It pizzes me off that the Flyers organization is just trying to gain some hockey cred the easy way by buying this connection with the UND program. If the Gophers try something like this, I'll REALLY be pizzed.

The gophers don't typically hire Canadian coaches.

I want him to succeed. I like it when the NHL notices the NCAA hockey world, after all, it used to be incredibly rare for a college player to go on to the NHL, and now it's common. I don't like the fact that players leave early, but I like the fact that they have enough talent to succeed at the next level.

I agree with this.

If Hakstol succeeds, I don't think we'll suddenly see a big switch to college head coaches as the spot to look for your next NHL head coach. But I've always thought professional sports organizations are sheeple, as much as movie producers. Someone has some success with using Bill James' stats to build a baseball team, now everyone has to look at that method. Someone wins a Super Bowl with a coach who was formerly a coordinator, everyone has to hire a current coordinator.

The reason it was shocking a college coach was picked was because teams have always either named a retread from the NHL, or picked someone out of the AHL or maybe the junior leagues in Canada. If Hakstol has success, someone in the college ranks is going to get a shot, whether it's a Dave Quinn or a Mel Pearson or Jim Montgomery. But someone will get the shot, and as they get a chance, and as they succeed, the old ingrained school of thought that anything good in hockey has to come out of the junior leagues up there will continue to erode.

Great post but you forgot to mention Lucia as a possible NHL coach in the future. 😉

Not that I would want to see it happen, but they would have been better off with Yale's Allain who has the pro asst. coaching cred with the Caps. I know the money and prestige are a draw for Hakstol, but why go from being fawned over by UND fans to the that hellhole of a sports town that Philly is. The Flyers message boards are already in full rage about the hire.

I hate the Flyers. I don't like Hakstol. I will not be rooting for any success.

I promise you nobody cares what a sourpuss like you thinks about the situation... There are plenty of goofer fans that wish you wouldn't root for their team.
