. I guess he's better than Fien.

Of course, the Twins also are missing Bonser, Slowey and Meshek from their staff, too.

And yet both have had excellent outings in the past few weeks. It's only slightly more random than, say, Jackson has been for the last month.

Nate was good in Minnesota when we needed it. Bonine was good in his last two starts, including a hard luck loss last outing that you can put squarely on the offense (and Brandon Inge for the error allowing the extra at bat which resulted in a GW homer.)

Jackson has been abysmal, doing his best Willis imitation. Yet, this team still will win 90 games if they win the remaining five.

If i managed Minn. I'd hold Pavano off until tomorrow. They're not going to need him tonight. Twins will score 10 runs tonight. Granderson pulls his Curt Flood Impression,.....AGAIN!!!

Granderson is normally solid in the field right?

He's playing this like its Metrodome East.

Last night and tonight are the only times I remember Curtis misplaying an easy fly ball.

Why do the Tigers only advance one base after a base hit, while the Twins advance 2 bases?
