DEAD!! All right, who died now?

Re: DEAD!! All right, who died now?

IINM this is actually a problem. The King has theoretically limitless power and that was fine with this dude because he was ancient and everybody loved him, but his heir is a cross between Uday Hussein and Martin Shkreli.

What the hell?

His first name at birth was "Vajiralongkorn Borommachakkrayadisonsantatiwong Thewetthamrongsuboriban Aphikhunuprakanmahittaladunladet Phumiphonnaretwarangkun Kittisirisombunsawangkhawat Borommakhattiyaratchakuman"

Re: DEAD!! All right, who died now?

many of those are not used. have not been for centuries

Hmm. I knew they just redid their script (making it a lot less interesting but probably simpler.) I thought this was more a matter of daily language is stripped down, fancy-pants formal language is... well, fancy. Like turning a double s into another character but doing it a few dozen times.

In any case, it can't hold a candle to Tibetan, the letters of which look like cool martial arts weapons.

they have combined a number of alphabets. when you see them all there in those long arsed words they have no sound now.

Re: DEAD!! All right, who died now?

The Thai alphabet has 40+ consonants (not vowels) that represent a fewer set of sounds, yet 15 vowel 'symbols' that can be combined into several more forms. It is not an alphabet technically but a writing system with origins in the Khmer script, but unlike the Khmer it was the first to incorporate the use of tone markers. Also because many words were borrowed from Sanksrit they have duplicate letters (and it is a few of these that are no longer in use) and duplicate ways of spelling sounds as they often write phonetically. The kids have picked up most of it, I trail far behind. I'll sit in on her language lessons with them and she's demonstrated what to me sounds like the same word, but a well trained ear will pick up that in fact there are 3 or 4 distinct and separate words with very minute differences in pronunciation.

Does that make his nickname "Vaj"?

Re: DEAD!! All right, who died now?

I get to learn Hebrew. Should be a gas.

I've finally come around to properly pronouncing the transliteration, but I still don't know what most of it means. Reading the alphabet should be no sweat, right?

;)

Reading the alphabet is indeed no problem.
