D3 Rosters

Re: D3 Rosters

Must have taken the 2014-2015 Manhattanville Roster down to make some corrections because last years roster is the latest available now.

Wife and I went to the East-West Challenge last year and was impressed with the tournament, Norwich University as well as the beautiful state of Vermont. We are heading back again this year.

Re: D3 Rosters

How many D3's recruit for need compared to recruiting and then having tryouts?

I suspect the teams that are at the top year in and year out, recruit for need. If they recruited everyone they could and then had tryouts to cut recruited players, that karma and reputation would follow them from year-to-year and recruits wouldn't buy in. I'm sure others are going to share stories that will surprise me, but that's my instinct.

Most D3's (not just the top) recruit for need, especially in the NESCAC where admissions slots are few for hockey coaches to play with. Norwich has been an exception. For whatever reason, Coach Bolding over-recruits and then cuts players (sometimes not freshmen). Last year's team had 25 players and goalies after cuts. They lost 1 somewhere during the season and 9 to graduation. They list 15 in their recruiting announcement (which is right on their website). That gives them 30 - they ain't carrying 30, you can be pretty sure of that.... Norwich has generally gotten away with this approach and still attracted quality players, but I believe (at least in New England) that players and their parents are starting to get wiser and realize that if they aren't a top recruit for Norwich they are wasting their time.

Some of you seem to be missing the point here... that, as hard as it is to believe, some of these NU players are actually attending Norwich for the education/experience and are hoping to make the team as well! So if a decent hockey player wants to join the Corps Of Cadets and play hockey, it must be difficult as a coach to say no, but not a bad situation to be in either.

Prez, is there a NU thread for this year started and if not, can you get one going as I'm sure we can make it interesting...:)

From what I hear from recruits, NU is encouraging lots of "maybe" D3 players to apply and enroll and then are culling the crowd for the couple that turn out to be OK. Even their recruiting announcement seems to support that - 5 or 6 featured players and then a lengthier list of a bunch of others that may play. This isn't a case in most cases where the girls fall in love with NU and go there and just happen to play hockey (that happens more in NESCAC where coaches can always use a couple of extra players because of the limited number of recruiting spots they get). This is more often a case where a player isn't having much luck finding a home and NU says "sure, come here".

Re: D3 Rosters

It is interesting to note Taylor Fairchild does not appear on the '14-'15 Cadet roster. Ms. Fairchild was 15-3 with a .924 saves % and was in net more than half the minutes last season. Has she left Norwich?

I seem to recall hearing thru the grapevines that she left for personal/family issues, but yes, she is not playing for NU, or for anyone else as far as I know either. Maybe someone else knows more?

In the meantime, we can all bow down in awe at how they can get so many players from overseas and be "impressed" at how their roster is from all corners of North America.

The strategy is to get as many of the best players possible to go there which means other schools won't have those players on their rosters. He's not the only D3 coach recruiting that way. Teams with such high turnover in any 4 year cycle should be a red flag to parents of potential recruits. Gustavus coach does the same thing turning over most of his roster every 2 years. Both teams are "successful" but is that the most ethical method for D3 hockey?!
