Don't think it was Mr. Saito. I'm talking about 50's or 60's. But anything vaguely "sumoish" has been used by more than one Asian guy ('course in those days they were "oriental.") There was even a clown who called himself Yokozuna. Yokozuna is the top rank of sumo and there have only been 70 of them in 400 years!

Found this on Mitsu Arakawa. As I said, after the bell rang he always started a phony baloney dohyo-iri ceremony. And it's interesting one of his favorite methods of cheating was throwing salt into the eyes of opponents. Tossing salt is part of the buildup to a sumo match, and symbolically purifies the ring.

Rest easy, Babe and Royal Canadian Army and D-Day veteran Cliff Chadderton, 94.

Cliff Chadderton, the man know as "Mr. Veteran" for more than 40 years of tireless work on behalf of veterans and amputees, has passed away at age 94.

The War Amps, of which Chadderton held the position of chief executive officer until 2009, announced his death on its website.

Chadderton, the Fort William, Ont., born and Winnipeg raised Second World War veteran, lost part of his leg while commanding a company of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He joined the War Amps when he returned from the war in 1944 and transformed it from a veterans` organization to an institution that represented all amputees, especially children.

Chadderton founded the Child Amputee (CHAMP) Programs which has helped thousands of child amputees with the cost of artificial limbs and education.

In John Toland's book on the Battle of the Bulge, he recounted a conversation between a captain being overrun by Tigers and a higher up waaaay behind the lines. The guy on the other end of the 'phone told him to calm down. And asked how many Tigers he was talking about. The guy said: "Colonel, I could p*ss out the window and hit at least six!"

Bastogne was hell on earth. And as we learned later, Joachim Peiper and company weren't in the business of adhering to the Geneva Conventions.

In 2006 Nelson Mandela said

Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope, where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination.

Whether it was the power of football to end a civil war in the Ivory Coast or a group of college kids on a sheet of ice in Lake Placid or Jesse Owens disproving the myth of the superior Aryan race right before Hitler's eyes or sports and other entertainment shining a spotlight on the system of Apartheid in his own South Africa we have seen time and time again how powerful sport can be. Nelson Mandela will be missed for many reasons, but his love of athletics and realization and acknowledgement of the power of sport is part of his legacy.

There are so few truly great men. Some near great. But few truly great. And one has passed from our midst. This kind of world event will be a protocol and security nightmare for the government of South Africa. Wonder if Winnie will demand a place at the funeral? I guess you can't hold kidnappings and murders (Stompie Moeketsi among others) against her forever.

Quoting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which held:

"Ms Winnie Madikizela Mandela politically and morally accountable for the gross violations of human rights", concluding that she had personally been responsible for the murder, torture, abduction and assault of numerous men, women and children, as well as indirectly responsible for even larger number of such crimes."

Nope. Thanks for the help. But it was Mitsu Arakawa. I posted a link to the guy. Way before you young guys.

To be fair, Mr. Moto is even older than Arakawa. I just screwed up since Moto was an NWA guy while Arakawa was in the AWA.

Well, back in the B&W days and the Dumont network, there was no such thing as the NWA or the AWA. There was the AFL/CIO instead. Anyway, it was Arakawa I was thinking of. And like all Japanese rasslers in those days, he was the bad guy. Sneaky, very sneaky. I wasn't until I got to Tokyo I realized that b.s. he tried after the bell rang (always after, always) was pseudo sumo sh*t.
