I'm sure it was a principled stand p ) but the point I was making is it's bad politics, because the Dems now have a simplistic narrative with bite and they'll run with it. It's the equivalent of the GOP getting to rant about the Dems "voting against the troops" when the issue was about procedure and funding.
Both parties do this, so it's difficult to feel sorry for either of them.
You forgot to tell the rest of the story. i.e. That the Reps wanted to pay for the cost of extending unemployment benefits with unspent money from last year's stimulus program. The Dems didn't like that idea because it would mean cutting out too much pork. So we have the Dems trying to make the Reps out to be meanies because the benefits extension hasn't been passed, when in reality the Reps are willing to go along with it as long as it is payed for up front (and even suggested a way of paying for it).
