D1 Coaching Changes

Vermont posted an assistant coach job last week. Alex Gettens no longer listed on UVM website. Rumor has it he’s headed to Colgate.

I don't see her being selected at Clarkson. Her profile as a player and coach doesn't fit their level in my opinion. Former D3 and Club hockey player, and D3 coach who hasn't really accomplished anything special anywhere she's coached just doesn't fit with where Clarkson is at as a program. She doesn't bring any D1 experience or anything else of note to the equation. It will be interesting to see where she ends up. If I'm wrong, I have no problem eating my words. Lol

UVM has named Lawrence University (NCAA DIII) Head Coach Kevin Dessart as their new Associate Head Coach. Prior to Lawrence, Dessart coached the University of Colorado club team. Dessart had an 11 year media relations career in the NHL (Islanders, Panthers and Devils).

I couldn't agree more. This is easily the worst/weakest D1 hiring decision I've seen in a very long time, possibly ever. He played college club hockey. He coached women's college club hockey. Then he coached at Lawrence, so no D1 background whatsoever and not even a decent D3 coaching background. I have to wonder what in the world the Vermont coach saw in him honestly. He also brought his daughter to tag along for the coaching ride at Lawrence and made her his full-time assistant and she was a college club player with zero coaching experience, but Lawrence was ok with that?! And now she'll probably inherit the head coaching job, again with zero experience as a head coach. I guess that explains why Lawrence is where they're at in the college hockey world. I have to shake my head at some of these hiring decisions in our game. Would similar decisions with inexperienced coaches happen on the men's side???! It proves to me that most athletic directors have no clue about women's hockey or they just don't care. Either way our game suffers from it.

Lawrence is located in Appleton, WI, where I grew up. I haven't lived there for forty years, but my sister still does, and I visit a couple times a year. Admittedly, I pay little attention to DIII hockey, but I'm aware of St Norbert's (in De Pere, 25 miles away) and UW-Stevens Point (maybe 50 miles?) winning men's championships recently. If I had ever thought about it, I'd have not even been sure Lawrence has a men's team, and would have doubted they'd even have a women's team at all. I had to look up where they would play their games; it's a new facility nowhere near campus (and technically not even in Appleton) which opened less than five years ago.
 
Princeton lands a very good hire that I did not expect in Boston Fleet coach Courtney Kessel. A former assistant, but this is the first PWHL-to-college lateral move we've seen.
 
BU has hired Megan Quinn as an assistant coach to oversee their defensive unit.

Quinn is a 2018 graduate of Syracuse and was an all-CHA Second Team selection as a sophomore and was twice named to the All-Tournament team in the CHA conference tourneys. Following her graduation she played with the CWHL and NWHL one season each, as well as assistant coaching stints at two DIII SUNYs: Cortland then Oswego. For the last three seasons she coached at her alma mater Syracuse.

True story, Mira is a great choice and will bring continuity moving forward with both the team and the staff. She came to St. Cloud with Brian and helped recruit many of his players early on. Its too bad Brian left before he could get entire team/program that was all his. Would have been interesting to see how his vision would have worked in the WCHA. Not that he didnt have some pretty good players to work with, but this would have been the last year of players recruited under the prior coach.

A little light on bigtime coaching experience with just 1 year in the PWHL and 2 at St. Cloud as assistants, but her connections to N. Europe in the recruiting game may help, though according to the St. Cloud website Siergiej is the recruiting coordinator. One has to think that Siergiej simply does not want to be a head coach (and that is ok if it's the case. Not every assistant coach is head coaching material). She was the associate head coach. Perhaps the new St. Cloud posters have some insight on Siergiej.

Looks like she owns a club program out of Minnesota, has Olympic playing experience and St Cloud coaching experience, and Gopher playing experience. Light on big time coaching but lots of exposure to successful coaches. Pretty interesting resume and fits the bill for this job imo.
