D1 Commitments 2012-2013

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

That is true on the player side. But the student athlete is verbally accepting a scholarship offer. I would think that there must be some form of "offer" that she is saying she plans to accept. I wouldn't think she'd sign an NLI w/o knowing the terms of what they are being offered. So my guess is that at some point prior to signing an NLI, she gets to see something in writing.

Yes, after the verbal agreement, and prior to the NLI, there is an offer made in writing. If the offer is for a full ride, it is assumed that it will be renewed in full each year provided the performance (athletic, academic, behavioral) is there. If it is for less than a full ride, there may be some discussion (not in writing) on what would need to happen for the offer to increase.

Every scholarship is reviewed at season's end and is renewed as is, upgraded, degraded or rescinded.

I agree, Brooky, there doesn't seem to be too much reneging on verbals by the school on the women's side. I know of boys that have had their hearts broken when verbals were pulled.

I can confirm that it's happened way more than usual with the Gopher's mens program this year. The big difference is that with the men most all of them are expected to play AAA juniors for a year before becoming freshmen, and some perform at that level better than others, which causes the coach to change his "priorities". This leads to the D1 coach choosing someone else to fill an open position, despite a prior verbal commitment, which inevitably causes broken hearts...

I hope that this trend does not begin to surface on the womens' side.

It's the rampant one / two seasons and done by the athletes that has really whittled away my interest in the Gopher men. The Don is taking a beating with the recent disappointing seasons...but the guy has to practically start from scratch every two years...or less. It was a lot more fun when you would have a group of athletes together for four seasons and you could watch a team gel.

Minnesota:

Hannah Brandt......F...........Hill Murray High School........White Bear Lake, Minnesota

http://presspubs.com/articles/2010/08/16/white_bear_press/sports/doc4c695cb51ccee493030860.txt

(The article says she will attend the U of M in 2011-12, but she will be just a junior in high school this coming season, so it would appear that she will be an incoming freshman in 2012-13?)
Unless she plans to emulate Aaron Ness and accelerate her HS graduation by a year, you should be correct.

Also noticed from the USA U18 Team roster that Miss Brandt's home town is listed as Vadnais Heights, MN (not White Bear Lake as the article would lead you to believe).

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

If I were offered a verbal, I'd "play dumb" and email the coach asking exactly what was offered so I'd at least have something in writing. I've seen a couple of instances where girls heard "full ride" in July but were offered way less when it came time to sign an NLI. My understanding (perhasp incorrect) was that a scholarship could not be taken away for lack of athletic skill, but rather for failing to meet acedemis standards, not following coaches orders, missing practise etc. Although I beleive that if a coach wants to get rid of a player, they can find ways to make the player want to leave.

Warroad's Lisa Marvin commits to UND
Brad Elliott Schlossman - 08/17/2010

Call it an early 16th birthday present for Lisa Marvin. The standout forward from Warroad, Minn., achieved a longtime dream last week by accepting an offer to play women’s college hockey at UND. Marvin, 15 years old at the time and 16 today, is the youngest player ever to commit to the Sioux women and may be the youngest to ever commit to any NCAA women’s hockey program. She is between her freshman and sophomore years of high school. “I grew up with North Dakota in my family,” Marvin said. “It was a dream to go there. They liked me, so I thought why would I look at other schools if I knew where I wanted to go?” The UND connections run deep for Marvin. Her grandfather, Cal, was one of the founders of UND hockey in the 1940s. Her father, David, played for UND from 1987-91. And her sister, Layla, has verbally committed to UND for the 2011-12 season. “I liked playing with my sister in high school and didn’t see a reason to change it for college,” Lisa said. Derrick Comstock, who has coached in the Warroad girls program for 11 years, says UND is getting a special player. Lisa tallied 23 goals, 51 assists and 74 points in 29 games as a freshman. She was the third-leading scorer on the state-champion Warriors team. “She has a real head for the game — stuff you can’t coach,” Comstock said. “She has a knack of knowing where to be both offensively and defensively. She’s one of the smarter players I’ve been around, especially at such a young age. “Her and Layla also have been nothing but respectful. If you tell them something, it’s “yes, coach.” The other kids see that. They are good leaders.” Lisa is the fourth current Warroad player to commit to a Division I program. Layla and goalie Shelby Amsley-Benzie, both of whom will be seniors, are headed to UND next fall. Forward Karley Sylvester, also a senior-to-be, will be going to Wisconsin.

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

Brooky, looks like this belongs in a (new) "D1 Commitments 2013-14" thread! ;)
:) I know...but I just wasn't going to start that thread at this time. Probably should before long to avoid confusion. Committing before your sophomore season in high school...that's early.

I'd say no. There won't be enough regular business in that thread to keep it on the front page, so it will just get lost and a duplicate thread would eventually be started. Plus having too many Commitment threads around just increases the possibility that people will post in the wrong one.

Agreed, it's not hard to get it wrong when they are committing so early these days.

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

Maybe we could just have a Warroad Warrior to North Dakota commitment thread?

Nope...I won't be starting that thread either.

Per my anonymous rep attached to this post...my "Extra" subscription has expired and I've been unable to renew so I can't respond privately.

I agree with your thought on commitments at such an early stage and think for a large percentage of student athletes, taking additional time to thoroughly explore every option available would be / is a better route to travel. I'd guess most parents of student athletes would feel that way as well.

I do think you're going to come across the occasional player that just knows what's right for them...when they know it, so to speak...even at a very young age. Can't say that's a bad idea for those individuals either. I'm sure it's a load off for them too...not all bad.

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

So what constitutes an "early" commitment?

Since there can't be any letters of intent at this early age, what is the actual school committing to? Or is it just the player/parent making a public statement that this is the school I am going to despite no financial aid commitments on part of the school?

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

The player or somebody associated with the player is saying that there is a verbal agreement in place for the student athlete to enroll in the school and participate in the hockey program. Until an NLI is signed and received by the school, the team is not allowed to discuss their recruits publicly. In most cases, an agreement also exists regarding financial aid, whether that means specifics or just basic parameters.
