Death to the Incumbent!! Your guide to the 2010 primaries

Re: Death to the Incumbent!! Your guide to the 2010 primaries

You forgot to tell the rest of the story. i.e. That the Reps wanted to pay for the cost of extending unemployment benefits with unspent money from last year's stimulus program. The Dems didn't like that idea because it would mean cutting out too much pork. So we have the Dems trying to make the Reps out to be meanies because the benefits extension hasn't been passed, when in reality the Reps are willing to go along with it as long as it is payed for up front (and even suggested a way of paying for it).

I'm sure it was a principled stand (:p ) but the point I was making is it's bad politics, because the Dems now have a simplistic narrative with bite and they'll run with it. It's the equivalent of the GOP getting to rant about the Dems "voting against the troops" when the issue was about procedure and funding.

Both parties do this, so it's difficult to feel sorry for either of them.

Re: Death to the Incumbent!! Your guide to the 2010 primaries

Sure there's politics going on. But the Reps offered up a very reasonable compromise to get the extension passed and the Dems balked.

Why do you hate America?

Or it could be that the Reps feel that there really is a growing desire among the general populace to cut out of control government spending, in which case it could turn out to be not so bad politics after all. I guess this Fall will tell us one way or the other. Certainly with the support of most of the main street media (which lean left), the Dems are using it to try and make the Reps look bad, and they're counting on most people not being diligent enough to find out the full story.

Re: Death to the Incumbent!! Your guide to the 2010 primaries

I have to snicker sometimes at how stupid political reporting has become. Its really the equivalent of sports reporting now. There's a breathless article today about how "in a sign how seriously Sen Boxer takes Carly Fiorina challenge, blah blah blah" - she's running a negative ad about Fiorina's time at HP. Ummm...duh, what exactly would you expect a political candidate to do if not exploit a rival's weakness - in this case laying off people and then getting fired for incompetence. I'd expect a candidate from either party to do something along these lines, as its called "campaigning". Either you want to win the race or you don't, and clearly the Martha Coakley method didn't work too well. ;)

Does anybody with a brain go into journalism anymore?

Same phenomenon: 24 hour news cycle delivered to us by the mentally impaired. It's not that there isn't 24 hours of actual political news that could be reported -- foreign affairs alone could fill it -- but just like ESPN, the cable news networks only follow stories that keep the Great Unwashed tuned in. You're not going to find a lot of history or economics, or even poli-sci, PhDs in a CNN newsroom. It's planet-wide but an inch deep. Wolf Blitzer is Stuart Scott.

"News" editors don't pay for brains anymore. Want someone smart? Read a book. If you want "news" read to you, they'll hire a beauty queen.

Re: Death to the Incumbent!! Your guide to the 2010 primaries

No, there are plenty of people with brains who go into journalism. 90% of the people who research and investigate for the Big Three (New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post) are very smart, know their subjects, do their research, and try their best to be unbiased. The celebrities on the Op Ed page, or infesting the TV, obviously aren't selected for experience or intelligence, so they give the industry a bad name.

I'm waiting for Harry Reid to come out and denounce these ads paid for by Big Pharma. According to the Dems these ads are the result of a poor Supreme Court ruling and should, in fact, be illegal.

Re: Death to the Incumbent!! Your guide to the 2010 primaries

Try making sense.

Simply pointing out that the Dems were up in arms about the ruling to the point where Obama called out the Court during the State of the Union. You'd think that Reid would have request the companies shut down their ads because of his moral objection. I mean a Dem would never a hyprocrite

How is Reid a hyprocrite? He'd have to be a world class top rated moron to unilaterally disarm during a US Senate campaign.

Double   back at you.

I think saying you're against special interest groups and then having them run ads for you might qualify.

I'm aware of Harry Reid being against the relevant Supreme Court case but I have never heard Reid say he opposes special interests. In fact he is in bed with a number of them.

Let's see your proof. Where's the quote.

The whole opposition of the ruling was because they feared the influence of special interests.

Also, he did kind of pledge to bring legislation forward that would severely restrict the very ads that are running for him.

Has that legislation been signed into law?

"So now Reid's supposed to obey a law that doesn't exist? What's next - imaginary street signs?"
