I'm not the one making countless posts about other people's vanity. I am with you - I think they're stupid and vapid at the very least, but it's no skin off my back.

Oh and you're a tremendous slouch.

My interpretation was you said the last 30 years are something special -- the first time in human history we've been "really" studying it. If that's not what you meant then, sure, as you were. :)

I guess I meant the last 30 years we’ve started to study it.

But rereading your post, I suppose you have a point about norms changing. But I figured for the first time we have science backing up current norms. Maybe there isn’t an endpoint. But at least the next thirty years look brighter than the last 10,000.

Edit, of course, by “we” I mean people who don’t eat their shirts.

Science has very little to do with this, though. It's the old is/ought wall. Regardless of facts, human beings (writ large; not our minority that was grown in an academic test tube) are just going to keep on turning out meanings and norms. Science is GREAT for making predictions about physical systems so we can stick a satellite into orbit around Saturn. For how people assign values it means doodly-squat, because values are completely arbitrary. All men are equal (or not). Wait, I mean women, too (or not). Oh, and let's not reduce that to a dichotomy (or not). These are all things we collectively agree to believe, like rules of a sport. They change with the tides. Human values are informed by deep, deep churnings in the magma. Our rationalizations are fragile plates that float on the surface.

One of my brothers (no kids) bought the "DJ Duck" for our nephew, the youngest child of the brother just older than me. This toy would light up, twirl, and play a loud, obnoxious "music" for around 30 seconds. Our nephew loved it, and his parents hated it. As soon as the batteries went dead, the toy was "broken" and found its way to a landfill. I'm a little scared to see what comes my way. My brothers are creative in spreading parental misery.

My 22-month old loves that duck. He does the cutest dance and his face is pure joy. I would buy a truckload of batteries to keep him so happy.

My brother has always been far more concerned with what's easiest for himself than what's best for his kids. If the two happened to cross paths, all the better for everyone. And he was a young parent, not really mature enough for children, in my opinion. Or perhaps that's just my less than charitable take on his parenting methods.

I often asked for help from my parents when buying stuff for my nieces early on. My requirements? Can it be educational? Does it make a lot of noise? ;)

Now that they've long been past the baby/toddler stage, I got this. It was until about 5YO I had difficulty.

That said, game drives are stupid in forested areas and should only be done on the plains.
