D1 Commitments 2012-2013

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

While some of my comments were intended TIC, there was some validity to it as well...

Overall, typically about 40% of all D1 recruits in a given year are Canadian, and 60% American, and 2-3% international.

Within the ECAC, there are several teams that are stocked with mostly Canadian Players,Clarkson and Cornell, but there are just as many ECAC teams that are stocked with mostly Americans, such as Harvard, Princeton, and RPI.

The Numbers:

Team.... - USA - CAN - Int
=====================
Brown........ - 10 - 12 - 2
Clarkson..... - 01 - 20 - 0
Colgate...... - 11 - 10 - 0
Cornell....... - 06 - 15 - 0
Dartmouth.. - 11 - 10 - 0
Harvard...... - 15 - 03 - 0
Princeton.... - 15 - 06 - 0
Quinnipiac... - 14 - 10 - 2
RPI............. - 17 - 07 - 0
SLU............. - 11 - 12 - 0
Union........... - 14 - 10 - 0
Yale............. - 10 - 12 - 0
=====================
Totals.......... - 135 - 127 - 4

The tale of the numbers is:
Two teams with vast majority Canadian Players...Clarkson (20/21) and Cornell (15/21)
Six teams with a 50/50 split, give or take a player or two
Two teams with marginally more American players...Quinnipiac (14/26) and Union (14/24)
Three teams with vast Majority American players....Harvard (15/18), Princeton (15/21) and RPI (17/24)

Overall more teams with majority Americans, and more American then Canadian players in the League.

First time poster here: Not sure if anyone checked out the financial aid for these Ivy League Schools. Apprarently, the grants/scholarships for any international student is based off of a lower tuition rate? Maybe it's all business on the schools end. Remember, they don't offer athletic scholarhips. Although you would expect the students have to qualify and get in to the university/college. In essence, an International student will use less grant money/scholarhips (based on income level of the family) than an American at the same converted income level. Costs more for an American to attend an Ivy League school! Check it out for yourself: http://npc.fas.harvard.edu/

Note sure if that applies at all schools. In our case (not Harvard), once our D gained admission, her FA aid is in American Dollars, based on our (her parents) Canadian Income/Assets CONVERTED to US funds.

Our income level is adjusted accordingly when converted to American funds, so it actually evens out.
If the Canadian dollar is high, we get less FA aid in US funds, so we pay more USD $, but it is cheaper for us to buy those USDs.
If the Canadian dollar is low, we get more FA aid in US funds, so we pay less USD $, but it is more expensive to buy those USDs.

Example using simple numbers (fictious example):
(Note this is an example, numbers can vary greatly from school to school, from year to year and from family to family, as there are more factors than straight income, such as other sibblings etc)

These simple round numbers are used to illustrate the exchange rate makes no difference to the real cost for a person in their own countries currency.

Canadian Family Income is $100,000.00

Canuck Dollar is at Par, Income USD=100,000.00 family pays 10% = 10,000 USD = 10,000 CND
Canuck Dollar is at .90, Income USD= 90,000.00 family pays 10% = 9,000 USD = 10,000 CND
Canuck Dollar is at 1.10, Income USD=110,000.00 family pays 10% = 11,000 USD = 10,000 CND

There might a few cents variance due to exchange flux and the sliding scale phenomina, but that would typically only be a few percentage points. You should also take into account that Canadians have to buy insurance as out of country students, and that does not always come cheap, specially for varsity athletes, as the school mandates a certain amount of coverage. Many Americans already have this insurance, so not an extra cost to them.

Most Canadians can go to a leading edge Canadian School (McGill, UofT etc), and even at full cost would pay much less than the cost of an private US school.

Adding to the recruit Listings:

to RMU: Meagan Eady, Defense, Nepean Jr Wildcats, Almonte, Ontario
to Minn Mankato: Haley Northcote, Defense, Nepean Jr Wildcats, Cumberland, Ontario.

Not quite sure what you are talking about, but RPI Starting lineup features 1 or 2 canadians depending upon which goalie they are playing. Total of 7 on the team so I am not quite as good at math as most RPI students but thet seems like somewhat less than a majority. Of the 6 recruits for next year that I am aware of only one is Canadian.

What I meant by "starting line-up" is the actual starting line-up that is announced....."Tonight's starting for your Princeton Tigers" for example....I stand by my earlier comment "mostly Canadian" but I didn't mean anything negative by it just a comment in response to Canada taking over NE schools one by one or something to that effect. And, I repeat I have NO issue, NONE with the numbers p, it was just an observation.

Agreed....but you have to admit, 135-127 is pretty dang close to taking over. Add in the Qpac, Clarkson, Cornellm Darty recruits for next year and it looks like Canadian Red may surpass Old Glory. Am not really sure how we got on this topic. Haha. I certainly meant no disrespect or negativity by any of it. Just in response to earlier comments.

Who cares what country they are from?? You try to get the best kids possible! Even if the player is from china

I don't think anyone says they do care. Just when Clarkson made their recruit announcement (all Canadians), someone joked that Canada was annexing Northeast schools one by one. I think since then Dartmouth announced their recruits, all Canadians and so on. Really just observations but no one, as of yet, has said they really care. It's just more statistics for people like Hux who count which state produces more D1 players. Just interesting fodder!

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

Dartmouth has indeed announced their Early Decision recruits for the 2016's, but will most likely have 1 or 2 more players coming in. There is one D graduating, and the players mentioned already are all Forwards. Any other recruits would be most likely announced later this Spring.

My recollection is that you started the topic, and can't seem to let go of it.

My roots are neither Canadian, nor American, and as another poster said, take the best players available irregardless of origin.

Can we get back to the real topic at hand here...how is it again that should Hux list walk-ons? :)

Just as everyone doesn't care where a player is from, I don't care if a player is a recruited player on scholarship or a walk on. I reference the list with one objective. To see who will be added to the roster of each team for the next season, or two. I'd like to be able to see all of them on the commitment list myself, including walk-ons.

BTW, I started the other "discussion" by inquiring if Clarkson was actually in the US. I knew when I asked where Clarkson is located. ;)

Therein lies the rub. Recruited walk-ons make the rosters, while walk-ons rarely do. Thus I only list recruited players.

I TOTALLY agree.

That was tongue in cheek but actually west started it when he/she posted "Canada is slowly annexing one Northeast school at a time."
