D1 Coaching Changes

Here’s an article from 2013 talking about the need and constant talk of a new OSU ice rink.

I think we need to recognize this for what it is: a long term ploy by Ohio State to lure Minnesota and Wisconsin into a false sense of security thanks to our dedicated state of the art facilities for our women's teams. And once they finally build a new arena (groundbreaking in 2044, completion mid 2050s), OSU will so thoroughly dominate that our two programs are in a constant struggle with the Fightin' John McCains[SUP]1[/SUP] and the Tommie the Tank Engines to stay out of last place in the WCHA! That is, if they don't spend the money on football first.

what if they're negotiating with Muzzy and she's using that to force OSU's hand on a new arena (after she's been saying it was coming any day now since 2019)?

What IF? The interesting end result could be that they sweeten the deal so much that instead of Muzzy using it for leverage to get the rink built by 2050 that she actually takes the job. The question would be does she actually believe the rink is going to get done, it's only been talked about for 11 years so far. She's a confident lady, she'll take UMD right to the top, then wait for the call from UM when Frosty melts. I 100% believe she'll be back to wearing those ugly colours before she hangs it up.

(fixed that for you)

But yeah I would be not at all shocked if she were to take over from Frosty. Could also be that Darwitz has aspirations in that direction. Both are Gopher legends with excellent records as coaches. With Duluth and the PWHL GM job open, it will be interesting to see what happens in both...

PWHL New York has hired Union College women's head coach Josh Sciba, as an assistant coach. So looks like there's a coaching vacancy at Union. Sciba has been an assistant coach for the USA senior women's team and has led coaching for their power play. Nice hire for NY!

Muzzy a GM? I could so see that.

Is Darwitz risking getting a little employment radioactive with her recent employment history?

No time like the present, Nadine! ;)

As for Darwitz, depends on who you ask. Even people in highfalutin' Dinkytown circles who aren't exactly fans of her think she got screwed by the PWHL. I'm in agreement with them. And if Frosty got hit by a bus tomorrow, I hope she'd be Mark Coyle's first call.

As announced on June 20, Pat Bingham is replacing Gretchen Silverman as head coach of Post. The bio says Bingham has assistant or head coaching experience with a variety of teams (all men's), including the former Elmira Jackals and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Laura Schuler's been announced as head coach at UMD. She is the previous assistant coach at UMD and previous head coach at Dartmouth, UMass Boston, and Northeastern with coaching experience with Hockey Canada. (The Rink Live story.)

I really don't understand (and have no special insight) as to why they took a month and a half to make this announcement when it was the easiest and probably most logical choice if Schuler was interested in staying in Duluth.

It smells like they were shopping around and Schuler was the least bad option. Certainly can't blame other coaches for not wanting to be at the perpetual 4th best resourced WCHA program.

Yeah but if you're the fourth place team in the WCHA you've got a chance to make it into the NCAAs.

Seeing as this is a State college I wonder what the hiring rules are as in you have to post the job for a certain amount of time blah blah blah.

I don't know much about either. Was either a viable candidate?

Jake Bobrowski is closely allied with Darwitz and worked for her at Hamline before he went to Elmira. He and Darwitz were going to be co-head coaches at a local private school (Hill-Murray) before she was offered the PWHL GM job. He was fired, err, not renewed by PWHL Minnesota (and I suspect this might free Darwitz into talking her mind if she so chooses).

As for McAteer, she has some D1 assistant coaching experience but primarily has been at Augsburg (D3). It's a good program even with limited resources and she's a good coach by all accounts. I've walked over to Augsburg a few times on a whim to watch them play.

Either would have been probably fine but compared to Schuler, well, it's not much comparison in experience at the D1 level/playing/connections/etc.

Tony Maci takes over at Union. For a program that gets zero attention on this board I thought the above was an interesting article. Their past two years were their winningest in program history, and they are getting a new rink in 2025.

Prior to taking the Union job, Maci became Associate Head coach at Clarkson a couple months ago. Certainly it was earned but at the time I wondered if it was also a means to discourage losing Maci to Colgate. In the end PW hires contributed to Clarkson losing Maci anyway.

Assistant or associate head coach openings at:

BC
Penn State
Ohio State
Delaware, presumably

Seemingly some great opportunities.

Lake Forest College Head Women's Hockey Coach Jennifer Wilsonannounced Thursday that she will be resigning to accept an opportunity as an NCAA Division I assistant.
