Even if they're not a US citizen?

If you want to waste money tracking a billion Muslims from Indonesia and India because you're scared of brown people, you need to stop calling yourself a fiscal conservative.

Re: Days Since Last Mass Shooting: 0

Honest question: do you want to deal with the exception?

There is NO way we can stop EVERYTHING bad from happening, but if there is an abnormality, for lack of a better word, to begin with...I don't want to take that chance. Fair or not.

I get that. And having a severe mental illness does increase the risk for violent behavior to some degree. However I do get annoyed with the stigma of mental illness in this country. I think it is fair to say that when most people hear "schizophrenia" there is a lot of baggage that comes along. I am not trying to argue that violent acts are never done by people suffering from schizophrenia rather they are incredibly rare, especially with gun violence.

I think humans rely far too heavy on the exception.

Those that are drastically uncontrolled largely do not have the ability to organize or function enough to obtain a gun, let alone plan some sort of coordinated attack.

The only people I have been truly afraid of are the ones with clear cut antisocial personality disorder. That and a few very tragic long term courses from traumatic brain injuries come to mind.

I don't think I want a schizophrenic, violent or not, having access to a firearm.

1.6 billion.

Re: Days Since Last Mass Shooting: 0

Well, as mentioned earlier in the thread, I think in order to purchase a gun, one must pass a mental health check as one of the requirements.
Then how is it a problem of mental health if all these people are checked?

Re: Days Since Last Mass Shooting: 0

*facepalm*

No one is being checked NOW. Brent wants a mental health check to be required GOING FORWARD.

Regardless of what I may have thought of you in the past, I really hope you aren't actually this dense.

Re: Days Since Last Mass Shooting: 0

You just said you had to pass one to buy a gun. Now you're saying they don't get checked.... It's one or the other.

Thats a law he wants in put into place, mental health check before gun ownership.

Originally I read it wrong as him saying he believes that it's already in place.

Technically many states and any federally licensed firearms dealer require a background check but that only accounts for 40% of gun sales at most. Along with how narrowly mental health red flags are defined as well as states not submitting pertinent information makes this process next to worthless.

Mental health checks are still a red herring since most mass shooters have never sought treatment, never showed any signs of a disorder, and fit so many "normal" categories. There's really only one thing that is always present.

On another note, I don't give a **** what you think about me. Get ****ed if you think I worry about your exalted opinion.

Re: Days Since Last Mass Shooting: 0

That's the thing, though. They never sought treatment. If someone has to get a clean bill of mental health before purchasing a gun, then maybe they WOULD seek treatment, and "get better" for lack of a better phrase.

Some people don't realize they have issues, they just accept it as "life" and keep going on. Once they are diagnosed, they can and do improve with help.

Re: Days Since Last Mass Shooting: 0

The gun lobby will never allow it which is the problem. You're talking about the most rabid lobby on the planet and one with endless resources. Until the power of their dollar is taken away not a god**** thing is going to change.
