D3 Recruits 11-12

Re: D3 Recruits 11-12

Why..I'm one of the Children of the Lesser God...and proud of it.

Did you email the source yet? :o for ya...

the source? the players were the source. i think you mean the author, and no i didn't. nor did i email the editor, the parents, the school, the family dog, or your mother.

Re: D3 Recruits 11-12

maybe the fact that the article is about them? i doubt the paper randomly decided to write an article about two unknown girls going to a small d3 school in the USA without speaking to the players...especially since they are quoted in the article. don't think the content of the article was just conjured out of thin air. author wants to write an article, or is contacted and asked to write an article, speaks to source(s) to gather information for said article, and then reports said information in written form. that's how it works. glad i could help you understand.

Never mind..I'll email him for clarification.

I'm with Prez, I see this all the time. Hell I've even seen it in Ivy releases. Maybe if you didn't live in your own little world you might have seen it before as well.

This is a good story. Two kids who made their way up throught the ranks, had the where-with-all to Thank their coach. They are pumped for the experience and some arse like you comes along and trys to make a federal case out of it. For what?

Last I looked this thread had 200 hits in less than an hour. Stop em-barr-assing yourself. Pack it in...

BTW, Mom died in 86' ...asshat!

Re: D3 Recruits 11-12

Further to this ...I heard back from Shawn Cayley of the Durham Region this morning.

And I quote "To be honest, I was not fully aware that D3 schools term it as Financial Aid. I've done hundreds of these stories over the last 6 or 7 years and I've always termed it scholarship."

Winki..methinks you owe these two girls an apology.

I'm glad you want to keep this going, after you were so quick to try and get rid of it yesterday, but no, I don't think I do. While it's nice to know we have reporters out there that are writing about things they don't fully understand, the fact is if a subject of an interview says "I'm going to school X because I received an academic scholarship and want to play hockey there" then it wouldn't have magically been termed a "hockey scholarship" in the article. If it's called a hockey scholarship or left intentionally vague in the hopes that people would assume it was a hockey scholarship, then this is what happens. If you don't think there are players, and even worse, parents that do and say these things to puff themselves up, then you are crazy.

Of course, I never actually accused these girls of this, mind you, though you seem to think I've personally attacked them. In my first post you will notice I made an either or statement. I feel just as strongly that there are schools out there that offer inappropriate "scholarships" to players and I know that there are coaches out there who take financial aid packages or other aid available at their school and gussy it up together and call it a "hockey package" or "hockey scholarship" because there are so many Canadians who do not understand the NCAA rules and don't know that they can't receive hockey scholarships at D3 and they are more likely to feel special or important if they think they are getting scholarships based on their hockey talent as opposed to an academic scholarship that any good student could have.

Sorry sweetie.

You have a nice day...up on your pedestal.

As much as I'd prefer never to side with 5fer, it would be completely normal for the reporter to get it wrong.

I've NEVER done an interview that was accurately reported - and most interviews result in some cringe worthy statement that wasn't made but instead was a complete fiction or misinterpretation generated by the reporter.

I'd drop it.

It makes them look better if they're interviewing "someone important". Town looks better too. :)

Re: D3 Recruits 11-12

Geez...

I only quoted a portion of what he said... thinking that would get the point across. Silly me.

So...in defense of Mr Cayley he went on to say and I quote.. "Got to love how a story can get all bent out of shape in a word or two. Especially since the bottom line is getting these stories to the forefront." "I cover too many sports to pretend like I know everything about everything but I'm certainly glad you took the time to bring this to my attention."

Clearly this guy got it wrong and has been getting it wrong for years. Nothing was intentionaly misrepresented by the reporter or left vague, there were no parents puffing themselves up, there were no dumb Canadians that didn't know the rules, no kids that need to feel special or important. None of that crap...just an overworked sports beat reporter that is spread thin who thought all forms of subsidies from US Colleges were referred to as Hockey Scholarships. That's all folks.

Re: D3 Recruits 11-12

It's a gaffe that warrants a clarification or retraction from the publication IMO. I'd be skeptical the sports editor cares enough about the topic to bother with that. Also my opinion, any sports journalist with any experience covering college athletics should know the scoop about the D-III scholarship "thingy." It's really not that complicated or difficult to research if you don't happen to already know...is it?

There's a long time sports writer at one of the two major newspapers in the Twin Cities. Actually think he has worked for both papers. Once in a blue moon...or every few blue moons actually, he'll write a brief article on the topic of Gopher Women's Hockey after attending one single game out of a 3-4 season time frame...if even that often. You can pretty much count on several inaccuracies in the article based on a lack of knowledge...and an obvious lack of interest by the writer. That attitude by the writer and publication always steams me a little...first because they don't give the sport the attention dedicated fans think they should...which is annoying enough on it's own. Then, when they actually send a reporter to a game with the intent to publish an article, it becomes clear no research was done and the reporter has zero interest in the sport. Why bother if you're not going to put a little effort into it? I find it aggravating. Sorry...back to D-III recruits.

I'm wondering what percentage of the people reading this local newspaper actually know anything about the rules of NCAA hockey. It really doesn't matter does it? Retraction? Come on, imagine how these kid's would feel if they did. Oh ya, I forgot who we're dealing with here.

No it doesn't matter. News publications are supposed to print accurate information. Supposed to go to great lengths to verify statements are accurate...precisely because they're providing information their readers may not be informed on. That's their purpose. Doesn't make a bit of difference what their readers know or don't know. Ya see...people read newspapers to learn things. Their staff are also supposed to be informed or do the research and become knowledgeable if they aren't prior to publishing anything. The fact this reality escapes you makes me extremely aware of who "we're" dealing with here. Whoever "we" is anyway. Who else are you speaking for?

Why would a correction and accurate information have any adverse affect on the players featured in the article?

There are many types of newspapers in our world today Brooky, many that print pretty well anything they feel like printing. They really don't give a crap what people like you think. As long as they rile you up (simple people that is) they've done their job. I like this newspaper. :) And a retraction would be kind of like, me bringing up that fact again that you weasel tickets from players on your favorite team, sparing you from any cost. See, you did it again. That's who we're dealing with. :)

Yep...you got your National Enquirer, Star and the like. Real news publications about as professional as this rag apparently. Shocking that you would appreciate it's inaccurate content by a lazy journalist. It's quite alright if they're not concerned with my opinion since I have no interest in reading articles by uninformed journalists. They're not unlike me in that regard since I've never given a crap about what you think and have tiny regard for your mental capacities. :)

If their lazy journalism is designed to "rile me up" they've failed. My posting of a general opinion on lazy journalism would only be seen as "riled up" by someone exhibiting signs of early onset dementia. :)

Exactly. I'd be rich if you gave me a dollar for every misquote in local small town newspapers. Read interviews in the past on players from teams I've been involved with, and the mis information presented can at times be misleading to say the least.

I'm with fiver and his sentiments, that it is a good thing that these players are recognized for their accomplishments and that their years of dedication paid off in an opportunity to play the game at the next level, while getting an education to boot. We should be lauding the accomplishments of the players and thank the papers for writing the story and the recognition. The general public could care less whether it is called a scholly, FA package or combo of some kind.

What I find ironic, and sad...is all the sanctimonious rhetoric about accurate reporting by a scribe in a Canadian newspaper. Demanding a retraction?

Yup all this coming from the land of some of the most trusted, accurate and concise reporting known to mankind...

"Dewey Defeats Truman!"
