Dude, that was our playground in 1968. To my knowledge nobody was ever seriously hurt. OTOH everybody got very painfully but unseriously hurt with monotonous regularity, and that, well, taught us things.

And I'm not just talking about macho toughness idiocy. One thing we learned was that when somebody got hurt you dropped everything and helped, and were kind to them, and for that fifteen-thirty minutes you didn't think about yourself (which for a child is a miracle). I think we learned to be gentle more than we learned to be tough. Now people just learn to be nice, and that's a very, very different breed of cat.
