Norwich girls got word this evening from team captain that RIT is it. The NCAA d3 women's hockey site also shows the final four will be played in Rochester, Friday and Saturday.

Posted this over on the NESCAC thread last night. Just want to say I will miss all the insight and commentary shared by the Amherst and Middlebury loyal supporters over the season...and thank your girls for playing DIII hockey!!!
NESCAC disaster in Vermont!
Norwich came out strong and dominated Amherst winning 5-0. The Cadets opened the scoring when Lynn chased down a loose puck in the right circle and her shot was deftly deflected by Invernizzi into the top left corner of the net beating Murphy stickside. DeBus got her first goal late in the 1st, with assists by Gove and Parsons. DeBus added a second early in the 2nd when she pounced on a Lord Jeff clearing pass at the side of the crease and easily beat Murphy from in close. The Cadets extended the lead to four when DeBus fed from center to Gove breaking 2x1 down left wing and into the left circle, faking a shot, drawing the D and making a perfect feed to Lortie for the finish under Murphy. Fortier added a powerplay goal midway in the 3rd taking a pass from Rundlett and wristing one under Murphy from the left circle. Norwich now moves onto face Gustavus Adolphus.
The nightcap over in Middlebury was much more closely contested. Following 10 minutes of back and forth action Plattsburgh took an offensive zone penalty; Midd was applying pressure and it resulted in a second penalty. On the 5x3 the Panthers set up with Ugalde passing to Melberg on the right dot and she threw the puck back to Ugalde at the left dot for a one timer beating Aveson up stickside. Midd then cashed in a second powerplay goal; Styrbicki passed from center of the blueline to Krakower at the top of the right circle; Krakower's drive handcuffed Aveson with the rebound to Bielawski in the slot for a put back and a 2-0 Midd lead. The Cardinals got one back when Caldwell fought in the right corner and fed the puck up the half boards to Parke; she shot from just inside the blueline, into and through a scrum screening Jones and in up on the short gloveside. The 2nd saw lots of old time firewagon hockey and both goalies playing well. Aveson made a big stop on Sullivan from in close about 6 minutes into the period. Kistner then had a great look on a Cardinal powerplay only to see her shot wide shortside. Aveson again came up big with the glove on Bielawski on a shot from the right circle off a D turnover at 14:32. Midd appeared to be carrying play in the 3rd until a crucial call on Greer resulted in her being sent off for a major for hitting from behind. I saw both Greer and a Plattsburgh player go down and into the boards, but hardly felt the major call warranted, although the ref made the call without consultation. The Cardinals did not let opportunity pass them by and promptly scored twice on exactly the same set. Shaubel passed from the left point down low to Kistner; with Stewart at the top of the crease tying up the D and attention of Jones, Kistner fed across the crease to Gove on the far post for the shot into open net, twice. Jones did get a glove on the second goal but it made it into the net. Midd did get Jones off for the extra attacker only to see Klassen nail a long empty netter from midway up the side boards of the Cardinal zone to make it a 4-2 final. Rather a dramatic end to the NESCAC post season hopes. This will mark the first time there has been no conference representative in the finals. Congratulations to the Cardinals on their excellent comeback.

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. *— The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team finally had a break go its way.
The Cardinals scored two goals on a 5-minute major penalty in the third period Saturday to erase a 2-1 deficit and record a 4-2 victory over Middlebury College in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals at Kenyon Arena.
The Cardinals will move on to meet host RIT next weekend in the semifinal round.
'Some calls finally went our way — we've had hardly any breaks all season," Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said. "The girls have worked hard all season long and they deserve this.
"All the girls on the team, except for Helen (Giroux) haven't been to the Final Four. We didn't get into the tournament last year. So this is exciting for all of us."
Teal Gove scored both power-play goals for the Cardinals (19-6-3), who trailed 2-1 after one and after two periods.
"There was no negative feelings on the bench when we were behind, 2-1," Gove said. "We knew we still had tons of time to come back.
"Middlebury is a great team and we've all worked so hard. It's a great feeling to win — it's unbelievable."
The Cardinals failed to tie the game on a 2-minute power play earlier in the third but weren't to be denied on the 5-minute major for hitting from behind.
Gove, stationed on the far post, tied the game at 11:54 and then gave the Cardinals the lead for good at 13:43 on almost the same type of goal.
"I got a great pass from Jenny (Kistner) on the first goal," she said. "On the second goal, I know that the puck dribbled into the net after going off the goalie."
The final 1:09 of the Plattsburgh player advantage was nullified by a Cardinal penalty. Plattsburgh, however, was able to kill it off and finished off the victory with Kylie Klassen's empty-net goal with 41 seconds remaining. Klassen found the net from inside the Cardinals' zone.
"Special teams played a big role in the game," Houle said. "Most of the goals were scored on the power play.
The Cardinals also received an outstanding game in goal from Sydney Aveson, who made 22 saves.
"Aveson played an awesome game," Houle said. "Middlebury played hard and had chances to take a 2-goal cushion when they were ahead, 2-1. But Aveson came up big for us."
The Cardinals ran into penalty problems of their own midway through the first period.
The Panthers took the lead at the 12-minute mark when Sara Ugalde scored from inside the faceoff circle with a wrist shot to the upper half of the net with Middlebury skating on a 5-on-3 power play.
Then 42 seconds later, Hannah Bielawski put in a rebound on a 5-on-4 power play to give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage.
The Cardinals cut their deficit in half at the 13:56 mark when Alyssa Parke's shot from the point deflected into the net. Jordan Caldwell assisted.
"Middlebury took a 2-0 lead on two nice goals and two nice shots," Houle said. "It was big for us to get the goal that made it 2-1."
The second period was scoreless thanks to some strong play in net from Plattsburgh's Aveson, who withstood some Middlebury pressure the first half of the stanza.
"Middlebury smelled blood at that time," Houle said. "We were able to withstand their pressure with the help of Aveson."
The Cardinals later went on their first power play of the game. And although Plattsburgh didn't score, it at least changed the momentum until the Panthers went on their fourth power play of the game with eight seconds left in the second.
The Cardinals finished with a 26-24 advantage in shots on goal. Annabelle Jones finished with 22 saves for Middlebury (21-4-3), which had beaten and tied Plattsburgh during the regular season.

I will miss having a NESCAC team at FF. Tough to feel bad about Amherst not making it as Norwich thoroughly earned that spot. As for Midd, well I suppose we can finally put to bed those allegations about Mandigo getting all the calls in his rink? Actually, it seems as if the two Midd/Platty games that had a winner this year were both influenced by the referees, and in both cases the home team got the short end of it. Lucky for Platty their loss came early. Now that we have a NESCAC-free FF, perhaps its time for a Western champ as well? Go you Gusties!

Granted I've only seen a handful of games at Kenyon Arena involving the Middlebury women but coach Mandigo certainly didn't get the call to go his way last year in the Norwich/Middlebury regular season game when Midd had a goal waved off and then Norwich came back and scored moments later to pick up the crucial win. If Norwich doesn't win that game last year, the Cadets are probably left out of the tournament for Plattsburgh.

The major penalty call in the 3rd, definitely determined the outcome of the Midd/Platty game. Both teams were playing great. Neither had much luck 5 x 5, so it was going to come down to a special teams situation. Giving a team a 5 minute major at that point in a closely played, one goal game, pretty much decides the outcome. Both players were going hard into the boards for a puck. Probably a penalty worthy play but no way it called for a 5:00 major and ejection of the player. It would have been nice to settle this with all the players on the ice. Yes, the rules are the same from the drop of the puck to the final buzzer, but late in an important game, unless the foul was obviously blatant, it's hard to understand dramatically altering the balance of the game with this type of call. Congrats to the Panthers on a great season. Congrats to the PSU Cards on a hard fought game and best of luck through the rest of the tournament.

Agreed, to bad the officiating determined the outcome of a NCAA playoff game. It was very strange end between having a incredibly questionable major call, not sure if anyone would think it was a major, and then they buried their whistles on several calls after that?

I totally agree with you, however, Middlebury's two goals were scored on a 5 on 3 situation, on what some would say were questionable calls as well, at a point in the game when it could have totally deflated the Cardinals, and demoralized their goalie. Plattsburgh scored the only 5x5 goal in the game, so I guess the outcome would have been the same, if it were determined solely on 5x5 play.
It was a great game between two very evenly matched teams, and it absolutely could have gone either way, and both teams took advantage of opportunities that they had to in order to win in these types of situations. So, it was the even strength goal scored by Plattsburgh that ultimately won the game for them. Good game, two good teams....

I agree that the no-goal call clearly contributed to Norwich getting into the tournament and Platty staying home. The difference with that call is that the ref had to either allow or disallow the goal, and to be honest it is hard to argue that it was the wrong call. In this case, they could have called a penalty or not called a penalty, flip a coin, but to assess a 5-minute major was a use of discretion that clearly impacted the game.
