A friend has offerred a concise history of the early years of the NCAA and the DIII women's championship:
"The First D3 National Championship – sponsored by the AWHCA and sanctioned by the NCAA – was in 2000. Middlebury played Augsburg (2 games) at Northeastern University, along with the D1 women (they had a final four). The next year, there was a D3 Final Four in Rochester, NY. Gustavus Adolphus and St. Mary’s represented the west…….Middlebury and Williams were there from the east. Again, the tournament was sponsored by the AWHCA and sanctioned by the NCAA. The NCAA did not sponsor the tournament until 2002."
Please note that Middlebury defeated Augsburg 5-1 and 8-1 in '00 and defeated St. Mary's 3-1 and Gustavus Adolphus 6-0 in '01.

Hey forgive me if I'm covering ground that's already been discussed. Norwich was listed ahead of Bowdoin on the NCAA east ranking, so how does Norwich get in the Plattsburgh side of the bracket? Shouldn't Bowdoin play Platty and Norwich play GAC if form holds? 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3? The only thing I can come up with is they are listing GAC as the top seed.

Correction: Norwich was listed ahead of Bowdoin on the last NCAA east ranking prior to the ranking done the day of the seeding, which is never released.

Maybe they wanted to give GAC an easier path to the final.
besides, if any of these teams lose their next game those match-ups would not happen anyways. Willing to bet at least one of the "top 4" seeds loses in the next round.

The majority of the older posters DO know the letters for the western teams. I go back to when the West DII & DIII men included teams like Bemidgi and St Cloud(when Herb Brooks was coach).

It is very simple, Middlebury can not be made to travel very far from home or any where that might take a lot of time. I think it is an NCAA rule! Middlebury also should not have to play Bowdoin unless it is in the finals. Remember Bowdoin beat Middlebury last weekend. Also, they the committe need to shaft somebody and Elmira got chosen. Elmira is several miles short of the 500 mile rule so they are on the bus all day Friday.

Come to think of it, we haven't had much luck against the Birds...our last win might have been that tilt played at Amherst when we won 3-2. Quite a few years back now (the first meeting tween the 2 clubs??). In any event, I was still in Maine at that point, working in Brunswick, and made the drive to see that one. Subsequently, saw the ladies get their clocks cleaned several times at Stafford. OK, perhaps we do fear the Bird

Elmira got shafted so bad...they should just not play. Maybe they should forfeit and let another western team in to reduce all that traveling that St Norbert has to do...you know get on a plane and fly. It is clearly in the NCAA guidelines that interconference match-ups be avoided in the first round.

I think for once, we can say no one in the women's field got "screwed". If you accept that Bowdoin passed Norwich for the #2 seed in the east (the numbers appear to be close enough either way), then the bracket was set up exactly as would be expected "by the numbers". Elmira or Middlebury were the last team in for the east. The NCAA is supposed to try and avoid first round conference matchups. Switching Middlebury and Elmira did not upset the integrety of the field. This field basically set itself up. Manhattanville and Amherst have a message for Elmira: throw in the movie "Miracle" and enjoy the ride. It's not like they are traveling in a yellow school bus... and at least they are still playing...
