D-III All-USCHO Team

Re: D-III All-USCHO Team

I don't understand this. She is a goalie that averages less than 20 saves a game (~15). Other goalies in the league put up identical numbers as far as SV% & GAA and she get's rewarded for what? Her Win%? That's in the hands of her team and often not a reflection of the goaltender.
Danielle Justice in my opinion (and I am always right) is the best Goalie in the MIAC and the western NCAA. Gustavus would not be at where they are this season and the last two with out her outstanding play. For the MIAC coaches to not include her on the first team is a disgrace. I am not suggesting that either of the women selected are not deserving of the honor but I feel Justice should have been included. In this case it is a reflection of the goaltender. She may not see a lot of shots because of her defense and the style/system Gustavus plays but I have not seem many other goalies that could or would make some of the saves she has. There is not another goalie in DIII that I would replace her with.

Re: D-III All-USCHO Team

The reason Laura Chamberlain was not eligible was because she did not make the ECAC West 1st or 2nd team. Seems crazy, but she did not, made only the All-Rookie Team. I have a feeling if she was even 2nd team ECAC West, Derek would have made her the 1st team East goalie, strictly on her performance against Norwich in October. Chamberlain had one bad game (Oswego) which hurt her. Mackrell is tremendous, no doubt. She stopped 103-of-107 shots in three games at the Ritter, with several unreal saves. If Stack doesn't get hurt mid-season, she is a shoo-in for first team, but can't knock the second team selection.

I didn't realize there were eligibility rules. To me, that makes no sense. The conference awards should take into account only conference games; the national awards should take into account all games. If that causes one player to rise above others due to different criteria, then that should be allowed.

Barring that, I wonder if Chamberlain lost some ECAC West all-conference votes because she was a shoo-in for the Rookie squad.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a sense of humor. She's very good, but to say she's the best in the west is, like you said, an opintin. The number of shots a goalie sees is all part of the save%. She simply didn't get in because of that. You don't hear me complaining about Campbell or Deardorff not making it. That's just the way the cookie crumbles

The St. Olaf and Bethel goalies are individually better than Justice. Danielle is an above average goalie, who is solid, but Platchick and Newstrom are all-around better at their positions. IMHO.

Funny but I don't see anybody knocking the east goalies and their stats are about the same as Justice's.

I am not familiar with the Eastern goalies but I assume most of them average more than ~15 shots a game.

The bottom line is Justice may be very good but you need to prove that in order to be selected. I just don't think stopping ~15 shots, 90% of which come from the blue line, proves she is the top in the league. I think most goalies could post the stats she has if they played at GAC.

In fact:

2007 - 2008 - Goaltenders combined for .93SV%, .67GAA in Conference Play
2006 - 2007 - .926SV%, 1.00GAA
2005 - 2006 - .924, 1.05

Justice this year - .934 (which is actually only good enough for 6th best in the conference. The MIAC was actually stacked goalie-wise this year), 1.03

Re: D-III All-USCHO Team

So, Justice must have some weaknesses to not be selected, Its not just numbers, right.
What might they be?

She gets hurt because she plays on the best team in the league that plays a very puck possession style and she doesn't often face a lot of shots.

Her numbers are still outstanding regardless. I'm looking forward to seeing her play for the first time live this weekend though to be able to judge myself on where she ranks up with Mackrell, Chamberlain, Williams, Bloom etc.

You must be drinking green beer early. Justice has been the best goalie in the league the last three years. Keep in mind the MIAC coaches select the all conf teams, and I would love to be a fly on the wall during the meetings and listen to the coaches try and "sell" the other coaches on how great their players are. Is some it truths, sure. Is some of it to "save my job" and get parents off my back, no question about it...

well i think today's performance can put this discussion to rest....once the defense in front of her falls apart...see what happens

You have been out in the sun too long. 2 PP goals and one deflection. Blame in on the goalie? When and IF your team gets to these games, (IF) notice in caps, that it takes more than a tender to get you to the final game. Based on what you say, the Oles and and Bethel should be here, give me a break...

my team has been there before. Yes there were two power play goals and a deflection......and two very very weak goals. I never blamed it on the goalie, but said once the defense in front of her broke down, which was often the first two periods...she struggled, which has been my view over the past couple of seasons. She is definitely a far cry better than the tenders that Gustavus had before her, but still the Gustie goalies aren't used to being pressured...and anytime they are...they don't fare to well.

If she is the "best goalie in the west" then you would think she would find a way to save some of those. Part of being the best is standing on your head in unfavorable situations. I have never said Justice has trouble making the saves she should make. It is the tough saves that she rarely makes. This often doesn't show because her team is good enough to limit the number of tough saves she has to make. But what yesterdays game proved, and like goJ said, as soon as there is pressure on her, we see that she really is no better than the average MIAC goalie, if not worse.
