D3 2017 Offseason Thread: Coaching, Conferences, Etc.

Re: D3 2017 Offseason Thread: Coaching, Conferences, Etc.

It's a lot more complicated than that simple assumption.

Let's put it this way. Canton already tried to join the SUNYAC as an all sports member. They were rejected. Despite Morrisville's affiliate status in men's ice hockey and field hockey, the SUNYAC doesn't want affiliate members.

Like I said. It's complicated...

Which then explains why they called it the NEWHL....they're going to need more teams to keep the AQ and it seems like it won't necessarily be Canton or Morrisville.....

I'm aware Canton was rejected as a full SUNYAC member and it's one of the reasons I'm skeptical about Canton and Morrisville being a part of the new conference. Though it would be funny if setting up the NEWHL is just the SUNY women's teams working out a way to have Canton and Morrisville join the conference without those within the SUNYAC who are averse to associate members blocking it.

That's a good point. I'm definitely skeptical as well, but I haven't heard any rumbling of any better plans.

That certainly would be an interesting irony, wouldn't it. :-)

I can tell you that they are actively looking for two more members, but I have no idea who they are pursuing.

Well they have to be looking or the AQ is gone in two years. It still perplexes me why Brockport/Geneseo/Fredonia haven't started women's hockey.

Ok, if Canton and Morrisville can't/won't join the NEWHL, why can't Norwich & Castleton??

No one is saying they can't. But I don't see Norwich and Castleton leaving the NEHC when they are members on both sides. NU and Castleton don't leave UMass Boston, Southern Maine and New England College out to dry.

In a release today it's announced that Camille Leonard of Plattsburgh was one of 58 winter-sport student-athletes across all divisions awarded a postgraduate scholarship.

Leonard will pursue an MSW from McGill University in Montreal starting in the fall of 2018, as she will be spending 2017-18 playing for Karlskrona HK in Karlskrona, Sweden of the Dam Division 1 league.

The 2 games against Amherst 12/9-12/10 are worth the trip to Pine Valley!
NESCAC may release their schedule by the end of October or so?

Re: D3 2017 Offseason Thread: Coaching, Conferences, Etc.

The Buffalo Beauts of the NWHL has signed Adrian's top line from last season. Kristin Lewicki, Kaylyn Schroka and Sarah Shureb have all been signed. Other D3 players on the Beauts roster include G Kelsey Neumann (Plattsburgh), F Kourtney Kunichika (RIT while they were transitioning up), and D Kayla Parsons (Norwich).

I am a big fan of D3 hockey, but with news like this you have to start to question the level of play in the NWHL. 6 former D3 players on a NWHL roster?? There are definitely players in D3 hockey who could have been lower half D1 players (and even the occasional outlier that could have been an upper half D1 player), but it is very questionable that all of these 6 were D1 level players and even more so now should be playing professional hockey (in name at least).

Neumann was at Clarkson for a seasonbefore coming to Plattsburgh. Kunichika was also a D1 player at a 50/50 split. Her freshman and sophomore years were RIT's last two seasons in D3 and she led the team in points both seasons. Her junior year was the team's first in D1 and she dropped to third in points and was fourth her senior season. I guess they both qualify as the "lower half D1 player" you described. Whether Parsons or the Adrian trio would have stuck on a D1 team is moot as we'll never find out.

What is the NWHL's plan for the 2018 Olympics? I can't find if there will be a hiatus or perhaps this signing is to have players not going to Pyeongchang if they're scheduling games during the time Olympic players will have to be away.

Or maybe with the salary cuts the teams had to introduce the current players had to move on as they've deferred making real money as long as they can and now it's turning to recent grads who are willing to sacrifice earning potential outside of hockey to chase the pro hockey dream for a while.

Even if this is about replacing players out for the Olympics or current players leaving due to the salary cut, a growing number of D3 players are going pro in Europe and some are finding roster spots in the NWHL now. If a player fits a team's system and performs well at a tryout and seems like they can help the team win, the team is going to sign them. Where they played before is irrelevant.

none of those players should be playing "pro" hockey. Honestly, you mention Neumann, yet she never played a lick at Clarkson and then never really played at D3 Platts. But now she's good enough to be a "pro"?? Gotta agree with HockeyEast on this one....not a good sign. I see this league folding in a year, maybe 2.

I'm curious what that free agent camp looked like. Who were the participants, how many players invited, what level were the players who didn't get signed. Those 3 Adrian players together look like the classic case of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. Not familiar w/ the other 3 girls. I was as surprised as some other posters but Ric Seiling signed them for a reason! We'll see what we will see.
