Daniel Webster adding D-III varsity men's and women's hockey

Re: Daniel Webster adding D-III varsity men's and women's hockey

How about one or more of these colleges start a program? I believe they are all D-3.

Univ of Rochester
Hartwick
St John Fisher
Ithaca

Or Stevenson adding Men's Hockey? They already have a Women's team.

I think Stevenson would like to add men's hockey in a perfectly world but they are probably also very discouraged that their women's team has yet to find a conference to call home yet. This is now their second full season as a varsity program after the team was announced four years ago and had a whole year with two full-time coaches just recruiting.

Re: Daniel Webster adding D-III varsity men's and women's hockey

There are a couple other schools that could give the ECAC West the magic number 7.
First as far as I know, Canton is not is a league or I haven't heard it around campus. That would make sense since the women will be playing in the ECAC West anyway. There are already long bus rides from teams from Pennslyvania to Canton, ie Chatham. Second and this never made any sense to me is to have Hamilton, which was once part of the West, go back into the West and not be in the league they are in. They are very close to Utica, Hobart, Naz, and Elmira. Now I know none of this will happen since it makes to much sense.

Hamilton won't be leaving the NESCAC anytime soon. If you get into that high circle, you never leave on your own.

Re: Daniel Webster adding D-III varsity men's and women's hockey

In all likelihood, SOMEONE is going to have to give up their AQ to move to the ECAC-W if that league is to get an AQ of their own.

Re: Daniel Webster adding D-III varsity men's and women's hockey

My though is that Canton might join. SUNYAC already has 9 teams. They don't need a 10th.

Re: Daniel Webster adding D-III varsity men's and women's hockey

SUNYAC either needs to gain a 10th team or lose the 9th. Morrisville not having a travel partner sucks and while they could do away with that concept all together I don't know if I like that.

First, the SUNYAC hockey schools would love to have a 10th hockey team. Second, Canton is a SUNY school. What you think they need has nothing to do with it.

Whether Canton wants to go to the SUNYAC (either as a full member or affiliate member) or the SUNYAC as a whole is willing to accept another affiliate member (not a gimme at all) are the real questions.

Isn't there a by-law in the SUNYAC that doesn't allow an affiliate member to be eligible for the postseason for two years?

As you recall, the SUNYAC did have the opportunity to add a 10th team when Utica applied to be an affiliate for hockey, and it didn't fly. From what I have read, Canton definitely doesn't want to go the route that Morrisville went - joining as full SUNYAC members and getting crushed in all sports, and I seem to remember that they have had exploratory talks with a different multi-sport conference. I think it was either the North Eastern AC (which includes Morrisville and SUNYIT already) or the Allegheny Mountain CC, which includes a lot of schools that border on Lake Erie.

I realize it doesn't matter what I think they need. I'm just stating a gut feeling. I'm just not sure whether the SUNYAC wants them. If they joined SUNYAC, then that would tie up 18 of the 25 games within the conference. I'm really not basing anything on facts, just, again, stating a gut feeling (or wishful thinking because I want that 7th team).

Re: Daniel Webster adding D-III varsity men's and women's hockey

I just read an article from back then about it. If what that said is accurate i'd have to disagree with your statement.

Union was KICKED out of NESCAC. See Ned Harkness, recruiting violations, NESCAC rules.

Anything else you read is spinning...

You bring up a good point about tying up 18 games to conference play.

My not so gut feeling (from actually talking to coaches) is they would accept Canton without a problem. My not so gut feeling, however, is that Canton doesn't necessarily want to join the SUNYAC.

Utica is not a SUNY school, and that ultimately is what made the decision.

The rest of what you say is correct. And there is talk that the SUNYAC doesn't want to accept anymore affiliate members. They won't kick Morrisville out though, but not because of ice hockey. Field hockey needs them to maintain seven teams and the AQ.
